Are you going to practice? No way! It's Monday! And have you seen the weather?? Yeah, answers the teammate. Let's go play golf! Ah yes, Mondays. Monday means much more to a cross- country runner than to the average Islander. Monday means eight to fourteen miles with one mile intervals at Pioneer Park. Monday separates the men from the boys. The boys go running, the men go play golf. Tuesday brings the team back together with a long, slow, distance run. When these pavement- pounders hit the road, their games always go into overtime. They're out there, day in and day out, rain or shine . . . well, in Seattle, Iet's just call it rain or snowfall. Reaching for Success Together was their motto, and success they reached. Both the girls and guys posted their most productive seasons ever. The boys cranked out a third place finish in KingCo and a seventh in state, while the girls won KingCo and took fourth in state. Commented team captain Andrea Risso, The team really worked together, better than they ever have, and the girls are only losing one varsity member, so they should do as well or better next year. Also out there in the same weather as the postman lrain, sleet, and snowl are the not so noticed JVers. Let us not forget that they run tough through the same workouts and races, working just as hard .or harder than the more publicized varsity. Cross-country runners-in the long run, they run longer! 66 CROSS-COUNTRY

ome like the vault. Some like the beam. Some like the bar. But, they have one common link- all are members of the l985 Ml Gymnastics team. Girls from all grades dedicate their afternoons to perfecting twists and turns and developing graceful yet difficult routines. Each Islander princess spins valiantly across the mats, a maroon-and-white blur, trying to hit that lucky number in the judges' hearts. Move ahead nine spaces. , . , eight, nine. Payday! Natalie VanOppen Gymnastics PINNERS This year's squad particularly excelled in the vaulting and floor exercises categories. They may not be Mary Lou Rettons, but they certainly can smile over their success. In the regular season meets as well as KingCo and SeaKing competition, the team outscored their opponents with finesse and pride. llThe team has incredible depth and skill, gushes senior gymnast Debbie Dorkin. This depth and talent showed through as the Islanders raced out to an undefeated start. The twirling, tumbling, intertwining girls of Ml left their Eastside opponents spinning their wheels by the wayside. On the wheel of life, these talented athletes hit a perfect ten. Proud of their accomplishments this season, Ml's gymnasts look forward to future years of competition and success. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, the gymnastic community should spin tales of lslander achievements for years to come. Like a record, baby.
