Deadline night. As Depeche ode tunes blare into the darkened alls, the dedicated members of the l985-86 Mercer Hi Times ewspapeer staff scrabble esperately to stuff themselves with s much pizza and Diet Coke as possible while playing word games with the rest of the school. Seriously though, Ml's student journalists do more than simply have fun and let the dice fall where they may. A little more, at least. The majority of the student body sees only the educational and entertaining final product, but a great deal of work goes into molding those letters and words in an exciting whole. From half-heartedly racking their brains for news stories to gorging themselves at Shakey's, with all the screaming at the typesetter and dredging up headlines and just plain sitting around in between, the Islander scribes seem to enjoy toying with their sanity. These supposed serfs obey the rule of their peerless leaders: Advisor Alita Kiaer, Editor-in-Chief Beth Butowicz, News Editor Jeff Tang, Opinion Editor Dan Su, Feature Editor Leif Gustavson, Sports Editor .lennifer Chao, and Business Manager Rolfe Berge. However varied this motley crew may seem, all the players in the newspaper game come together to form a more or less harmonious whole. Gamblers and Wavers, athletes and comedians, brains and heavies-the Hi Times has room for all. And each has a style all his own. Cries of Pinch it! and Dio fly across the room along with X-acto knives and blue pens. Sending halftones to Kathleen, ten-inch articles ballooning to fifteen, drawing last-minute graphics, stuffing six-pagers, and scrounging for ad credit shall remain memories for these junior authors to treasure. The results of this scrabbling, on the other hand, has delighted readers the school over. When it comes to putting together words, these quick pens win the grand prize. MERCER HI TIMES 183
