DEBATE top David Mayowski, David Wright, Alan Sarnowski, Draton Harrison, Dan Stoner, jeff Weber bottom john Boyle, Pete Smith Though unquestionably one of the smallest clubs at the high school, the debate team could well be the most active. Members participate in up to ten tournaments per year, held on Fridays and Saturdays at schools around the state, as well as state and national tournaments for the most capable speakers. The team, assisted by Coach Alan Sarnowski, hosted its own tournament in December, which was attended by 35 schools from around the state. Team members spend uncounted hours preparing their debate arguments. Speaking events include Lincoln-Douglas debate, which deals with value-oriented topics, extemporaneous speaking, in which the speaker has half an hour to prepare a seven minute speech, expository speak- ing, impromtu speaking, and oratory, to name a few. Having brought home two trophies in just the first two tournaments, the debate team represents Mercer Island well at gatherings of the best and brightest the state has to offer. Debate 3 7
