Like them, we have our leaders too. Leadership is one of the quali- ties that differentiates our class and makes us special enough to treasure our achievements. Leaders in our school look at different subjects with an eye to the future: they possess insight and in- telligence, that enable them to not only set goals, but also obtain them. With the departure of Mr. McQuillan, a vacancy was left. Ms. Albert has taken over the position of Administrative Assistant. Among her responsibilities are the Social Studies, the Language department. Health. Transportation. Attendance, and all extra cumcular activities. She ts also in charge of the Juniors. All problems in the proceeding areas are dealt with by her. Ms Albert has been involved in the field of education for 13 years now. She used to teach Social Studies and has worked in other high schools in Gxnmack. Jericho, and Suffolk. It is, therefore, that we have chosen to dedicate our year- book to him: our teacher, our coach, our friend. Have you ever passed by room 214 and felt the energy vibrating from within. If you have, Mr. McManus is to thank. His extraor- dinary personality coupled with his exceptional teaching ability has continually enriched the lives of many very special students. Coach McManus is the most un- derstanding of all men. This is evi- dent in his decision to coach the girl's soccer team. His deft playing ability, along with his never-ending patience allowed him to mold a semi-skilled team into a winning one,(well almost.) Mr. McManus also endeavored to coach Girl’s basketball and boy's J. V. baseball. In doing so, he earned the love, respect and friendship of each of his players. James McManus is more than just another staff member; he is a friend. He is someone who can be counted on to volunteer for almost any extracurricular event. Further- more, he will gladly assist any mem- ber of the student body in need. Mr. James McManus has proven himself to be an outstanding man. Long after we graduate, we will re- member him fondly. Always we will smile in recollection of what he has done for us. Always he will be considered by us, a treasure amongst the Mepham Staff. — Melissa Chalson — Ken Rauschenbach Abrahamsen-CIose 20 TREASURE CHEST A Teacher and a Friend Mrs. Ronni Smithline is both a dynamic and vivacious woman. Many students are unaware of the numerous contributions that she has made to Mepham High School. Mrs. Smithline has been in charge of the Junior Class and has proven to be both dedicated and hard working. This year she has taken on the additional responsibility as one of our guidance counselors. In addition, she is a dedicated teacher willing to help students in planning future careers. Besides being such an averant faculty member, Mrs. Smithline is also a friend to the students. She will never turn her back on a person with a problem, even if the student is not one of her own. Some fine examples of her dedi- cation to our school would be the various activities that she carried out for the Class of 1986. In plan- ning our Junior Class Dance. Mrs. Smithline gave up an entire week- end and stayed late after school on many occations to assure that our dance was a success. There was a time when the chances of having a dance were very slim. Yet she fought against much opposition so that those who really wanted a dance were able to see that goal realized. Her argument proved to be worthwhile, as the dance was a success. Those who know Mrs. Smithline will never forget the relationship they have shared with her through- out their years at Mepham. — Terri O'Toole PAUL COHEN Math JOSEPH CRITELLI English RICK CUCHEL English DARLENE CURCIO Special Ed PHILIP DELEA Social Studies RICHARD DIODATI Social Studies CAROL FAGEN Special Ed GLADYS FELDMAN Language HENRY FEUERBACH Math PHILIP FITZ Driver Ed MARYANN GARRETT Math DOUGLAS GEREK Gym MS. Running around be- tween three schools this year, she is still thought of here at Mepham as one of the most dedicated and hard working teachers in the school. She is one of the few teachers who can really relate to the students she has “the pleasure to teach.” Many of the Seniors will remember Mrs. Sie- gelaub from the tenth grade, when she was a full time teacher at Me- pham. She's spunky and full of fun. But she also forces students to work hard, putting forward 100 percent effort. She tries to build students' confidence in themselves. Mrs. Sie- gelaub is very aware of the prob- lems of adolescents and cares a great deal. She is a warm, loving person who is close to many peo- ple's hearts. She is always willing to help a student, but more so to help a person with the human problems that plague us all. She is one of the few teachers in the school that teachers and students alike would consider a friend. — Miguel Cima Pasquale-Smith 24 TREASURE CHEST MERRILL’S always there Valerie Merrill