he Middle School is past, the High School awaits. ou want to act cool, but you don't want to tempt e Fates, in . . . CANDYLAND. Ever wonder what it feels like to ay against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Ever been a freshman in high hool? The size. Everyone talks about e size. Freshman year may be a e of new pressures, of new ople, of new places and new actices, but it is first and foremost time of new sizes. The size of the gameboard has creased, whole slews of freshmen lost every year in the Lollypop st of the Mll-lS campus. The size the stakes has increased, whole of freshmen discover every that college is no penny-ante .laddi eats a school lunch while Mitch decides he would rather starve! game. And the size of the pieces has increased, whole slews of freshmen receive neck sprains every year from trying to talk to seniors. And the homework ain't too miniscule either. Freshman year may seem a Candyland to many, an escape from Middle School, but it more closely resembles the mousetrap. Rather than a haven of maturity, high school offers a position of inferiority to incoming Gingerbread boys and girls. Jeez, that guy's smaller than his backpack! More than any other, the Class of '89 had to bear with inordinate amounts of abuse. The sophomores acted superior to them. The iuniors acted superior to them. The seniors ignored them. And they all made iokes about their size. Yet, through it all, the Freshman class realized that the horror stories were not true, that the myths were exaggerated, that the insults were for others' egos. Life at the high school may have been rough at first, but one soon discovered that it was iust like life anywhere else. Just a game. Joelle Jackson, Kim Allen, you look MAHVELOUSY FRESHMEN l95
