GIRLS ' BASKETBALL VARSITY Front Row: Becky Winter, Lezley Smith, Kathy Wood, Lisa Li. Back Row: Coach Nile Clarke, Julianne Craig, Holly Kroon, Shelly Birch, Sherry Spak, Liz Lightfoot, Assistant Coach Suzy Barcomb. Not Pictured: Michelle Berg. A dramatic change has taken place over the past two years in girls' basketball. Making a o- 40 record look like a typographical error, the Islanders have come on strong. Last year was the second year the girls had ever made it to the play-offs. From a pre-season outlook of Not Bad by the Journal-American, the hard-working team has already secured a spot at Districts. With the hot shooting of Becky Winter, top King-Co scorer, the play-off future is more than bright. The dazzling successes of this team has several sources: Senior Liz Lighfoot, Holly Kroon, Lezley Smith, Lisa Li, Becky Winter, and Shelly Birch have played together in the M. I. H. S. program for over three years. Coach Nile Clarke attributes success to the experience this core of athletes brings onto the floor. juniors Sherry Spak and Michelle Berg add heat with their shooting from the wings. Newcomer Kathy Wood and Sophomore Julianne Craig lead the Islander streak down the court at point guard. The friendships among the team, both on and off court, contributed more than anything to the successful season. Hitting Alaska with a blizzard it's never faced before, the girls took fourth place in the Juneau-Douglas tournament over winter break. Playing the top teams from both Alaska and Washington State, the girls battles it out in the land of the igloos. One month later, the Islanders hosted the Boomers from Down-Underf' This Australian team from Bulleen and Templestowe added to the exciting Islander season. 132 Girls' Basketball Qlilf

This year there were many people who received a varsity letter but few who placed high in the King Co tournament. Among those were Alty Willoughby, 2nd, Dave Bell, 3rd, Eric Gra- bowski, 3rd, and Jim Nicholl, Ist. Mercer Island finished its regular season with an 8-6 record and tied for 4th in King Co. About nine grapplers qualified for the regional tournament. Preparing for tournaments and matches takes a couple hours of strenous practice everyday after school. It is worth the reward of wrestling well and knowing that you'll be noticeably better at the end of the season. Especially for those grapplers who go on and reach their potential at regions and state. -PT FRESHMEN.