is a teacher in our school's Social Studies deparent. She instructs tenth grade European History as well as several electives such as Psychology I and II and Marriage and Divorce. She has the rare quality of being both a teacher and a friend to her students which is a difficult attri- bute to achieve. She is always willing to devote her extra time to offer guidance to students with either educational or personal problems. I can personally attest to her in- formative and quite entertaining lessons in Psychology I and II. Knowing Mrs. Merrill as a teach- er as well as a friend. I find her to be a very kind and caring woman who is quite knowledgeable in her field of study and dedicated to her work. Theme 28 TREASURE CHEST It was a healthy experience, in- deed, concluded senior Brian Purcell, concerning Mepham’s spirit week of October 26th. Mephamites of all shapes and sizes expressed their Pirate pride by wearing pajamas, hats and maroon, in addition to celebrating the 50’s decade and the 50th state. Throughout the five days, Me- pham’s students and faculty displayed their support of the Pirate's endeavors. Additionally, through the wearing of creative simples and undervest, stu- dents reflected the aesthetic aura that truly permeates each nook and cranny of the Mepham community. While the wearing of Hawaiian garb was indeed a break in the formidable monotony of daily Mepham affairs, 50's day seemed to highlight the inge- nuity and the flavor of Mepham. Many a Pirate payed homage to their various mentorsfwho ranged from James Dean to Richard Cunning- ham). Mepham’s resident rock band The Prowlers, played a vivacious set on 50's day. Prowlers' saxophonist Joe Halama commented that spirit week was nothing less than ALL RIGHT! However, bassist Dan Langdon was quick with the interjection, Spirit Week was more than all right, it was right. Friday, October 25th was designat- ed school colors day. There was a veri- table cornucopia of maroon raiment to be found. The student body's support was refreshing, indeed. — Jon Weinstein Spirit Week TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 29 culminating with our Homecoming and a victory for our team . . . Theme 50 ------- TREASURE CHEST Spirit permeated through the air and spread like a plague in Bellmore as Me- pham conducted its annual Home- coming Parade. Students as well as other Bellmorites put aside their week- end chores and participated in this ju- bilant occasion. It was 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Octo- ber 26th at the Bellmore train station, when participant in the parade started filing into position. Over twenty cars were adorned with Mepham parapher- nalia ranging from maroon and white streamers to spray painted lettering saying, 'GO PIRATES! Many different school organizations lent a helping hand in spreading the school spirit. The varsity cheerleaders, accompanied by Scott Perry and his unique body movements cheered their hearts out as they proceeded up New- bridge Road. The kickline also joined in the fun as they perfectly synchro- nized their amazing moves. The band added a special touch as they marched through the streets playing Hail Me- pham.” The J.V. cheerleaders were also present and contributed to the all around good time. The tradition of the King and Queen was preserved as Greg Johanson and Laura Pollock rode in a vechicle provided by Bell- more’s Subaru City. The S.S. Me- pham also made its annual showing as it sailed along with the procession. Also contributing to the parade was Spirit Week TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 31 as well as the Mepham spirit. Theme TREASURE CHEST the Nassau County Police Department and the Bellmore Fire Department. After the parade reached the school grounds the excitement drew closer for the main event, the annual Home- coming football game between the Mepham Pirates and the arch rival, Kennedy Cougars. Pirate fans added to the Homecoming spirit as they cheered their team on to eventual victory. The Pirates romped the Cougars as they pulled away with a 40-0 victory. The decisive win began with a 65 yard run by running back Andre Dixon, who ended up with 144 yards on 7 carries and 3 touchdowns. Santy Gallone then added a touchdown with a 65 yard punt return. Mepham then went to the air as Denis Dunathan connected with Rob Fegan on a 40 yard touchdown. Dixon then scored two more touchdown runs of 14 and 40 yards. Sean Givans then put the icing on the cake when he ran for a 55 yard touchdown. John D'Auria added to the Pirate victory as he went 4 for 6 on extra point attempts. Both the offensive and defensives lines were commended by all for their spectacular performance. The victory over Bellmore Kennedy was the perfect ending to a full day of Mepham spirit. Mepham’s true colors were shown during this annual display of pride. — Gary