N13 Before, during, and after school, the sight of people walking in and out of the Student Center, running to and from their lockers, and generally milling around in that area greets many an lslander's eyes. Each person who strides past wears the fashions of the '8Os, celebrating the variety of Life. One girl might appear in black stirrup pants and a white shirt buttoned up to the neck, whereas another may prefer red stirrup pants and a paisley shirt or sweater, At Mll-lS, people took advantage of the liberal feeling towards clothing by wearing bright, festive colors, very tight YX pants, or revealing shirts. Yet, some felt more comfortable in the styles that have stayed with us for years. One could still find many students wearing polo shirts and Levis. ln the shoe department this year, women had the greatest chance to express themselves through footwear. l-lightop black shoes frequented the halls often, and Keds were also popular. However, while some players wore outlandish clothing, and others had more discriminating tastes, everyone added to the Game of Fashion on Mercer lsland. i lABOVEl Clark Von Trotha sports the five o'clock shadow, sportcoat, and black shoes look. F KINGS AND IJEENS e setting of the Homecoming essboard remains a suspenseful nd exciting process. Thursday morning, You stroll own the hall. Suddenly, you spy a rge group of people huddled round a yellow poster. You pproach the scene cautiously to iscover what all the commotion is bout. The black ink that spells your ame sears indelibly across your ind. You have been nominated for omecoming Royalty! Throughout the span of a single ay, you change from a typical IHS student into a god. People ou don't even know come up to ou and say, 'lCongratulationsl I oted for you! l iust know you will win! Everyone suddenly becomes your best friend. Even that girl who used to pass you dirty looks now smiles and says, l-lil All the attention boosts your hopes land egol sky high. You worry over what in the world you will wear to the big dance. Ah, but don't celebrate yet. First you have to win the competition! All your friends assure you confidently lUpper Rightl Senior Royalty Sydney Onishi and Steffen Nelson: lCenter Rightl Sara Albrecht and Matt Haba. lLower Rightl Freshmen Royal- ty Judd Murphy, Allison Hughes, April Appel, and Chet Crile. that you shall emerge victorious, but nagging doubts linger. As the l-lomecoming assembly approaches, you seek constant reassurance that under no circumstances can you lose. The odds are on your side. Still, during the program, your sweating palms serve as a reminder that anything can happen. The suspense holds you tongue-tied. Time stands still. Before you know it, the assembly is over. You didn't win. What?! There must be some mistake! Why aren't you standing in front of the school with a gorgeous guy in a tux next to you? Your life is over. Once the spate of uOh, l'm so sorry whines has diminished, you are left standing alone outside the gym. You hear a voice. lt's Tom. 'l ., . go to l-lomecoming with me? So you lost a turn, so what?
