Jones, Lionel Richie transposed. Hello , a popular song recorded by Lionel Richie, was performed by the Jazz Choir at this year's fall concert. V.K.'s solo impressed many at the event. Also a member of the jazz choir, V.K. commented on the sharp uprise in quality of the program. He attributes the improvement to Mr. Potts' arrival, We've had a jazz choir for two years nowg however, it didn't really get go- ing until this year. 'He's brought a whole new aspect of music to the school. What's in the future for this talented tenor? There might be a Barber Shop quartet . . . jazz choir goes beyond the traditional concert choir. The members must audi- tion for a spot on the stands at the beginning of the year. Meeting two hours every Monday morning and for one hour on Thursday afternoons, jazz Choir works on new styles and tech- niques. Under the direction of Mr. Potts, the choir has started on a new note. One member commented that, 'going from last year to this year is like going from Basic history to American Studies. A String Bass, drums, and the occasional saxophone are used to empha- size the different rhythms. The choir looks to a bright future with the excellent teaching of Mr. Potts and enthusiasm of the members. jazz Ensemble 45

This avenue must be closed by the road block of contemporary America. Barry Goldwater and Communist and Liberal subversion must be stopped at all costs. The versatility of Mercer Island's musicians is enor- mous. Not content to limit themselves to the traditional high school band format, the musicians have created several smaller bands. The following is an account of the jazz Ensemble from the very mouth of these multi-talented musicians. Comprised mainly of people, the jazz Ensemble con- tains four girls. This however does not hinder the band 's ability to play good jazz. Music by Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, the Delta Rhythm Boys and The Cats and jammers Kuls prevails in the jazz-like atmosphere generated in the band room every other morning. The director of the jazz Ensemble is Mrs. Saba, accom- panied by the able Ms. Frank. The Band refuses to play for money, preferring instead charity benefits. This fortunately has not dampened the enthusiasm of its members. I've gotten a lot out of jazz Ensemble, and it 's taken a lot out of me, said one embryonic, Wrath-afjqliated member. The energy and creativity put forth by these musicians picks up the tempo of life here at M. I.