Brendel Spirit Week TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 33 Division TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 35 BAND TO Cm Emm. The members of this club not only meet even day but receive a grade for doing so. Whether this factor is a deterent or an attraction, the band is. perhaps, the most populated club in our school. The size of the club, however, is not what makes our band special, it is more the members. Way back in elementary school most of us began our musical training with the infamous scales and practice sheets. Most of us then went on to higher musical training in the junior high schools where watermelon Man became an integral part of our routine. Looking back on the years, it is difficult to believe that the same mu- sicians are tackling such masterpieces as Esplanade and New World Sym- phony. As a reward for our triumphs, the band members have been afforded the opportunity to participate in a number of cultural exchange trips. When those of us who are currently seniors first joined the band, we were immediately wrapped up in the tre- mendous planning for what was to be our first band weekend — and what a weekend it was! The seemingly endless hours we spent traveling on buses to Wilminton. North Carolina were noth- ing in comparison to the big splashes we made on the Carolinian beaches and on the John T. Hoggard High School Stage. The following year the band trav- eled to Bethesda, Maryland where we also made a big splash — only this year we were wading in the numerous pud- dles formed by the continuously fall- ing rain. Even the incliment weather could not dampen our spirits as we cheerfully waited for our guided tour” of the White House! A fantastic time was had by all in Bethesda. and we were to say good-bye to our friends at W'alt Whitman High School, but truly ready to say hello to the sun! Our director. Mr. Rockwrin. and our captain. Jim Callahan, spent many months planning what was to be the climax of our three years in band. We were heading overseas to Austria. Ter- rorism changed our plans, and w e were all. to say the least, disappointed, but we weren't without an alternative. It was California here we come, and go we did! The West was wonderful, and a great time was had by everyone in at- tendance. Being a part of the Mepham High School band is much more than just knowing how to play a certain note, to read a key signature or to travel. The Mepham band is made up of a group of musically inclined, enthusiastical students; it is a combination that al- most always strikes a winning note! — Melissa Chalson 37 ORCHESTRA Clubs 38 TREASURE CHEST Officers Anne Feuerbach — Treasurer Jennifer Carrano — President Jamie Kudler — Vice-President Courtney Perry — Treasurer Gina Raynor — Secretary Orchestra TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE CHOIR Acapella Choir TOP: Robert Kenyon. Members have contributed not only to the school, but also to the community. They had been involved for the past two years in a Latch- Key program. In this activity, volunteer students take time after school to aid elementary school children whose parents work. Student Government President Mike Sanfilippo and Vice-President JoAnn Aprile were very busy during the holiday season in setting up fund raisers such as the toy drive for orphans. Student Government also held car washes to raise money for both needy families and school functions. They were also responsible for setting up the Homecoming Parade and other school activities such as Spirit Week and the selling of carnations for Valentine’s Day. Student Government is a very important organization in Mepham High School Society. It is a basis for most activities that occur within the school. If there is an organization that builds the foundation for school spirit this is truly the one. By viewing the activities initiated this year, one can see that the Student Government has made life easier and better for not only the students at Mepham High School but also for the whole community. — Mike Sanfilippo Student Government TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 43 BUCCANEER Clubs 44 TREASURE CHEST TOP: Audrey Ormstcn. This year's staff has dedi- cated itself to maintaining and even surpassing the fine quality for which the Buc has been continuously com- mended. This past fall the staff attended a journalism conference at Columbia University. All wfere enthusiastic about learning new techniques and later adapting them to this year's ' Buc. Editor-in-Chief Linda Ventimiglia also incorporated new ideas which she learned by observing other high school newspapers. Linda kept the weekly editorial meetings, preplanned layouts, pulled quotes and many other concepts insti- tuted last year, although she made quite a few alterations herself. Linda changed the designs at the folio lines. The master