Girls Soccer ASTERCID eah, they're supposed to be tough. But, like, why haven't I ever heard of them going to state or anything? Must not be that tough. But, I did hear about that one girl, Julianne somebody. And, oh yeah, that Kim chick. Do they sell concessions at their games? Tough? The members of the I986 Girls Soccer team trained year- round for their season by running, eating nutritious food, and mud wrestling. Yeah, these girls were pretty tough. Actually, they didn't take pre- and post-season health that seriously, but their level of play this year might easily have given that impression. The fifteen-member varsity squad presented a new look all around, starting with first-year coach Dottie Simpson, who added a nice combination of communication, skill, and intensive training. Next, the squad adopted a fresh attitude. Teamwork and solid effort dominated the field. MI didn't produce just any batch of would-be mud wrestlers, these were the hottest Islander soccer players to come out of the girls' locker room for some time. Julianne Craig, Kim Keller, Erin Estep, and Mari Boin led this skilled group of body blow artists. Although the finesse of their passes stunned spectators, the power of their collisions presented a scene not unlike an Asteroids video game, except on grass. Yet, no matter how talented the team, one thing keeps MIHS from its ultimate destiny of the state championships: KingCo, for one reason or another, has always played girls soccer in the spring, while all other leagues play in the fall. However, this arrangement changes next year. For now, though, Ml will have to be content with homegrown competition. Never fear, the Islander asteroids can knock them all out. lniured Lisa Norton smiles as her team wins but 1 0 z it 5 J, sg , L . 1 if . . .
