8 CARS Pick up a car. Pick up ci wife. Spin that wheel and go . . . DRIVING THROUG LIFE. -Dad, can l have the car tonight? -But I'm late, Mom!! l gotta use the wagon! -l-le's driven the past two timesl l owe him a ride. Ah yes, the sounds of fall. Just as the crunch of football pads and the crackle of leaves underfoot echo in the crisp air, so too do the plaintive cries of students who absolutely must have use of mobile transportation. fAnd we ain't talking bicycles here, Vernll From the terrified and terrifying sophomore in Driver's Ed, to the lucky junior piling half his Chemistry class into the l-londa Civic, to the cool senior whipping past drenched freshmen at bus stops everywhere, the students at Ml cruise through Life on spinning wheels. The game has started. lf you want auto insurance, pay 500 dollars. l-low the student drives, however, depends upon himself. And his car. And his parents. And his siblings. And his great-grandparents from Topeka. The selection of mobile apparatus runs the gamut: station wagons Cboatsl to economy cars fmotesl, Porsches fspeedl to Rolls fgreedl, trucks froarsl to beaters fnever boresl. And of course the official Mercer lsland car: the l-londa Accord. And don't forget those funny ones with blue stripes and flashing lights. Yet, whatever the perils of Ml streets, the preferred mode of student transportation remains driving. Driving to school, to movies, to games, to lunch, to the south end, to the north end, to BelSquare, to Seattle lWe-ell, maybe notl. Driving through Life. So spin that wheel. lt's easier than paying for gas. in it