head was redesigned and many new layouts were added. Managing editor Pam Silverman wrote a heartwarming editorial on the Special Ed. students. This received many letters commending the touch- ing way Pam captured these students. All of the individual departments were successful in maintaining interest- ing stories. For the first time in years the Buc had a sports section worth reading. Sports editors Chris Hassett and Scott Perry chose to print only school sports and high school related issues, which seemed to be a change the Buc needed. sections. The photography editors also did an exceptional job of providing quality pictures on time to accompany articles. In addition to the regular edi- tors, a Business Editor was added. Vicki Vecchione saved the Buccaneer with her charm by soliciting large amounts of ads. Lastly, the artists once again displayed their fine talents where needed. Advisor Jack Rice once again left the paper to the editors, although he was always there to help. He inspired many writers to reach beyond their limits and write articles they never thought possible. Jack Rice was con- cerned with not only for the Bucca- neer, but also for the well being of the staff members. Many times he was there to lend a helping hand. His time and advice will never go unnoticed. The staff meetings were always suc- cessful and enthusiastic. The layouts were tedious while at the same time fun. When the final product was pro- duced a feeling of accomplishment and pride was shared. As editor of the Buccaneer, I will always look back and remember the great times I had this past year, as well as the many friendships I have made. The entire staff deserves to be com- mended for the fine job they did. This has been an experience I will never for- get. Jack Rice concludes, I have always admired and treasured something that has become a rarity in this age: good, hard work. This year's Honor Society has taken on numerous activities and projects. Both the tutorial service and the Big Brother — Big Sister programs were continued from last year. The Honor Society provides free tutoring to any student who needs help in a class. Members could also volunteer their services as a big brother or sister to one of the Special Ed students. The volunteers ate lunch with their ''brother'' or sister” once a week. Our newest project was the Cerebral Palsy Trivia Challenge. This tight-knit group held fun- draisers which were successful due to the cooperation and devotion on the part of its members. One of the goals of thejunior Class was to raise money. A data-match survey was done to help everyone find the perfect sweetheart. The Junior Class was more than just a fun- draising organization. Every Thursday, mem- bers shuffled into the guidance office at 2:30 to join our devoted advisor, Mrs. Smithline. for the weekly meeting. Those members who went to extra help always came in later, even if it was just to catch the latest news. The pirates’’ recorded a 6-2 league record and an overall 7-3 record to finish 2nd to Garden City in the Nassau County Champion- ship. We started the season on August 25th on an optimistic note with 16 returning letterman from last season. In football, sometimes the plans you make don't come to fruitation. In our second pre-game scrim- mage, Denis Dunathan was injured and we would later find out that he would miss the first four games. Our offense was built around our quarter- back and we were not prepared to start the season by breaking in our back-up QB James McDermott. James did a fine job of filling in for Denis as he took us to first four games with a tough loss to defending Nassau Champs Plainedge 14-0, and a great win over a very tough W. Hempstead team 6-0. We thought that Denis might be ready for Garden City, our next opponent, but to Denis' disappointment, he was not as mobile as he expected to be and had to be replaced in the first quarter by Jim again. We lost that game 41-7, but it would be an inspirational loss to look back on when we would meet Garden City in the playoffs. After that devastating loss you would think that a team would fold but we tightened our belts and worked a little harder. We had already played the toughest part of our schedule. The next opponent lifted our spirits, as we were playing cross-town rivals, the Kennedy Cougars, at our Homecoming. The Pirates were ready and defeated the Cougars 40- 0. We won the rest of our league contests. Valley Stream Central 42-7 Calhoun 27-12 and MacArthur 15-0. It was the best record in 30 odd years at Mepham. Excellent! (con’t p. 118) Vars. Our daily practices have helped us work to- gether as a unit. Cheering throughout the football and basketball seasons, the varsity cheerleaders led by captains Sue Zullo and Dianne Degree worked hard to lift the school spirit and cheer the teams on, while also achieving victories of