KX ' it From the Editor When Janet Kozaehek came to us with her entry for the yearbook cover contest which, incidentally, was the only entryj, we asked to see more of her work. What she presented to us were these little gremlins she called groinks. We fell in love with them, and, because of such films as STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS being so popular, we felt that the groinks would be MCCC's contribution to the trendg you will End these froliking aliens throughout our pages. What we seek with this unique addition is to create a link between man and his universe. Too often, we find, that in our quest for self attain- ment our views become narrow and self-centered. We neglect to consider the far-reaching con- sequences of our pursuit for the better life. The continuing fuel crisis, depleted fresh water -lux A XX Q X A , ,. xs. The wasteful ' fb methods of our fore-fathers will no longer do. The i --5-Z world is rapidly changing, and it is now left to us, kk' Q Q I the youth of this country, to unhesitatingly meet V X f this challenge. You can usually find him in his office, ET 121, buried beneath a pile of papers and constantly bombarded by students in need of his advice. De- spite the load he already carries, he is planning to add yet another full curriculum to complement MCCC's five aviation programs. Mr. Buchanan came to us well qualified. He holds a B.S. degree from Trenton State and a Masters from Lehigh in Administration. He is a Federal Aviation Administration Designated Safety Counselor and is a Certified lnstrument Flight Instructor. His Hight ratings have earned the college certification under the Federal Aviation Regulations Part 141 as a Private, Commercial and lnstrument Pilot Flight School. Coming to us from Camden County College in 1971, he served as a consultant to the development of the aviation programs here, but was not an official faculty member until 1974. He now serves as Asso- ciate Professor and Co-ordinator of the Aviation Programs. Highly contientious of his role in the community, he served the State of New Jersey as a consultant in the study on vocational aviation programs within the state, and, each year, under his direction, MCCC holds a Flight Safety Clinic in which not only students are invited but also members of the sur- rounding community. lt is because of this devotion to the competency of pilots, this total dedication to safety and the realiza- tion of lVlCCC's role in the aviation community that we dedicate this book to him. The Viking Staff FLIGHT TEAM VICTORIOUS Eleven MCCC students and their advisors, David Buchanan and Thomas Metz, traveled to Beaver County, Pa. to participate in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Region Xl air meet. Competition was keen and, after three consecutive days of patience, skill and devotion, MCCC's students took the second place team award, losing to the host college, Beaver County, by only two points. Among the other competing teams were Dowling College, University of Maryland and University of Pennsylvania. This prestigious victory assured MCCC a place in the NIFA finals held in Nashville, Tennessee in the spring. Of the seven events which students participated in, the four air events include power-on and power-off accuracy landings, message drop and navigation. The three ground events were aircraft preflight, aircraft identification and computer accuracy. Each event stressed pilot skill and judgement, and they demand the highest degree of accu- racy. MCCCE own Concert and Stage Bands under the direction of John Kulpa presented Winter and Spring Concerts in conjunction with the MCCC Chorus directed by Paul Schied. Both groups also participated in graduation cere- monies. The recently established Per- lorming Arts Department had a busy and diversified Hrst year. It began way ahead ol' the rest of MCCC with the annual Tomato Patch Workshop, a summer pro- gram for high schoolers interested in theatre production. The pro- gram closed with the musical com- edy NO, NO, NANETTE. Shown here is one ol' the many chorus numbers from that 1920's show. At the same time the fall semester classes began, ENGLISH MUSIC HALL played a return engage- ment for several weekends in Sep- tember, directed by Jason Barnes. Dramatic presentations of the year began with Guy Vaesen's play THE PRESENT directed by Mr. Vaesen and starring Frank Bilaneio, Phil Brusehi, Tom Moflit, Mary Ann Seville, Andy Hornyak, Don ,lones and Annette Rutherford. Like all produc- tions, casting was open to the entire community. January is an extra special month for this department because ol' Mr. Flynn's British Theatre Seminar and other courses taught at lVlCCCis European base ol' operations - London. ln addition to providing students with three academic credits, it gives them the chance to travel, learn about theatrical professionals, take backstage tours and attend theatre in the cradle of English language drama. Pictured at left is the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, one of the stops on the Seminaris lively itinerary. Also visited annually is Players, Theatre where Edwar- dian music hall entertainmenl is a tradition. 