Alternative Sports and Music OTHER GAMES o the Barney Miller Game is not as popular as Battleship, so what? lt's still a game. These are the games that no one watches. These are the games that everyone plays. These are the games for the average Islander. These are the games of the everyday. Water Games. Taking the gang out in the Boston Whaler for a little Waterskiing. Braving the wild winds of the west on a fragile windsurfer. Hoisting the jib and trimming the main while sailing. Trying out the newest in made-to-fit boatwear: a kayak. And stroke-stroke-stroking through the Montlake Cut in a crew boat. Hunting Games. Popping off skeet as if they were Trivial Pursuit questions. And waiting patiently hour after hour for the slightest bite on the fishing line. Mountain Games. Clambering and rappelling across boulders that look like Mr. Potato Heads-just to get to the top. Schussing and tucking across the white expanses of Crystal or Alpental-just to get to the bottom. And hiking through muddy I I4 ALTERNATIVE SPORTS forests to clear lakes-just cause they're there. Motion Games. Making like an Ironman while bicycling through a triathlon. And, of course, traveling in style: by skateboard. Music Games. Dressing up like flamingos and banging garbage cans. Dressing up like Fred Astaire and dancing around on a frozen football field. Dressing up like angels and straining a few vocal cords. And just plain dressing up to pull a few strings. And to play a few games along the way. The majority of students at MI don't play their games in shiny uniforms, before cheering crowds, under bright lights. They take their games home with them. From the unheralded informality of a pickup football game, to the unheralded formality of a winter concert, the true sports for Islanders arise from the unorganized competition of friends. Playing for fun and pride, not KingCo championships, freshmen and KABOVEJ Traversing the frozen tundra. lRIGHTi Kayak to die! Die to Kayak! ef- ,ftuemtiuufms --fs A ff. A-f....:1 f: f--- N . --.