their own. On December 1st, we competed in the Nassau cheerleading competition held at Val- ley Stream North High School. We took third place out of 14 teams, missing first place by only two points. Later this year we hope to compete in the Long Island Competition. Al- though the other teams present tough com- petition, we think we can win. We would like to give a very special thanks to our coach, Mrs. Lambert. She went be- yond the ordinary role of an advisor; she helped choreograph our entire competition routine, and was definately an asset to the This year’s varsity squad consists ofJoAnn Aprile, Theresa Caputo, Vanessa D'Auria, Dianne Degree, Andrea Goodman. Cheerleaders TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 117 The playoffs were now upon us. We were to play the mighty Bethpage, and we prepared for the game by putting a few new wrinkles in our defense, who, I must say, was lead by our newly acquired coach Kevin McElroy. The big day was upon us. We outplayed Bethpage in the first half but the score was 0-0. Bethpage was stunned but came out in the second half and scored 13 unanswered points. With 4 min. 11 sec. to go in the game it happened. The Bethpage center snapped the ball over the punter's head and we recovered the ball. We then went to score on Brady’s 9 yd. run and D'Auria's extra point. On the next play we made the decision to kick an on side kick. D’Auria kicked to perfection to Tom Equinda. On the ensuing play, Denis called for a deep throw. He threw the ball down the field to Rob Fegan who beat his man. The ball hung up forever and finally came down in his hands and he ran the next four yards into the endzone. D'Auria kicked the extra point and the next is history. We had won. The feeling had to go down for me as one of the greatest moments in my life. My players and coaches felt the same. In football, the joy of winning the big game doesn't last too long when you are preparing to play Garden City again. The earlier loss had acted as an inspiration for the whole town. We lost the game 7-0. It was a hard fought con- test, but for whatever reason, we couldn't put the points on the board. Everyone is proud of our play- ers. It was a dream for everyone who plays the game to have. I'm going to miss our Seniors. I’ll expect the graduating seniors to get in touch with me and wish us luck. It was a great year, not because we just won, but because we got close to one another and we grasped our moment” in this part of our lives at Mepham High School. — Coach Goldman J.V. Its purpose is to aid the Special Ed students attending our school. This program was set up through the com- bined efforts of the school social worker, Mr. Herbert Lovens, and the National Honor So- ciety. Through these people students could volunteer their time. Upon our first meeting in September, we were matched up with students by Mr. Lo- vens. He paired us with students who seemed compatible to ourselves. As time went on, these newly formed rela- tionships grew. We, the students, gradually got to know one another. Meeting with our little brothers and sisters weekly, we formed a special feeling of confidence, trust and re- spect for one another. These expressed emo- tions between us led the youngsters to open up and confide in us their hopes, dreams and fears. Mostly what we try to accomplish is to make the youngsters aware that they have a friend to turn to for support and guidance in a time of need. Summing the program up, Big Brother — Big Sister's purpose was not only to act as role models, but also to provide these young- sters with a feeling of security and a sense of belonging. — JoAnn Aprile — Anthony Giangrande Big Brother — Big Sister 158 TREASURE CHEST ■ ■ ■ I I Latch-Key Latch-Key is an after school program where we, the students, take part in the look- ing after the guiding of elementary school students of working parents. This year Mepham students began chaper- oning Latch-Key trips. Excursions included such places as the Math Museum, the Science Museum and the roller rink. They have come from all over the world to visit America in order to learn our customs, language and way of life. This year we have two visitors from abroad. Arriving from Sweden we have Per Magnus Magnusson, otherwise known as P.M. and from Spain we have Josep Masso. Josep Masso — I live in Malgrat de Mar, Barcelona, in Spain, right by the Mediterranean Sea. There are so many differences between Spain and the U.S.A. For instance, the schoolday in Spain is from 9 to 1:20 and from 3 to 6 and we lunch at home. We do not choose our sub- jects, and mostly everybody takes the same courses. We are also in the same room every- day with the same classmates and it is the teachers who come to our room. Here there is so much fun being with different people each period and there's a lot more activities to join after