How was I wont, in days of other years, To watch the loitering sunlight from below Mellow the mountain walls of Mercersburg V In mystic twilight's glinted afterglow. II. Those sunset skies ! Those mountains firm and strong ! They meet each other at the close of day, Their tale of love an ancient poet sang, That primal love of Uranus and Gaea. ' III. I've watched them often there at Mercersburg 5 It seems to be a favored trysting place, The mountain clasps the sky with gentlest touch, The sky entwines the mountain with her grace. IV. They linger fondly, each in other lost, Reluctant doth the sunset sky depart, She goeth backward and her latest smile Kisses the mountain with love's artless art. V. Then silence falls 5 the stars begin to gleam, The clouds their purpling shadows softly throw The day is ended. Whence that matchless light It is the sunset sky's bright afterglow. VI.
