, it- N: fll Automen Strike Three, you're outl Competitive. Talented. State Champs. Usually these qualities refer to the Mercer Island Basketball team. Not this time. The team being reviewed is the Boys' Tennis Team. Last year they won Kingco, District, and State. Again, this year, they had the chance to win it all. Marc Jarvis' goal was just that. I want us to take it all, Kingco, District and State. The 1985 Boy's tennis team was talented in every grade. The freshman class was led by superstar Marc Blum. The sophomores sported a returning champ Matt Zisette. Scott Beers and Chris Roa rallied for the junior class, and the seniors had three returning letter- men who helped the team immensly. These were Brad Craig, Gardner Morelli and Marc Jarvis. jack Dills, not to let him get by without notice, had some extra help from the Girls, coach Geoff Mills. Coach Mills gave pointers and coached the JV. When aslced about Coach Dills, senior letterman Gardner Morelli exclaimed, He's the greatest, we couldn't have done it without him. Chris Roe smashes it to the opponent Boys' Tennis 191

1 I ' ' 5 IJ' Lxig GIVE ME A SI-LOCK! LETS ROCK!! The burden of pressure hung mightily around the shoulders of the 1985 Islanders, but they never lost sight of the gold ball now shining so bri htly at Mercer Island High School. They proved their dedication, they proved th t this was the year of the Islanders. It was the Islanders v. the state and the state l t. The victory was cut-and- dry. No referee's call. No mistakes. No missed shots. doub . about it-THIS WAS I 71 FINALLY! The state tournament was a hoops holocaust their crushed opponents averaged thirty three points per game with a shooting perc ntage of twenty six percent. The Islanders were the defensive catalysts of the state forfing their opponents to take either quick shots, bad shots, or no shots. Defense was what won it all. They won Kingco, District, Regionals, and State. The first lVI.I. Team ever to accomplish all of those titles. The Islanders finally shrugged off their reputed inability to win the big one. The Mercer Island jinx was never to be brought up again. The greatest factor in the state success was the fan support. While the fans' only problem is that they stand up too much, it is proof of superb support. just another reason for one to be proud to be an Islander. B' I.. . i K . IN 6f ' MQW UI , 5 l R i 4