school. I've been having so much fun here and I love New York, cheeseburgers, 24 hours of American T.V. and especially American parties, who doesn't, right? Peo- ple have been great to me and they really made me love this country. I'm sure I’ll never forget this year and its going to be really hard to say good-bye to all my American friends, but I'm not worried because I’m Definately coming back. Per Magnus Magnusson — I am the Swedish exchange student at Me- pham this year. The school was good and the people here are very open and friendly. There are many activities after school here and that is different from Sweden where you have to join a club if you want to do a sport. It wasn't too hard to adjust to the American lifestyle. The school had some differences though. The Swedish compulsory school is nine years and you start school at the age of seven and Finish when you are sixteen. You start to learn English in third grade. Here around New York there is a very high population com- pared to Sweden. There are more people in New York City than in all of Sweden. I will never forget this year. I have many memories from this year and I am sure I will come back to visit again. The wooden building was only two halls large and its six rooms housed a mere 150 students and six teachers. Course offerings were limited to only seven subjects and extracurricular activities inclusive of clubs and athletic teams were non-existent. A neighboring grammar school served as a cafeteria for lunch, the auditorium for drama produc- tions, and the gymnasium for school dances. In 1936 a modern brick building situated on 21 acreas of land opened and replaced the old school. It was named Wellington C. Mepham High School. The new school offered excellent facilities, expanded scho- lastic departments and increased extracurricular offer- ings. For example, by 1939 sports teams including foot- ball, baseball and cheerleading were bringing fame to Mepham, and such clubs as newspaper, Yearbook and Varsity M were already in full swing. Athletic clubs including boys' swimming, tennis, track, basketball, bowling, and wrestling had been started while the girls enjoyed badminton, volleyball, field hockey, archery, gymnastics, and softball. The forties also saw the birth of the newspaper (the Bucaneer) and the drama club (the Skull and Crossbones). More importantly though, the forties showed a common bond amongst the students. They banded together selling both candy and War Bonds to help aid the United States and the soldiers at war. Students of the forties, as well, had a flair for style. Young men with their short, exceptionally well kept haircuts, and young ladies all with softly permed hair seemingly enjoyed sporting in their bold plaid preppy outfits. This year the female genre was often seen in leggings stirrup pants covered by oversized shirts, while the guys were very fashionably dressed in their faded LEVI's button up shirts, and cardi- gans. The biggest pattern of the year was definately paisley as it showed up on everything from shirts to shoes. Speaking of feet, Converse high tops, Reeboks, and, can you believe, patten leather shoes were all considered stylish. Brand names such as Guess,JAG, Ton Sur Ton, I.D.. and Benetton were in such an abundance that we began to wonder if people were so insecure about their own names that they had to wear someone elses! No seriously, in the world of fashion, nothing is too trendy, too outlandish, or too costly; after all, so many people will contend that we are what we wear. When you used to ask Janie to borrow a pin she’d probably rummage through her pocketbook until she found a rusty safety pin — well, not this year. No one would part with her rhinestone or colored stone pin. That is because it was an integral part of fashion jewelery. In order to stay in shape in order to wear the latest in fashions, eating right has become increasingly important. Even the fast food chains have caught on to the salad bars and low grain buns. On the same note, exercise has become popularized by Jane Fonda and her workout. This workout can be viewed along with many others on video tape. The We are the World” project, sparked off by Bob Geldof s Band-Aid, was a major high point of the musical year. The year 1985 was one of both music veterans and newcomers. It contained a fast paced, never ending variety of musical accomplishments. Scritti Politti had the Perfect Way, while Sting dreamed of blue turtles, and A-Ha vexed that the sun always shined on T.V. Go West sent out an S.O.S when they saw Phil Collins inside out, but there is no need to worry, Howard Jones says that things can only get better. After Huey Lewis discovered the power of love, it set Whitney Houston wondering, how will I know if he really loves me? The love bug bit Bruce Springsteen too. Julian Lennon followed in his fathers