How was I wont, in days of other years, To watch the loitering sunlight from below Mellow the mountain walls of Mercersburg V In mystic twilight's glinted afterglow. II. Those sunset skies ! Those mountains firm and strong ! They meet each other at the close of day, Their tale of love an ancient poet sang, That primal love of Uranus and Gaea. ' III. I've watched them often there at Mercersburg 5 It seems to be a favored trysting place, The mountain clasps the sky with gentlest touch, The sky entwines the mountain with her grace. IV. They linger fondly, each in other lost, Reluctant doth the sunset sky depart, She goeth backward and her latest smile Kisses the mountain with love's artless art. V. Then silence falls 5 the stars begin to gleam, The clouds their purpling shadows softly throw The day is ended. Whence that matchless light It is the sunset sky's bright afterglow. VI. So from the record of our college days lk mellowed lingering radiance too doth flow, This Karux of the days of ninety-six It is the waning year's bright afterglow. 8 ..m.m.,...::..r.A W. . - .fmm...,.4......--.....g.,...----.-. .. ., -A .-.f....,. ,- A, - , W- ., -L-- - ,.. .-.. .. . Th Cl. s of '96 has excelled in almost every department of skill and strength e as and has contributed more energy to the various enterprises than any other class. Take her in athletics. The grand success of the athletic department has been almost entirely due to the excellent Work of the 'class of ' 96. A ma- jority of the foot-ball teamyvere '96 men, none of Whom could be equalled for brilliant plays. The class also Won most of the prizes on Field Day, and we are sure that the success of the base-ball team Will depend on her men. However, our superiority in the Scientilic and Literary departments of the school has been even greater than in athletics. Five of the seven men constituting the Monthly staif' are '96 men. The Prize Debate, which took place on the evening of 'Washington's Birthday, was left entirely to '96 men. As to their oratorical ability, there need be given no more evidence than the fact that they have taken- all the prizes in declamation contests. We would not be justified in closing this history Without personal refer- ence to a few of the bright stars of the class. There is I-Ieilman, the adept in music, Whose piano strains are the Wonder and admiration of all who hear them. Next We will mention Huyett, the Shakespeare of Alexandria, who is not satisfied unless he has every school scene Worked into poetry. Of foot- ball fame We will mention Hagey, the famous heavy Weight center-rush, Bahner, Schneder, Dively, Grove and Hay, Whose massive strength and irre- sistible rushes Were too much for the Academy sluggers. Others Whom I must mention are B. Black and Reed, masters of human feeling 3 Epler, Who combines in his character sufficient ability to be a master of languages and, at the same time leader of the Guitar and Mandolin Clubs, Detrich, the adept in Latin, and J ones, the peer of Sullivan and leader of the Banjo Club. There are numerous others Who deserve special mention, but space will not permit. We are sure that your ideal of our class, from these brilliant facts, cannot be other than high. After graduation, although We Will still maintain our organization as the giassxgf '93, our interests will become less common, but We are sure that mem- hc Q io ave ,constituted so remarkable a class, will also win for themselves igh honor 1n life. It is not a record of wrong and endless strifes ' and struggles, but of hard and diligent study. Do not . think, however, that We are dead and not alive to our V duties outside of the classfroom, especially those of the ath- I, AN let-1c'field. For in looking over the records of the Field A Day Sports you will find many names of Juniors among lp ,I Q I if the list ot' winners. There are some Juniors, who partici- -. i t pated in those events, who deserve special mention : 192, Knight, who won the 'L Hundred Yards Dash in eleven qllj seconds, is a Junior. And Loudon, the strongest man in the school, who put the sixteen 4161 pound shot for M05 feet, defeating easily his opponents, is a Junior. Both of these men played on the College Foot Ball team. Knight, at full back, by his mighty punts and numerous long gains, and Loudon, at left guard, who on account of his excellent Work has been elected captain of next yeartsteani, contributed largely to the team's success. C. A. Richelderfer, also a Junior, Won the Junior Hundred Yards Dashff So you see We secured at good share of the prizes. XVe will also be represented on the base ball diamond. But these are not all the accomplishments of our noble class. lVe have in our class several other famous men, who do not care so much for athletics, but devote nearly all their time to study This has enabled us to produce such men as, James Kennedy Moorehead Thompson, our Cicero, who has made already a most brilliant record for himself by his Wonderful oratory. On several occasions, whencontesting against Seniors, he has been awarded first or second prize. And Bridenbaugh, our future Paderxvski. Then comes Albright, our studious boyQ?j who lately has been granted a leave of absence from English class, due partly to an overtaxed brain from studying too hardC?l. And so We might go on Writing page after page about the many virtues ot' this Wonderful class, but We have not the time nor the space, besides it would be unnecessary as the fame of our class has been spread abroad so extensively 21 .ay 1- '-ma. -az..