86 TRACK AND FIELD Track 81 Field HIDE 81 SEEK n your marks. Get set. Go! While their opponents counted the seconds, Ml's tracksters took off to yet another season of firsts. A strong foundation of experienced veterans and enthusiastic newcomers made the I986 Islander track and field team a definite threat to KingCo rivals. These runners and jumpers hid from no one, but no one could find a way to dampen their winning spirit. Athletes with cross-country experience tackled the distance runs while lightning-fast sprinters blazed past their opponents in various meter and relay events. The Islanders, however, excelled in all areas as they searched for victory. Even the hurdles presented no obstacles to this group of talented tracksters. Though the absence of some of last year's seniors could have created a weak link in the shot put and discus events, underclassmen with promising potential ably filled the empty shoes. This depth promised a glorious season for MI fans. The energy, excitement, and enthusiasm so evident in their daily workouts marked the Islanders' as the team to beat. As senior Steffen Nelson explains, Track is fun because everyone out there is cheering for everyone else, from the first-place to the last-place finishers. Their opponents could not find them in the cloud of dust kicked up by their flying feet. But, in I986, Mercer Island was definitely IT. And at the finish line . . . it's all lslanders.'
