4 THEME The bright sun rises, the down of ci new doyp And before that fire dims, Life shows its true colors in the GAMES PECPLE PLAY. Wake up, it's l986. Start. Does homework have a monopoly over you? Are you scrabbling for a place on the team? Has chasing the girl in the front row begun to seem like a trivial pursuit? lf so, then you've caught lT. Yes, lT. No, not AIDS, stupid. Life! They say life is a game. They're wrong. Life is a GAME!! And high school is like owning two hotels on Boardwalk and planning construction on Park Place. Pass GO and collect 200 dollars. Sat-is-FAC-tion! But even high school life is not always as fun as getting a triple word score with the description of a biologically impossible act. lNow that's excitementll Trying to squeeze a twenty-foot station wagon into a two-foot parking space ata time when all respectable people are still abusing their alarm clocks does nothing for most people. Go directly to jail. Do not pass GO. Do not collect 200 dollars. But, despite the trials and tribulations, this year was anything Just another morning iogger. Senior Erin Estep ploys hide-and- seek with the authorities as Ml's finest tickets o resident. X but trivial. For this was THE year. i985-86. The one and only. Standing out above the crowd. The few. The proud. The year. You know the feeling of unique superiority one receives from knowing the name of Albert Einstein's barber? Uhh-huh. And it was all ours. Take a CHANCE card. So we played. Maybe we didn't know we were playing. Maybe we didn't want to know. Maybe we didn't care. But we were. Freshmen emerged from Candyland. Sophomores engaged in Trivial Pursuits. Juniors felt the pressure of Perfection. And Seniors? Well, Seniors had the Monopoly. We played cat-and-mouse games with the parking attendant. We played hide-and-seek games with the authorities. We juggled homework, iobs, and members of the opposite sex. We sweated over sports, clubs, and members of the opposite sex. And we played bored games with lectures. We dawdled in the Romper Room. We fought space invaders for a parking spot. And the new radio station toyed with our minds. The dice of l-5 rolled right over us. BelSquare drew a full house. Deuces and hairstyles were wild. And the Seahawks' dreams landed on Superbowl. Rambo killed Ms. Peacock with an exploding arrow. Ronbo couldn't grab a clue. The U.S. took a risk, baseball praised Carlton Fisk, and Madonna's bellybutton was left for the trivial to pursue. Pay school tax of 150 dollars. But we had fun. For deep inside we knew that Life is just a game, and that one must play the cards dealt, roll with the dice, and even pay fifty dollars to get out of jail. We matched our wits against the world, and we won. We came through, not unscathed but whole, not overwhelmingly but with pride. Roll again. lt's our turn now. We are going to show, and we are going to say, it's all in there, Mll-lS, the GAMES PEOPLE PLAY!
