Listen carefully, I'm only going to say this once. Name at least five members of the Mercer lsland High School Symphonic and Concert Bands, as well as the instruments they play. You have ten seconds. BAND??? Wait a minute . . . The huge Ml band receives acclaim for its excellence year after year. They compete in KingCo, in Solo and Ensemble contests, and in competitions in Vancouver and California. The band also plays at least two concerts a year, both of which are in front of a full house. However, if they are so active, then how come no one ever hears from them? When a football player shaves his head, he is the major l l 8 BANDS topic of gossip for at least a week, but when a band member does something equally ridiculous, all he receives is a snicker. Everyone knows who starts for the basketball team, but which student can point out the first clarinet? Why is the band so anonymous? First, the uniforms could be at fault. Basically black and exposing no flesh, they don't attract much attention. Secondly, the band members are incredibly diverse. No standard band haircut, language, or way of life exists. They don't wear Adidas sweats or letterman jackets. Each one is humble, modest, casual, and dedicated. When asked why they STILL play instruments, most people having given that up LONG ago, they usually just smile and refuse to comment. Hmmm, veddy suspicious. What could they be up to?? Perhaps they have discovered a higher sense of consciousness in the not-so-trivial pursuit of musical perfection and therefore don't nee the recognition of their peers. But give them some respect anyway. lt doesn't matter if they're- not in the limelight, Mr. Layer and Dr. Morosic have every right to be just as proud of their teams as the . athletic coaches are of theirs, This year, I2 Symphonic Band members were chosen for all-state honors: Julie Duncan, flute, Kamala Jain, oboe, Orna Askenazi, flute, AnneMarie Crawford, clarinet, Amy Florsheim, clarinet, Steve Gillespie, tuba, Wendy Haas, flute, Kirk Lange, clarinet, Heather Meredeth, flute, Liz Smith, clarinet, and Cindy Williams, oboe. You did it, Gertrude, you've just won a new car and the ultimate set of GINSU knives. CONGRATULATIONS!