-J zg.'.L':1-L-G4.kf.Z-2:5 -gi-2 -.Lal 1 . -4 2- that every person has heard of us. HISTORY OF THE Washington Irving Lit. Society. X-xl :wif 4 I ,f ,uv XX , O record the history of a society that is in so flourishing a con- dition as the Irving, is an undertaking upon which one I naturally enters with much pleasure, and yet, at the same pp 0.5, time, feels that it is an arduous task. ,The Work is. tak-en up f' if with pleasure because no other emotion can preside in the ' 4 N mind of one Whose duty it is to speak of such Wonderful and 5 ,, , av unparallelled progress as has been characteristic of the Irving Society during the past year. The Work may be looked upon as a task, when the fact is taken into consideration that it is justly, Without having the ac- count appear as prejudiced to a greater or less degree. But we shall endeavor, as far as possible, to Write a history, fair, and free from any spirit of rivalry, trusting that something may be recorded which shall prove interesting to the friends of the Society, which shall induce other students to join hereafter, and shall serve as an incentive for continuing and even excelling all past records. Careful research shows that on the 16th of- November, 1865, the YVashing- ton Irving Literary Society had its birth in the famous Diagnothian Hall, which was then in the possession of the Diagnothian Literary Society of Marshall College. Here, with twenty-six charter members, was founded the society whose career, from that time, has been most brilliant and glorious. The motto adopted by this early society was the well-known Latin quota- tion, H I pward and Onward. Built on such a motto, as a foundation, it is not to be wondered that a struct ' almost impossible to record such advancement . ure was rea-red which has amidst '1 '1 -' . never wavered lu Lists and lll'LlS but has st 'l triumph- In the year 1870, a change was made in th ' h u . e motto: fLet us put on the Armor of Light, was adopted in Greek letters which ' and g 'il 1 , IS still an inspiration ,H uu L to the members of the society. Meetings were held weekly for an indefinite period, supposed to have been several years after the organ- ization. Then owing to all of the members leaving - QFEQSQ, the sehool, the society was broken up. ! In 1888, owing to at division in the Irving So- ciety, eight members left, and being sworn in by ai 'li A ' Marshall man of Mercersbnrg, renewed the old or- ganization of Marshall Society. From that time Q meetings were held at irregular periods, until the fall ot' 1893, when the society began to hold regular meetings and since that time has been improving yearly. At the present time it is in a very liourish- ing condition. Last year the membership was thirty-four, and this year it numbers forty-l'ou r. 'llhe work which has been accomplished by the society has been very sat- isfzlctory. ln the declznnation contest of Dee. 13, a Marshall man was awarded the tirst prize. 6' ss' E' ff 8 Egfr X 22.1 f who Y ,1 53 . ,4-XXW q. ,zigigfr . , L ,V ',,:--rg. is , ff 4 53 f fi - -hge -i -1 W. egg. 2 -:Hb 32 1 ,- X . x 1 , ,V :IIA 'nfl . x' 'f 'WHT 'E 'i - ', Q-.Vw xx, 1- ' -14 .:, -, J-., ..1 I 17.1 if -xg i,L.-4, rf' . WAS a night in Fall, as you well know, Wlieri Doctor says that spirits go, And here and there wander about, Searching for things, that are standing out. It was near Hallow e'en at Mercersburg, And it seems that some of the boys had heard That every Prof. would be out that night, To see that the boys behaved all right. But the boys determined to be ahead 5 So the night before was chosen instead, To bring all things that could be found From town and country all around. As soon as supper was put away, The boys went out for their usual stray And as the night looked much for rain, The Profs. went backto their rooms again. And they little dreamed of the boys' intent And little on what their minds were bent. So the boys were left alone and free, And as happy as any boys could be. Down near the station, on a little green Stood an old worn-out threshing machine, And this a band of boys made for And placed in front of the college door. Its a wonder by all they were not seen, As they passed H North Cottage with the old machine But Doctor was rocking his baby dear And so the boys he did not hear. And boys who