'their hopes grew into ideas that were givenmore explicit ex- position. in S1962 the state legislature put into statutes a law creating junior college districts. ff M . il dr. robert j. hannelly, dean of phoenix college, was appointed as the first president thesnewly formed maricofia county junior college unit. president hannelly chose dr. riggs, dean of students at phoenix college, to be tliefdeaneiof the mesa extension. leasing buildings on south extension road, the mesa campus opened to some seven hundred enthusiastic students in the fall of 1963. although facilities were far from being adequate, the administration, faculty and students and in- tetestedi townspeople accepted' the chaIlenge before them and met lt well. nothing dimmed loyal spirits as they began to build a new edu- cational institution. in the spring of 1964, the entire college staff, 'student body and civic minded citizens enacted a winning campaign for a bond issue. land on south dobson road in mesa was purchased in the summer of that year for a new college campus. present plans are for thee extension to move to the campus in the fall of 1965. from humble thought, -' channeled into a kindred pattern emerged a workable blueprint developed for both youth and age W an institution for greater learning 3 in the valley of the sun.
