The Cimarron Class Fleet Oiler Lefl Norfolk May 3. 1994 for a 176 day cruise which took her throughout the Qed ea in support of the U.N. sancitons against Iraq. As the sole logistic vessel in the Ded (Sea. Merrimack provided all support services for the ships of Task Group 1 ' 32. 1 . including allied vessels participat- ing in the Joint Multi-National interdiction forces. In the spirit of a right-sized Navy. Merrimack was the first auxiliary ship tasked to board and search merchant vessels, exhibiting superior tlexibility in the final days of at-sea inspections which involved over 9000 boardings since the U.N. sanctions took effect in 1992. Merrimack also participated in both exercise Infi- nite Shadow ' 94 with Jordanian naval units, and Eagle Saulte ' 94. exercising with Egyptian naval forces. The crew made a memorable port visit to D|ibouti. Africa. They responded selflessly to the many impoverished people of Djibouti who live every day under threat of deadly disease, strained medical facilities, inadequate supplies, and the harsh environment. In superb cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the American Embassy. MEDDIMACK donated over 60 cases of Ultra flight Tempera- ture milk to the Balbala hospital, a local orphanage which also provides maternal medical services. Additionally, a nonstop flow of crewmembers stretched out their arms in donating 50 units of blood to the Djibouti blood bank, greatly boosting the local supply which had been plagued by limited and or contami- nated blood supplies. Merrimack provided the highest quaHty in midshipmen summer training. Three groups midshipmen from various colleges and universities received training in hoarding operations from the Coast Guard Law Enforcement Team, and were active participants in a CW shoot and various foreign nax ' ) ' exercises, includ- ing astern refueling and tactical maneuvering. Throughout the deployment. Merrimack, steamed over 30,000 miles to safely conduct 71 underway replenishments servicing 25 different U.6. and NATO ships. hc delivered over 10 million gallons of diesel and aviation fuels and 912 pallets of cargo, transferring over one million pounds of car o. Flight deck per- sonnel kept busy logging over 60 hours of flight operations in transferring pas- sengers, mail, and cargo to other fleet units. The 17 officers and 241 enlisted personnel onboard enjoyed portcalls in Qota and Palma, Mallorca, 6pain, Au- gusta Bay, 6icily. Hurghada. Egypt. Jeddah, 6audi Arabia. Djibouti. Africa, and Ros. Greece, While away from homeport Norfolk, b crew members achieved Enlisted Sur- face Warfare Specialist qualification and 5 qualified ofllcer of the deck under- way. For many onboard it was their first deployment, and one not likely to be forgotten. From donating blood and supplier to the needy in Djibouti, to bring- ing the George Washington and Thomas . Gates alongside in the gulf of Suez, even the old hands would describe this cruise as both exciting and enjoyable. Merrimack has once again proved she is indeed the World ' s Finest Fleet Oiler. Pennsylvania and was raised in Lindenwold, New Jersey. He is a 1976 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Immediately following commissioning. Commander Jackson was assigned to the .Athletic Staff. U.S. Naval .Academy where he served as an .Assistant Football Coach for one season. Commander Jackson then attended Surface Warfare Officer Basic School and reported to USS CONC ORD (AFS 5) for his initial three year sea assignment where he served first as Communications Officer and then as Damage Control .Assistant. Commander Jackson ' s follow-on shore duty assignment was to Manhattan. New York, where he served as Officer in Charge of Officer Recruiting Programs for Navy Recruiting District. New York. In September 1983, after graduating from Department Head School. Commander Jackson reported to USS CLAUDE V. RICKETTS (DDG 5) and served as Engineering Officer for two years. Follow-on orders in September 1985 assigned him to USS GU.AM. where he served as Engineering Officer until November 1987. Commander Jackson was then assigned to Commander. Naval Surface Force. U.S. ■Atlantic Fleet staff where he served as Conventional Propulsion Training Coordinator for east coast surface ships. In October 1989, Commander Jackson reported to USS KALAMAZOO (AOR 6) as the Executive Officer, This tour of duty included a major deployment to the Red Sea and .Arabian Gulf in direct support of Operation Desert Storm. Following his Executive Officer tour he reported to Commander. Combat Logistics Squadron FOUR in June 1991 where he served as Chief Staff Officer until reporting to the Naval War College as a student in the Senior Officer course. Commander Jackson became USS MERRIM.ACK ' S(AO 179) 7th Commanding Officer in December 1993. Commander Jackson ' s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards). Navy Commendation Medal (three awards). Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Southwest .Asia Campaign Medal. Commander Jackson resides in Virginia Beach. He attended the University of Rochester in New York, where in May 1980 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a specialization in Russian Studies. Lieutenant Commander Berke was assigned to his first com- mand, USS SAMPSON (DDG 10) from November 1980 to July 1984. He then served as Main Propulsion Assistant on board USS KING (DDG 41) from December 1984 to May 1986. He was a student at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California from July 1986 to December 1987 where he earned an MS degree in .Administrative Science. After attending Department Head School at Surface Warfare Officers School Command (SWOSCOLCOM) in Newport, Rhode Island from January to August 1988. he returned to sea duty for tours on board USS MERRIMACK (AO 179) from September 1988 to May 1990, and USS AMERICA (CV 66) from July 1990 to February 1992. Lieutenant Commander Berke ' s next assignment was with Mari- time Prcpositioning Ships Squadron THREE (COMPSRON THREE) forward deployed to the Western Pacific from March 1992 to March 1993, After attending the Prospective Executive Officer class at SWOSCOLCOM, in April and May 1993, he served on board USS MILWAUKEE (AOR 2) until ' it was de- commissioned on 27 January 1994. Lieutenant Commander Berke reported on board USS MERRIMACK (AO 179) on 13 February 1994 as Executive Officer. Lieutenant Commander Berke ' s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards). Navy Achievement Medal and various unit awards and campaign ribbons. Lieutenant Commander Berke is married to the former Patricia Goddard of West Hartford, Connecticut, and they have two daughters, Elizabeth and Kristin. Martinez was born on 14 October 1944 in Corning, New York. She enlisted in the Navy on 10 Au- gust 1973 in Syracuse, New York. After completing Recruit Training in Orlando, FL she attended Hospital Corpsman A School and Operating Room Technician School at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, Great Lakes. IL. HMCM (SW) Martinez ' first assignment was Naval Hospital Whidbey Island as an Operating Room Technician. Following her next tour of duty at Naval Hospital Great Lakes, she was assigned to Naval Regional Medical Center, Okinawa, Japan. She returned to the United States and completed a tour at the Naval Medical Clinic at NAS Whiting Field. She then served as an Enlisted De- tailer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington DC. During this tour she was sent TAD for three months to the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee at the Washington Navy Yard. After attend- ing the Senior Enlisted Academy, Master Chief Martinez was as- signed to USS YELLOWSTONE (AD 41) as the senior enlisted member of the Medical Department. Before completing this tour, she earned her Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) desig- nation and was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer. She then accepted a tour at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as the As- sistant Hospital Corps Plans Officer and Enlisted Technical Advi- sor to the Navy Surgeon General. Prior to terminating shore duty to go to sea, she attended the Command Master Chief course at Naval Base, Norfolk, VA. Upon graduation from this course, she received orders to USS MERRIMACK (AO 179) as Command Master Chief. Naval Forces Central Command ' s Maritime In- terdiction Force Operations in the Northern Ded (Sea and in support o( Commander. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to the three ammo cargo platforms. MEDDIMACK was outfitted with 14 CONEA boxes used for freeze, chill, and storage. UNDEP personnel used our four manual pallet jacks and eight fork trucks for the 74 underway replenisheraents conducted throughout the deployment. Liquid and cargo transferred by MEDDIMACK during MED 2-94: 7.269.000 gallons of DFM delivered 1 .843.000 gallons of JP5 delivered 4.000 gallons of fresh water delivered to a Turkish Naval Vessel MEDDIMACK. received and delivered a total o( 1 .bl 1 pallets, three aircraft engines and 52 pallets of ammunition. The buck pa ed through the officer . the chiefs, the first class petty officers, the second class petty officers, the third class petty officers, and through each department. Each picnic had a different theme and event: a spades tournament and chili from the 1st class: a scavenger hunt, lasa- gna and banana spliU from the chiefs where all went searching for the one bauble on board that only one person wears and not any of us will share (Command-at-sea pin) . 