93 Cast: Anthony Besel Tom Blackburn Phil Bruschi Frank Cerillo Tom Collins C-ary Fackenthall Sunni Farrington Rick Firstman Barbara Centra Claire Cerdes Mike Hall Andy Hornyak Bob Jahn Louise Juliano Kathryn lVla.hrunit' Eric Metz Tom Nloffil ,loc Piscione ' jim Price Peter Sterman Fred Walker THE by Ben Hecht 81 Charles MacArthur As the year progressed, the theatrical calendar included The National Mime Theatre in BEYOND WORDS. ln February, The Washington Square Repertory Dance Company performed on a stage which would be renovated and reconstruetedduring the spring to accomodate future dance presentations, such as the Princeton Ballet and the Mercer Dance Theatre. St. Patriek's Day was celebrated with an Irish Cabaret following performances of Brendan Behan's tragi-comedy THE HOSTAGE directed by William J. Flynn with sets and lighting by Bob Keane, choreography by Christina Klotz, and musical direction by Rosemarie DilVlarino. The drama season, ending in May, closed with the 1928 American comedy classic, THE FRONT PAGE. Directed by William J. Flynn, with sets and lighting by Bob Keane and technical direction by John C. Schenck, this frantically zany concoction of reporter and policeman mayhem delighted packed houses. Like all MCCC presentations, THE FRONT PAGE offered students discount admission and played a special dress rehearsal for senior citizens. When admission is charged to any MCCC presentation, the cost is reasonable, and thus such productions provide the opportunity for everyone to enjoy our vast cultural heritage. Au- diences may have seen other productions of his tragedies and eomediesg contemporary actors may have difficulty with the Bard's blank verse dialogue and soliloquies. MCCC's production of Shakespeare's por- trait of the affect of jealousy on love ranks hrst in its long line of successful presenta- tions. ln an abridgement by Mr. Flynn. OTHELLO presented Donald Jones with the greatest challenge of his illustrious ca- reer, but this multi talented actor rose to every challenge. With sets by Bob Keane, technical direction by John C. Sehenek and direction by William J. Flynn, the produc- tion was a triumph. Cast: Donald Jones Ben Fults Frank Bilaneio Frank Cirillo Sunni Farrington Andrew Hornyak Tom Moffit Kathryn l. QSLJSUO 1200 OLD 'VRENTON ROAD June 20, 1978 Dear Reader, A few years ago, when the world was a different place and people had priorities which seesred a little different from what they are now, VIKING was ready at graduation. This year's book will reach you a little late, not because of any problem with the publisher, but because the final task of completing the book was left to just two i.ndividuals, neither of whom had the sixty hours a week that it takes to plan, organize, produce and distribute this chapter i.n NEOC's history. Perhaps you think the book is small. How big was your contribution? Perhaps you think that too much has been left out. Perhaps there are names spelled wrong and faces incorrectly identified. Perhaps the greatest tragedy of all is that there were sirrply not enough people around who cared - except about the final product. Who do you think puts a book like this together? You were supposed to. Your activity fee helped pay for it. EH you lmow where that hunk of cash was going? Perhaps thi.s is a statement about society as a whole. Man's concern for the world he lives in is evidenced by the way in which we squander our fuel supply, pollute our rivers, air and minds, and close our eyes when sights becane too unpleasant. We leave the job of cleaning up to someone else. We leave too much to someone else. You left this yearbook to me and my faculty advisor. What does that say about the other nanbers of the class of '78? I knew sane of them frcrn classes I shared with them. I knew about two hundred of them fran the face they gave me to put in the graduates' section of this book. Who and where are t.he rest of them? Thank God, it's finished. wound Michael Nostrand, Editor Class of '78 N...-Qfiil -N., - f 2 ' 4 9 .w , ' r M.- ., . ,, K, VY- - sv ,X X svf f 'I 1 , 1 , r 1 M KG, Af X MERCER COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE Iohn P.
