Q l Jeb Dedication We the Senior Class dedicate this annual to Mrs. Julia Christmas Cooke, who has worked tirelessly to make our school one devoted to the highest standards of education. In spite of her full schedule however, Mrs. Cooke is never too busy to listen to a problem or offer thoughtful counceling. Her sincere inter- est in each individual, and her loy alty and devotion to Mercy School of Nursing has won for her the respect and admiration of the Student Body. I was thinking back to my high school days, And how nursing had entered my mind. And I thought of the caps and the treatment trays, And the letters R.N. I would sign. I thought of the uniforms white as can be, And the pin with the letters engraved. Yet, how could I know, or how could I see That nursing's a road that you paved. It isn't your name, it isn't your looks, Or your voice, or your hair or your eyes, It isn't your marks, or it isn't just books, Or the early hours you rise. It's the smile that a patient has when you're done, It's the 'Thank you' he gives for his life. It's the cry of the newborn as he becomes one Of this great new world and its strife. It's the mother whose family awaits her return Or the father who's too young to die. It's the 'big' and the 'little' things that you learn It's the many times you ask 'why?'. It isn't the cap but the head underneath That makes the nurse what she is. It's not the black band or the high honored seat. It's the heart that she gives with all this. - The Senior Class of 1963 Class motto: Revering the Past: Enjoying the Present Anticipating the Future. Class song: Stay I 1 5 fp ' , President . . . Capping Dance hy, rw- lf AQ Capping The Surgical Party The Turkords Dance 'dar' .-k'5 f f if V Peace -- Wow Christmas Banquet We Seniors Class History In September 1960, a new group of Preclinical Students entered Mercy's Swinging doors. We were 33 in number and greener than grass. After a week of initiation and orientation our number was cut to 31. It was aroughfive days but friends were made and things were done never to be forgotten. Our Probie year was 'a hard one, full of classes and new experiences. We livedfor the day when we would become real nurses. Our Capping would symbolize this. After many tears and months of study the great day arrived in May. The festivities started with a dance on a Friday night. Our Theme Some Enchanted Evening was most appropriate. Saturday morning, the parents came, the caps were placed on our heads, and the tears flowed. During August of that year we saw our first graduation. Our Seniors left but not without a fond farewell from us. The party we gave went with the theme The Things I Remember - From Our Student Days . The center piece for the table was Mrs. Cookes prized anatomical structure of the urinary system, dec- orated with sun glasses and a cigarette. Freshman summer was brought to a climax by a dance. This dance was to become city renowned and forever to be talked about at Mercy. Our guests num- bered about 400 people. It was one of the shortest dances ever but one of the greatest. Junior year came. We were no longer the instructors targets and welcomed the fewer classes. These were the days we had time to form close friendships and work together. Our project for the year was the planning of the Junior-Senior. It was held at the Luau Restaurant in May. Who'll ever forget the dessert? The Group became our title during these days. Our number had been de- creased to 17. For the firsttime we separated. Only four members of the Group could have gotten stranded in Tenn. on their way to Peace. Specialties started this year and we all struggled through them, even Pediatrics, with strong hearted determination. In September 1962, another group of Probies entered these hallowed halls. We had been planning for this event for two years and greeted them with grim faces and many chores to make them feel welcomed. These were glorious days. At last we were SENIORS! ! ! Sister Jerome pre- sented the marks of distinction - our blue bands early in September. Now the end is nearing. We've come along way together. We shared many laughs and heartaches. Some didn't make it all the way. There are just 16 of us left now. But to each girl who is or has ever been a member of The Group , there is a special bond of loyalty and friendship to be carried with her all the days of her life. To Mrs. Cooke, Acting Director of Nursing Education, we leave our annual as a symbol of our respect and gratefulness for all that she has done for us. I, Jane Agnew, leave my ability to raise this class, to any other devoted mother who has the nerve to try. II. I, Aggie Anderson, leave everything except my Diploma and Billy. III. We, Ann Sullivan and Annette Westermann, leave our sticky toilet to anyone with enough Ajax to clean it. XVIH. We, the Greatest Class of Seniors to graduate from Mercy ----- Leave! Leave! Leave! 39 Atropolis of Mars January 26, 1972 Dear Sirs: We, the 1963 graduates of Mercy Nursing School request permission to hold our class reunion on your planet August 6, 1972. We have chosen your sphere for two reasons. First, your reputation for wild parties and liberal laws and second, because no other planet will agree to let more than two of us stay at a time on their planet and then only for 15 minutes. The following is a brief resume of the members of our class and their activities to date: Aggie Shaw-newly appointed Med. Surg. instructor who is relieving Mrs. Julia Cooke- while she awaits her fifth child. Bonnie Bean-new head nurse on first St. Mary's has just devised a new way to prevent contractures in Geriatric pts. by teaching them the twist. Pat O'Donnell has made medical history by having the first baby born on water skis in the Catawba River. Too bad it drowned. This is the year Gorgeous Boris won the Golden Girdle Trophy for the most melo- dious and soft voice in that section of the MISS AMERICA CONTEST. Kay Ofcharik goes into her tenth year as private nurse and bat boy for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jenelle Melton has been appointed chairman of the problem solving dept. of the Wades- boro Hospital since everything is her fault. Annette Westerman has just made her third million selling choice tid bits from used banquet dinners. This makes her very happy. Roberta Romasco has just published her new book, And Me Too , along with being clinical instructor in burns. Jane Agnew has taken over Miss Cauble's job as house mother since she has had ex- perience in mothering others. The house daddy is named Doug. Becky Tate, Army Nurse, has been assigned to care for underweather officers at the Fort Bragg officers Club. The new head Nurse in the operating room, Jan Tuller, also clinical instructors in the Frog Test Requisitions, has taken a leave of absence to await the arrival of RAP TULLI-ER . Anne Castor, head nurse in Pediatrics and co-owner of the Mary Car Co. has just given birth to an 18 lb. son named Chester . Jane Baldwin, her husband and daughter Barbara J ajja have just made a million sel- ling coffee flavored Diet Rite Cola, which Jane collected while she was in training. April Rogers has legally opened up her new drug store. She specializes in Alpho-Equal Pills. The store motto is A Happy Crow-Dook to You . Jaye Martin House, urology instructor, has just built a new home from her left over kidney stones for her ten children. Anne Sullivan not only made it to the altar but to the D. R. and gave birth to a beautiful contorted baby girl who is triple the woman her mother is. We hope this will give you some idea of who and what we are and that you will see fit to let us hold our reunion on your Planet. Sincerely, Graduates of 1963 4O z .fy . vv. A 1 110 !7 President . . .
