St. Patriek's Day was celebrated with an Irish Cabaret following performances of Brendan Behan's tragi-comedy THE HOSTAGE directed by William J. Flynn with sets and lighting by Bob Keane, choreography by Christina Klotz, and musical direction by Rosemarie DilVlarino. The drama season, ending in May, closed with the 1928 American comedy classic, THE FRONT PAGE. Directed by William J. Flynn, with sets and lighting by Bob Keane and technical direction by John C. Schenck, this frantically zany concoction of reporter and policeman mayhem delighted packed houses. Like all MCCC presentations, THE FRONT PAGE offered students discount admission and played a special dress rehearsal for senior citizens. When admission is charged to any MCCC presentation, the cost is reasonable, and thus such productions provide the opportunity for everyone to enjoy our vast cultural heritage. Then began, on an average of one a week, a series of lectures llike the one on Harold Pinter by Guy Vaesenj, one-man or one- woman shows lHarold Rome being the lirstl, special presenta- tions lsuch as the performances of Donizetti's opera, Rita',l and concerts of inlinite Variety. MCCCE own Concert and Stage Bands under the direction of John Kulpa presented Winter and Spring Concerts in conjunction with the MCCC Chorus directed by Paul Schied. Both groups also participated in graduation cere- monies. The recently established Per- lorming Arts Department had a busy and diversified Hrst year. It began way ahead ol' the rest of MCCC with the annual Tomato Patch Workshop, a summer pro- gram for high schoolers interested in theatre production. The pro- gram closed with the musical com- edy NO, NO, NANETTE. Shown here is one ol' the many chorus numbers from that 1920's show. At the same time the fall semester classes began, ENGLISH MUSIC HALL played a return engage- ment for several weekends in Sep- tember, directed by Jason Barnes. Dramatic presentations of the year began with Guy Vaesen's play THE PRESENT directed by Mr. Vaesen and starring Frank Bilaneio, Phil Brusehi, Tom Moflit, Mary Ann Seville, Andy Hornyak, Don ,lones and Annette Rutherford. Like all produc- tions, casting was open to the entire community. January is an extra special month for this department because ol' Mr. Flynn's British Theatre Seminar and other courses taught at lVlCCCis European base ol' operations - London. ln addition to providing students with three academic credits, it gives them the chance to travel, learn about theatrical professionals, take backstage tours and attend theatre in the cradle of English language drama. Pictured at left is the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, one of the stops on the Seminaris lively itinerary. Also visited annually is Players, Theatre where Edwar- dian music hall entertainmenl is a tradition. 93

OTHELLO One of the most difficult dramatists to present successfully is Shakespeare. Au- diences may have seen other productions of his tragedies and eomediesg contemporary actors may have difficulty with the Bard's blank verse dialogue and soliloquies. MCCC's production of Shakespeare's por- trait of the affect of jealousy on love ranks hrst in its long line of successful presenta- tions. ln an abridgement by Mr. Flynn. OTHELLO presented Donald Jones with the greatest challenge of his illustrious ca- reer, but this multi talented actor rose to every challenge. With sets by Bob Keane, technical direction by John C. Sehenek and direction by William J. Flynn, the produc- tion was a triumph. Cast: Donald Jones Ben Fults Frank Bilaneio Frank Cirillo Sunni Farrington Andrew Hornyak Tom Moffit Kathryn l.
