WAR GAMES? No! World Peace! say Islanders during their foreign travels. Everyone wishes for world peace at one time or another, but many students from MIHS are taking constructive steps towards that goal. Islanders have traveled to a multitude of countries, from Europe to Central America, to spread understanding between cultures. They celebrate not only the differences, but the similarities between Mercer Island and The World. Two of the most popular international programs are the infamous IWanna see a picture of the latrine I dug?J Amigos and the more traditional People to People organizations. Both involve fairly lengthy stays with host families, a situation somewhat akin to landing on Free Parking, except for the fact that you have to talk! All such trips, however, involve hardships as well as rewards, These affect those who stay behind almost as much as those who do the serious globetrotting. How is one supposed to react when one's best friend is off partying in Paris for two months out of the summer? Hey, it takes a few weeks just to get past the l'Why don't we call . . . No, he's in Ifill in country of choicelf' stage! For the traveler, though, benefits abound. Aside from the obvious pleasures of beautiful French women, delicious German beer, fantastic British music, and gorgeous South American weather, the student gains a wealth of knowledge I c,,,, J, ,,,,,,,, ..,-...-.-,--,... ..-..-..., Jenny Hirst, Nanette Allison, and Alty Willoughby enjoy the lack of a drinking age in Athens, Greece. On a higher level, the exposure to different cultures broadens the student's viewpoint and makes him a more well-round and capable person. lt's like a pok game: one's goal is to leave with more than what one had to begin with. Obviously, the student reaches that objective, but what can he off his gracious hosts in return? Hopefully his small gestures of friendship between countries will increase goodwill and help people avoid playing war games. You know the games you used to play in ninth grade, when you told your mom that you were going to see Bambi, but in actually Body Heat perked your hormones that night with explicit scenes not fit for freshman eyes? This year's films have affected our lives in many ways, the cast of our dice skewed by Paramount Pictures and Twentieth-Century Fox. The tough-guy-with-a- bandanna look of Rambo entered the fashion scene. Desperately Seeking Susan gave us cross jewelry and tapestry pants. And movies such as Weird Science and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome produced a whole slew of popular songs. Many movie industry successes iammed local theaters. Rambo, Back to the Future, and Pee We Big Adventure appealed greatly students. Unfortunately, a multitude of bombshells produc a veritable Hall of Shame. In the eyes of Islanders, My Science Project, The Bride, and Nine Deaths of the Ninja, as well as many others, bit the proverbial dust. Nevertheless, whether totally super-wow-neat or major gag cit movies are simply games of illusion, games we all play to escape reality.
