Their work really began in the summer, however, as they planned an outer space theme for the first dance of the school year and spent hours cutting and paint- ing spoon men and planets. In step with theeunifying spirit of the Space age the 1958 council strove to strengthen the student body's bond of oneness: realizing that student sentiment favored a school ring to replace class rings, the olii- cers, in February, examined various designs and stones, finally choosing a ruby in a cushioned setting with the school motto, Ad jesum Per Mariam engraved on the band. The council planned the all-school Mission Mixer and at day's end, weary but exul- tant, they counted the section returns, totalling 1230 dollars, half of which was donated to the Propagation of the Faith, half towards this year's Student Council project, a new stage for Barrett Hall. Then they turned their successful hand to writing a school con- stitution, to furnish students with a written expression of the student body's aims, poli- cies, regulations, and activities. Before the outgoing nine retired from office they in- stalled a. shrine of Our Lady in the student council room in memory of the late student body secretary, judy Pedretti. To the new student council they then entrusted the cares and joys of their ofiicesz hours of work shared,,the accord reached by discussion, another member's thoughtful thank you for a job well done. Especially, though, did they bestow the chance to learn and grow through the formative channels of student government. nit 53 it M.. 38 'fi