5ar-B-Que and tropical desserts introduced a raffle by the officers where they of- fered the First LT to work over the side and the DtllB boat for rides for the duration of the next steel beach picnic. The second classes offered a buffet oi homemade hamburgers, fried catfish, fried chicken with crew members competing in a Gon Talent Show . The winner received a liberty weekend. While steaming through the Med. the CO stopped the ship to announce Swim Call! The crew enjoyed two frolic-filled hours of leaping from the 02 level forward and the accommodation platform. The ship ' s boat and rescue swimmers ser ' ed as lifeguards as their shipmates dove and splashed in the refreshing Aegean waters. An amateur event. Battle Qoyale Boxing Tournament, allowed crew members to vent steam both in and out of the ring. Over 70 percent of the crew cheered on the dozen contestants in a ring fabricated by the ship fitters especially for the event. All gathered at high noon to be entertained by the announcer, the referee and the pugilists duking it out. In conjunction with one steel beach, fire hoses were faked out on the flight deck and a half-water-filled AFFF can was placed in the center of the flight deck tor Fire Hose (Soccer. Teams of nine manned the attack center hose and the back-up goalie hose. The Wardroom team took on the Operations Department team. De- pair Five ' s team battled the DA E Division team over which one could push the AFFF ball into the other ' s goal. In addition to creating a little cohesion and competition on board, the soccer game cooled all contestants and fans on a hot North Ded (Sea day. MEDDIMACK was proud to host the North Ded (Sea Basketball Classic. Teams from all ships in the area were invited to challenge Merrimack ' s finest. U(S BDl(SCOE. U66 (STEPHEN W GQOVE6. and } CONOLLY put forth a good effort to match our es- teemed teams. U(S6 LEYTE GULF and ] JOHN L HALL comprised the second flight of players when they relieved BDl(SCOE and W GDOVE(S. Fans and players con- gregated on MEDQlMACl ' s professional flight deck B-Ball court to watch ' the game and enjoy yet another Steele beach picnic. The other three ships stood off MEDDl- MACK in a tight formation so they could view the competition as well. The only com- plaint from the visitors was that our team had more available time and space on their home court. In the final Tournament, five commands participated with MEDDIMACK winning the pennant. When } CONOLLY heard about our extensive weight room, they wanted to best our toughest weight liflers in a 3-man. 3-event match: dead-litl. bench-press, and squat. Morale was high on Merrimack when our three contestants out-Htled theirs 1 160 pounds to 985 pounds. During our stay in sunny Arahurghada, Egypt, some crew members took advantage of the beautiful coral reefs. MWD subsidized the fees so that over five dozen sailors got their first lessons underwater by taking the PADI Open Water Diver Course in the best diving area in the wodd. The crystal clear waters in the North Qed Sea al- lowed a visibility of over 100 feet where many varieties offish and coral thrived. Lion fish, puffer fish, parrot fish, grouper, rays and sharks frolicked with Merrimack divers amongst the hundreds of types of coral in the Abu Damada Deef Since we were in the Holy lands, a tour to Mt. Sinai via Sharm el Sheik was offered to the crews of all the ships operating in the North Ded Sea. MEDDIMACK spon- sored some of the trips using her 40-ft, 115 from the Navy ships standing ofi ' Sharm el Sheik and continuing with a bus ride inland to the mountain where St. Katherines monastery has stood for over 1 b centuries. Many a single crew-member drank from the Well of Moses in hopes that the legend was true that once you drink from that well, you will marry. Some hiked up the mountain; others enjoyed a ride on a camel. Affer climbing the final 2000 feet to the top. the gulf o( Jordan was the only water sighted in the desolately beautiful panorama.