can schenle and work thi W' ill surely make their mark some day. And all I ask from those concerned, Is to see that things are all returned. And then an awful cheer arose, As Doctor brought his speech to a close 5 VVhile there behind the Profs. all sat, Not knowing what to think of that. The other Profs. all looked at Knapp, Like after a real hard thunder-clap. s way They knew that the boys had got ahead, But they didnlt like what Doctor said. I , ,T Close to the edge of the water, an oak, the survivor of ages, ' Stood g and there they halted to try their hand with the rifle. gj A paper some feet in size was tacked on the mighty oak' s body, il ll And from it a very short distance the Profs. each one took his station. l i The one with stripes on his breeches first tried his hand with the rifle, , l If And after a minute of sighting, a noise was heard then a silence, it And all to the oak in a hurry rushed to see where the hole was, But nowhere in all the big paper could any mark be discovered, l gi But nearly two feet below, the marksman had erred in his sighting, 4 Then again he said L' I will try it, I know this time I will hit it. My Good Old Hat. My good old hat ! I will write of thee, For thou hast been of great service to me g Thy beauty, once rare, has faded and gone, But thou art remembered for what thou hast done. For years thou indeed hast, when out of doors worn Quite fully protected from rain and from storm. Thy mission, as all from thy rim may surmise, Is to cover the head and to shade the eyes g And surely no hat e'en though it be new, Can fuliil this purpose any better than you. ' Although long use has made you look rough, You nevertheless, still contain the best stuff. Many hats may excel thee in beauty or girth, But to thee are but shadows, in intrinsic worth g For most of them last but a year or two, When thou at least five hast already passed through And if carefully used, I shouldn't wonder a bit ' If thou could'st be worn for another time that. I placed thee away in September last, To honor and venerate for services past : ' Thinking not to need use you thenceforward at all, But to let you hang silently up at the wall. If perchance I might see thee when in deepest thouoht And rejoice at my bargain when thee I bought, But alas I thievish hands bent on gaining a treat, Thou was taken from the wall an emergency to meet The Iiend having stolen my military cap, My only resort was to thee, oh best hat. Of late to save you from insult and abuse, I have found another hat which in thy stead I use. It cannot approach thee in renown or awe 23 7 So to use for one stolen will not be unsage. 78 Y v 7 1. It has no intrinsic beauty, There's nothing about it grand, It's only a call to duty 'When swung by Simon's hand. Nor are its notes always dear To the boy who, with lessons unlearned, Must at it's summons in the classroom appear, And be told a task he has earned. But, Ah ! it has a harsher sound, Which makes a poor boy quake, Wlieri Tuesday night comes 'round, And he his speech must make. A speech before a crowded house Of jeering boys and smiling girls, Witli his heart and his liver, perhaps, in his mouth, And his brain in a woeful whirl. But such petty trials we need not fear, They but train us in life's dark morass, Our little bark to better steer VVhen youth'slighter days are past. Oh l then we'll think of our training well, VVhen'er a chance we'll have to use g Oh ! then we'll think of the College bell Wliicli once we almost thought to abuse. NVhen after years, a score or mo1'e, Have on time's fleeting Wave been born away, Perchance we'll come as we did of yore, Back to the old school some Commencement day May the same old bell then call us together, We, the girls and the boys of days gone by, Renew old friendships that time cannot sever Reinstall old memories which never can die. ' l S05 And then as we climb the College hill May the Old Bell's melody our welcome fix, Then our thoughts will roam of their own free Will, And bask in the memories of '96, . That Little Black Hat. ' You have often seen that little black hat, Which belongs to a friend very dear, It's rim is too small, and its age, what of that '? Why its older than many boys here. When uniforms came it was placed on the shelf, And I had thought that its service was o'er, But that lovely blue cap was taken by an elf, And it's pressed into service once more. But remember kind friends, that respect is e'er due, To that noble form found underneath it: And what e'er you have done, I trust 'tis not you That has made it a source of unjust wit. i , , ,- , E.: if eff E ...rf .- f 'Q 3 e F' CP S ? : j y 1 CWW ' 'rwiq V' f 1- .2 7.-If-5' . 1' -' N : -1:1v'.f'vf'Q5 5 :12 p W S liil'-.fi .. - -- Q S 1 - ... ,Q M511 7 f 81 7 1 ,, ,V I Ur -L .1 'lf rl X, :M i A V, a, 'l, ,V 1 f V 1 . 4 1, , E 1 1 , , ! li Wi V P l i S f f 1 3,5 A .95 F, Ml M 1' z ,NJ NUM V1 ,211 :wi 4,5 'I ,i 'R If ' i .