footsteps, but realized it’s too late for good-byes. Duran Duran said their good-byes for a while anyway — Power Station and Arcadia had to Fight it out on the charts. The hottest thing for a musician to do in 1985 was to be on a movie soundtrack. MOVIE madness Although many saw the previous year in films as a slump, there were none the less many popular films and even some very good ones. Some call 1985-86 the great depression of film art. Those movies which deserve attention shall, however, not be put aside, as quality films should be remembered and recognized. Others that received attention must also be mentioned for regardless of whether or not they are of quality or turn out ephemeral should not matter. All of us want to remember what movies were in” this season. Perhaps the one which touched us the most was The Breakfast CLuh. It was a sensitive film, clearly depicting the strifes of different types of kids in high school. We could all relate to at least one, if not more of these kids —Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy and An- thony Michael Hall. It was a movie truly made for us, and it will surely always be with us, so long as we can remember what pains we felt as we were growing up. Another thing that this film did for us, and did well, was make us laugh. Its comedy was high-schoolish, realistic and most appropriate. Although The Breakfast Club was very funny, the comedy that stands out for this year is Back to the Future. Starring the highly popular Michael J. Fox of Family Ties fame, the story was about a guy who goes back in time where he meets his parents (as kids). It also starred Christopher Lloyd as the scientist who creates the time machine which caused the entire mishap. This film turned out to be one of the funniest films ever made. With its quick-witted, inter-generational jokes, it will always stand out in our minds. One of the most popular, if not the most popular, movies of the year was Rambo: First Blood Part II. If anything, it was one of the most violent. This movie portrayed Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo, a specially trained commando on a mission to rescue American soldiers missing in action in Vietnam. The movie, even with it reputation for being violent made more money than most, if not all. films of 1985-86. The film was criticized for being strongly anti-Communistic, a trait that most audiences loved. Stallone strengthened his anti-Communistic theme in Rocky IV in which he por- trayed an American boxer who fought a Russian giant for the world title. Just as did Rambo, Rocky won — both on the screen and in the box office. The films nominated this year for academy awards were varied in style, type, and overall production, thus making the competitors refreshingly individual and certainly deserving of the awards for which they were nominated. In the running this year were such films as Prizzi’s Honor, The Color Purple, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Out of Africa. Although they are, by no means, as popular as the movies mentioned before, they are recog- nized as being of the highest caliber in the film industry. Prizzi's Honor is a black comedy about an intense relationship between a mafia hitman and a mafia hitwoman. The Color Purple is a drama, notably Steven Speilberg's first such film, about a black woman in the early 20th century and the hardships she has to endure. The Kiss of the Spiderwoman tells about the relationship that developes between a homosexual and a political prisoner. Finally, Out of Africa is a visually beautiful film about a woman who makes her home in Africa and faces a dilemma concerning whom she loves. No matter which film, all of these deserve recognition for being best. Even though some other films never become nominees of super box office smashes , there are those that were good and therefore should be re- membered. The Purple Rose of Cairo, which did receive a lesser nomination, was Woody Allen's contribution to this year. St. Elmo's Fire became popular because of the many young, talented stars, including three from The Breakfast Club. White Nights contained some beautiful dancing scenes with Makhail Boryshnikov and Gregory Hines .Jewel of the Nile turned out to be an exciting and hilarious sequel to the popular Romancing the Stone. All in all, despite comparitively superior years, 1985-86 did have its high points and its films will forever live in our memories, and quite possibly (and probably) on the screen. — Miguel Cima It seemed like only yesterday. The stadiums were packed with fans screaming for their favorite teams. We can all agree that the 1985 baseball season will be one to remember. No one could foresee the records that would be broken, the managers who would be changed, and the young new stars that would arise. Among the images we will remember will be the