86 TRACK AND FIELD Track 81 Field HIDE 81 SEEK n your marks. Get set. Go! While their opponents counted the seconds, Ml's tracksters took off to yet another season of firsts. A strong foundation of experienced veterans and enthusiastic newcomers made the I986 Islander track and field team a definite threat to KingCo rivals. These runners and jumpers hid from no one, but no one could find a way to dampen their winning spirit. Athletes with cross-country experience tackled the distance runs while lightning-fast sprinters blazed past their opponents in various meter and relay events. The Islanders, however, excelled in all areas as they searched for victory. Even the hurdles presented no obstacles to this group of talented tracksters. Though the absence of some of last year's seniors could have created a weak link in the shot put and discus events, underclassmen with promising potential ably filled the empty shoes. This depth promised a glorious season for MI fans. The energy, excitement, and enthusiasm so evident in their daily workouts marked the Islanders' as the team to beat. As senior Steffen Nelson explains, Track is fun because everyone out there is cheering for everyone else, from the first-place to the last-place finishers. Their opponents could not find them in the cloud of dust kicked up by their flying feet. But, in I986, Mercer Island was definitely IT. And at the finish line . . . it's all lslanders.' Boys Soccer KICKBALL he sport requires more endurance than most others in the known world. Teams play with twenty-two men, two goals, and a round ball dotted by octagons. Games usually last ninety minutes, not including the approximately ten- minute halftime. World-wide, matches attract the largest crowds of any major sports, but one nevertheless finds the stands at Ml to be sorely lacking. But, hey, who cares? The game is soccer, and it is alive and kicking at MIHS! More than just a group of kids kicking a ball around, soccer forms a sophisticated sport requiring much strategy and skill. Varsity coach Gordy Osborn, luckily, found that talent in a bumper crop of excellent iv and returning varsity players. This year's team is a mighty bunch of guys, boasts center- forward Greg Olds. The strong I986 squad set its sights on the playoffs and even the championships. Leaving nothing to chance, they organized a novel team attack while improving their individual skills. Our new strategy that we have developed with a lot more short balls than long balls will be a great wma I9 . SX asset to the team, explains Brian Keith, left wing. But, while the varsity ran around the mats with the big boys, the jv also produced an outstanding season, ripping up the field with standouts Don Braman and Matt Galvin. On the other hand, first-year men Matt Gilchrist and Marc Antezana greeted MIHS with a romp through KingCo with the freshman squad. So stop kicking around the idea of maybe going to a game.
