Phi Theta Kappa is one of the few organizations on campus to boast a membership of all age groups and many different walks of life. In keeping with the idea that Mesa's chapter is functioning for the purpose of getting its members involved, Mesa Community College is the site for the 1976 annual State Convention. Although PTK is not a service club as such, it does have money available for two scholarships each year. These are awarded to the outstanding male and female member of the Phi Theta Kappa, who has performed loyalty and service to the fraternity throughout the academic year. To finance these awards, PTK sponsors car washes and the yearly book lair. Phi Theta Kappa is a lifetime endeavor. Every member is entitled to benefits after graduation from M. C. C. Missing a perfect season in JC play with only 1 loss during the entire campaign, the T-Birds ended up at 28 to 1. The T-Birds took it all by defeating Grossmont, California, 15 to 4, 10 to 12 ttime expiredj, and 15 to 12. Mickey Hatcher booted a 43-yard field goal with eight seconds left on the clock to snap the Grossmont winning skein at 17 games and catapult the T- Birds to the National Championship. Having to come back from the brink of defeat proved to be the key to the football season, as the T-Birds went through undefeated and untied to earn the 4141 ranking in the Nation. The University ofArizona J Vsquad opened the T-Birds'home campaign and played the role of a rude guest before falling to the T-Birds 9 to 7 in the final quarter on another Mickey Hatcher field goal. Snow College at Ephraim, Utah, proved no mystery to the T- Birds, as they demolished their hosts 38 to 10. The locals cranked up their offense and were in complete control all the way. The T-Birds hosted Arizona Western and the Matadors could not cope with the Mesa Powerhouse, going down to a smashing 41 to 16 loss. Defense was the name of the game, the T-Birds never let the Matadors in the game. ln the most physical contest of the season, Scottsdale CC led the T-Birds with less than a minute to play before going down to a bitter defeat, 14 to 10. Oscar Ramirez hit Mickey Hatcher with a 6-yard scoring toss with the clock sho wing 54 seconds left. This win was extra sweet, as it reversed the T-Birds' only loss in the 1974 log. The Glendale Gauchos moved in next. The T-Birds showed an awesome attack in annihilating their conference foes 62 to 6. The final score could have been worse, but coach Paul Widmer cleared his bench trying to keep the game respectable. ln the battle for the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference crown against Phoenix College, the T-Birds came out on top 31 to 17. This was another tough game for the T-Birds, with the Bears playing their best outing of the year. With the blue ribbon at stake the T-Birds were not to be denied. The final game of the season had the T-Birds in a return go with Eastern Arizona in a nothing game. The eventual outcome was never in doubt as Mesa again whipped the Gila Monsters 33 to 20. The outclassed Monsters played tough to the end, but the T-Birds were not about to let them spoil their perfect season. Although capturing the National Title, the T-Birds failed to get a bid to the Wool Bowl in Roswell, New Mexico. The host New Mexico Military Institute chose Coffeyville JC from Kansas. This was a bitter blow to the T-Birds, as they certainly deserved the selection. The season was extremely gratifying to the team, coaching staff, administration, and fans who filled the stadium at every game to watch topnotch football.
