Student photogra- phers Mary McCarthy and Sheri Moffatt shoot from all angles with the speed-graphii' camera purchased for the school publications Ever since those early September days when the theme and layout were only scribblings in the editors' notebooks. the Shield has been a family affair. Wfhen help began to come from all corners of the school - the typing room, the art room, the dark room - even when Sister M. Modesta good-naturedly climbed to the roof and braved Pacific winds for the faculty'division page, we thought that autumn fever was prompting this special interest. Yet even in the frenzied Spring semester, cameras snapped and typewriters clicked for the Shield to produce a book eight pages larger than the previous year's and covering all the new organizations that have joined our Mercy family. VCE DID IT AGAIN! Lee Pryzborowslti, subscription com- mittee chairman, and Rosemary Griffin, Pat Hanley, Janice Smith, Alice Kapler and joan Malloy smile over the fact that the student body supported the yearbook 10051 for the third consecutive year. Seniors, launching wholeheartedly into the drive, reached the top on the first clay, OUT TO THE SOFTBALL FIELD. THEY, TOO, MADE DEADLINES, Shield typists Terry Peralta, Sue Greenwood and Arlene Nollevaux spent many hours preparing copy for the printers. THIS ONE'S MINE! Loyola Leveroni hands returns to Sue Carpeneti, patron committee chairman, while co-work- ers Pat Marra, Marie McCarthy, Margo XVarnicl-c and Judy Blanc tally results of a successful drive. Sections 12-1 and 12-2 obtained 10011 in subscriptions and patrons before the fall drive was an hour old.

I E TW mercycrest We knew an issue of Mercycrest was going to press when we saw Peg, Loretta, Jean, Sue, and Kathe dash to Room 213 after school, where they and the junior journalists chewed pencils over layouts, Put their heads together over captions, and met problems, like fitting eight inches of copy into a four-inch space! Occasionally Kathe would race upstairs to develop a much-needed neg, meeting Jean and Sue on route as they roamed the building taking a poll of student opinions. During the year the staff was privileged to meet Bishop Sheen and cover the profession ceremony of the Sisters of Mercy at which he officiated. By means of a survey they aided the student council in JEAN PARRINELLO Assistant Editor KATHE McDONNELL Assistant Editor Q CLAIRE COOK JULIE DRISCOLL MARY SCHMIEDEL Business SUE MIFSUD Assistant Editor determining section reactions to a proposed school ring and widened students' horizons by interviewing professional workers in different fields: a laboratory technician, a department store buyer, a newspaper editor, and the administration of a school for the handicapped. Ground-breaking for the neighboring Merced Branch of the San Francisco Public Library prompted a local feature, one of the many by which the staff promoted community relations. The editorials in Mercycrest, which were displayed at four local high school journalists' conventions which the staff attended were lauded for their national and international, as well as local scope, supporting the papers' t'W0-year rating of All Catholic in the Catholic School Press Association.
