Wrestling BIG-TIME rime-time. The lights dim a little darker. The crowd cheers a little louder. The excitement hangs a little thicker. 'ILADEEEEEZZ AND GENTLEMENNNNNIIII Welcome to Madison Square Garden, where tonight, the Libyan Assassin, Muammar the Monster Mangler of Mucho Muscles, will take on the pride and joy of Smalltown, USA., Raygun Ronnie Rambo, in the heavyweight title bout of the century! They enter from opposite corners, two fat tubs of lard trying to win an Oscar while appearing to kill each other. The punches are fixed, the match is fixed, and the winner is ...I -N - ' . .. MN ' 'T fixed. The only things that aren't fixed are the audience's emotions. ls this wrestling? Wrongo, Vern. The lhigh-schooll matches are really exciting. Every Islander should see one, advises senior Eric Grabowski. They're nothing like big-time lwrestlinglf' In their own way, the 1985-86 Ml Wrestling team members have already hit the big-time. Playing their games with unmatched ferocity, Mercer lsland's Matmen literally ripped through their competition. The twice-weekly matches, however, simply culminated a week of strenuous, two-and-a-half hour daily practices after school. Only the ,t---Q. ',. . A as w sf wg.. I. . Q, . ' .Y 'G-Q. Varsity: Back, Coach Haschak, Greg Gartrell, Eric Grawbowski, Jim Nicholl, Todd Osborn, Jay Peterson, Coach Jackson. Front, Jeff Jackson, Barry Bunin, Mike Maloof, Kurt Mcttenry, Greg Deon, Jole Mezistrano. 72 WRESTLING dedication of each individual kept the team running along. Everyone was trying their very hardest in every single match, describes Grabowski. Sometimes their hardest was a li too hard. Stinging roughness penalties, however, served only to point out the fires of competition which burned in the Islanders. Dominating in the I I5-I68 pour category, the team led a balanced and experienced attack into KingC action. Unlike the fat phonies on cable tv, these wrestlers truly their games in the BIG-TIME! Girls' Varsity Basketball FLAME GAMES air flying, voices screaming, they run up and down the hardwood floor. A medieval battle scene? A police riot? Negative. Just a little Cheryl Miller action. The l985-86 Girls' Varsity Basketball team may have lacked a skyhook, but they most definitely had sparks. The competitive fires deep within goaded them time and time again to amazing feats. Though the squad sported a less- than-satisfying record, the team members played well together, supporting each other with incredible spirit. Some players shined this year. Specators could spot the flaming head of team captain Anne Lueptow muscling her way in the middle to pull down crucial rebounds. The scorching hands of senior Sherry Spak did most of the scoring, seeing as she had the art of net-ripping down to a science. Other players, like junior Julianne Craig, also supported the squad with speed and effective shooting. Only as a team, however, did the Islander girls demonstrate their poise and burning desire to win. Through tri-game losing streaks, the group kept its spirit and pulled out two or three wins to break the slumps. With superb coaching from Nile Clark, the team learned to deal with defeat and use it to fuel their competitive drive. Clark stoked the coals, and the players exploded on the court. In the game of basketball, teamwork is of the essence, and Ml showed league foes what it's all about. As far as spunk goes, these girls were burning down the house in '85-86. And that's not just a bunch of hot air. 74 VARSITY GIRLS' BASKETBALL
