I In iris., x L 5 -. . . We are and always will be a I I ,, . good team, says captain Jeff Taraday of the I985-86 Ml Boys' Swimming St Diving squad. That quote basically sums up what the team is about. Guts. When they practice, they practice hard. When they swim in a meet, they swim hard. And they don't tlinch under pressure. Before an important competition versus Newport, the entire team, in order to rev up their spirit, ranted and raved over how MI planned to beat their opponent to a bloody Boys' Swimming 81 Diving HICKEN pulp. Even the coach couldn't calm the squad down. They looked their KingCo foes in the eyes and ran them right off the road. The next day, a determined force of Islanders waterlogged the Knights by more than twenty points. Of course, the team does spend quite a bit of time goofing around, much to the chagrin of Coach Frank Ceteznik. Sometimes swimmers hide under the bulkhead just to aggravate Ceteznik. But, Jeff assures, it 's all in good fun. As for the coaching, Taraday praises, Frank can be a nice guy. He is basically a paperwork coach. He does a great job making up lineups, and spends a lot of time lecturing. Ceteznik's lectures and pep talks must work. Like the Mercer Island Reporter said, Winning must come easy for the MI Boys' Swim Team. Swimming is but another winning piece on the impressive gameboard of sports at Mercer Island High School. We're workin' it like nobody's business, quips Jeff. Ain't no chickens 'round here. 70 BOYS' SWIMMING 8. DIVING

Wrestling BIG-TIME rime-time. The lights dim a little darker. The crowd cheers a little louder. The excitement hangs a little thicker. 'ILADEEEEEZZ AND GENTLEMENNNNNIIII Welcome to Madison Square Garden, where tonight, the Libyan Assassin, Muammar the Monster Mangler of Mucho Muscles, will take on the pride and joy of Smalltown, USA., Raygun Ronnie Rambo, in the heavyweight title bout of the century! They enter from opposite corners, two fat tubs of lard trying to win an Oscar while appearing to kill each other. The punches are fixed, the match is fixed, and the winner is ...I -N - ' . .. MN ' 'T fixed. The only things that aren't fixed are the audience's emotions. ls this wrestling? Wrongo, Vern. The lhigh-schooll matches are really exciting. Every Islander should see one, advises senior Eric Grabowski. They're nothing like big-time lwrestlinglf' In their own way, the 1985-86 Ml Wrestling team members have already hit the big-time. Playing their games with unmatched ferocity, Mercer lsland's Matmen literally ripped through their competition. The twice-weekly matches, however, simply culminated a week of strenuous, two-and-a-half hour daily practices after school. Only the ,t---Q. ',. . A as w sf wg.. I. . Q, . ' .Y 'G-Q. Everyone was trying their very hardest in every single match, describes Grabowski. Sometimes their hardest was a li too hard. Stinging roughness penalties, however, served only to point out the fires of competition which burned in the Islanders. Dominating in the I I5-I68 pour category, the team led a balanced and experienced attack into KingC action. Unlike the fat phonies on cable tv, these wrestlers truly their games in the BIG-TIME!