Kansas City Royals beating the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh game of the World Series. It will be remembered as the 1-70 series. Bret Saberhagen (pictured) was named the most valuable player as well as being awarded the Cy Young. One thing we cannot forget was Pete Rose’s swing that broke Ty Cobb’s all-time hit record. Pete Rose, player manager of the Cinncinatti Reds surpassed Cobb’s record of 4,192 hits in a career this September. Football could not be left out of our memories in the sports world. Here in N.Y., we watched both the Jets and Giants make the playoffs. In the back of our minds, we remember the outstanding record of the Chicago Bears. The word Refrigerator” would become a national pride for Chicago. The Bears, led by the outlandish quarterback Jim McMahon and running back Walter Payton would become world champions. They defeated the New England Patriots in the Superbowl by a score of 44-10. Conversation of football this season would not be complete without mention to our own illustrious team. The Mepham Pirates Finished the season second in the county to a tough Garden City. Although, not on the professional level, the Pirates overall victori- ous season will not soon be forgotten. In basketball the Celtics and the Lakers are again expected to continue their tradition of excellence. As well, the Edmonton Oilers are favored to repeat their victorious season as NHL Stanley Cup Champs. One of the low points in sports this year was the numerous drug scandals. Because of the problems, Fines, suspensions, and even expulsions were executed in many sports. The largest of the drug problems was baseball’s Pittsburgh drug trials involving dealer Curtis Strong. Many stars throughout baseball, including Yankee Dale Berra and Met Keith Hernandez were indicted. Harsh penalties were leved on all involved. The most sever penalty involving drugs in sports was given to NBA star Michael Ray Richardson. Richardson of the Nets was suspended indefinitely after three trips in and out of rehabilitation centers. We hope that this will not mar the good name of sports and wish that the whole ordeal will soon be eliminated. _ , _ — hd Cortina — Ken Rauschenbach SPORTS spectacular 181 Sponsors 182 TREASURE CHEST TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 183 CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 1986 SpUT Bedford Stationary Complete Office and School Supplies Free Delivery With Minimum Blumberg Legal Supplies •Accounting Bookkeeping Supplies -rubber stamps -school supplies •one write check systems -office machines equipment -ribbons ink rollers WEINMAN'S HARDWARE 106 Bedford Ave. Beilmore, N.Y. 11710 505-0222 221-2234 For all your Sporting needs 2776 Sunrise Highway Beilmore 207 N. It is at this tune that at must sav good-bye. For the post three years «e. the graduating dass, hare be- come one. Together are endured the 'abuse' as freshman, the 'middie-child syn- drome' as lurtMMS and now the disease of 'sensors '. Looking back c is easy to rec- ognise us as distmetiy ouraefses. Pirate teammates congratulate each other for a great victory. More congratulations later in the season as the Pirates placed second in their conference. Elise Gerber and Dianne Degree take time out from their artwork to show us exactly what friends are for. Theme TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE 205 TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE While Wellington C. Mepham High School has harbored us for these past three years, it is not really the school building itself that we will regret leaving upon our graduation. When we depart for the last time from the steel doors of Me- pham High School, we shall be sad to know that our laughter, our tears and our shouts of joy will no longer fill the corri- dors. In the years to come we will wistfully reflect on our high school careers, remem- bering the special faculty, the cherished friendships, and the memorable events. As we say good-bye to our alma mata, we must realize that our presences shall al- ways linger on because we were certainly ... a difference to treasure. Show us those luscious legs must have been the request as Jon Winstein (above) Kathy Lyden, Mike Krebs and Lauren Haltigen seem more than happy to oblige. Onlookers arc Bobby Salderelli (above) and Carol Zamocjin, Kelly Penny and William Solomon. Gsoing 206 ----------------- TREASURE CHEST Kristine Sbarra caught in the act of getting ready to leave school during her lunch period — probably a welcome escape. Rob Fegan and Jennifer Campanile to- gether has become a familiar sight at Mepham. Making a mountain out of a molehill — maybe, but one out of chairs and junk food just doesn’t seem possible. Can Scott Perry. Larry Brady. Thomas Maca- luso and Santy Galone show us how? Theme -------------------------- 207 TREASURE THE DIFFERENCE
