Berwind Miss Agnes Berwind has watched and contributed to the growth of Central High School 3, from its original six room school house to the vast system of four junior and three senior high schools it is today. One of the five members of the first Mepham faculty, she has remained a loved and respected teacher and administrator. When the school moved into its present building, Miss Berwind became Chairman of the Social Studies Department. Her capable administration led to her appointment as Director of Instruction and Curriculum; and, in 1965, as Administrative Assistant. Throughout her many years of sendee to benefit the district, Miss Benvind has exuded a warmth and understanding that has helped to unify the expanding system. With her helpfulness, encouragement, and inspiration, she has endeared herself to the administration and the teachers, proving herself essential in their work. She has always been ready to solve, wisely, the problems of other people, to offer sound advice and common sense. The students are grateful for her intense loyalty to, and love of, Central High School District 3, for she has dedicated her life to them. So, with this in mind we, the students of W.C. Mepham High School, dedicate this, our 1966 Treasure Chest to you, Miss Agnes Berwind. 4 11 Football Queen, Felice Mancini, leads Mepham’s March on Calhoun I •rs . B O 21 23 It! MR. RAYMOND D. HANSEN The youth of our Central High School District No. 3 school community have lost a staunch supporter in the sudden passing of Raymond D. Hansen, a member of the Board of Education. He was always interested in them—their work, their problems and their progress. Our school community is indebted to the efforts of this dedicated layman. He had concern for the individual as well as for broad long range policies in education. His thinking and efforts helped form the sound foundation for our secondary schools during their period of rapid growth. All with whom he came in contact respected his courage and his convictions. Mr. Hansen served with distinction on the high school Board of Education continuously from 1954-55 to 1960-61. He served as President of the Board of Education during the 1959-60 school year. In July 1965, he again returned to serve on the Central High School Board of Education. We, the students and faculty, acknowledge with grateful appreciation his service to education. SEATED: Mr. John J. Martin, Vice President, Mr. Eugene E. Adam, President, Miss Katherine E. Reif. STANDING: Mr. William A. Klare, Mr. John E. Boh- lander, Mr. Raymond D. Hansen, Mr. Harry S. Campbell, Mr. Charles A. Rcinhard, Dr. Julius C. Braun, Principal of the District. Board of Education Many times students take things related to the organization of their schools for granted. Actually, behind the effective functioning of our schools is a group of dedicated lay citizens whose interest and purpose is to provide the best possible educational program for the school community. This group is our Board of Education, which is responsible for setting up educational policy for our schools. In Central High School District No. 3, its services include the secondary education programs for 9300 students in the communities of Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore, and North Merrick. These areas include the following schools: Brookside Junior High School: Grand Avenue Junior High School: Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School: Merrick Avenue Junior High School; Calhoun High School; Mepham High School; and our new John F. Kennedy High School. The responsibilities of the Board of Education are many. It sets the policies which develop into the educational programs and opportunities for each student in terms of his needs, .interests, and abilities. These policies are implemented into action through the executive officer, the Principal of the District, the building principals, and the teaching staff. This involves the providing of a program of studies, materials of instruction, the professional and non-professional staff, the construction and maintenance of buildings, the co-curricular program, the financing of the total educational operation by means of an annual school budget, transportation, school business management, and many other related functions. Our Board of Education, through its forward-looking approach to the needs and problems of our schools, deserves our heartfelt appreciation for its time, effort, and interest spent in planning and providing an outstanding all-around educational opportunity for each of us. Mr. Bernard Morris, Counsel, Mr. John F. Mahon, Treasurer, Mrs. Ruth D. Hamilton, Clerk. 26 Dr. Julius C. Braun Principal of the District My dear Mepham Seniors; My greetings to each of you as you near the close of your high school years. As you reminisce in future years, you will realize more than you do now the importance and value of those formative years. The learning processes of the last three years have given you the essential skills and attitudes for making an effective adjustment to the changing mature life in the years ahead. Your many and varied opportunities here at Mepham High School have given you the experiences and character necessary to develop into young adulthood in the finest American tradition. Your teachers, under the able leadership of Mr. Tennant, Mr. Tarbell, and Mr. Rutley, deserve your appreciation for their interest and assistance in your educational progress. Take pride in your school and what it has done for you. Your school takes pride in what you have done and in your potential for future accomplishment. My appreciation goes to you for the many contributions in effort and service that you have made for the betterment of your school. He has worked to build the school’s fine reputation and to improve each of its several phases, involving himself deeply in the activities and endeavors of students, and exhibiting an intense interest in their future. He is proud of the part that the high school plays in education and in the maturation of young people. Mr. Tennant graduated from Hobart College with a Bachelor’s Degree, and from New York University with a Master’s. DiTeodoro Senior Class Advisor With the able assistance of a Senior Advisor, the success of the Senior Class activities is assured. Mr. Vincent A. DiTeodoro is a truly fine advisor. Under his supervision the Senior Planning Committee and Senior Sales operated smoothly and efficiently. The success of the Sophomore Dance, the magazine sale, the Harvest Moon Ball, the Junior Prom, Senior-Junior Night, and the Senior Prom show Mr. DiTeodoro’s interest in the students. He can usually be seen running through the halls delivering senior mascots, pacing nervously waiting for people to decorate the gymnasium for a dance, or stopping for a moment to give information to members of the newspaper staff. It is to this man, affectionately known as “Mr. D,” that the Senior Class of 1966 expresses its admiration and gratitude. 46 Allen Schwalb, President William Hutchinson, Vice President Senior Officers In any democratically run organization, there exists an elected group whose job it is to supervise the activities sponsored by the organization. Mepham’s Senior Class of 1966 used excellent judgment in the selection of its four officers: Allen Schwalb, William Hutchinson, Linda Walsh, and Diane Thomas. They exhibited leadership and responsibility in the fulfillment of their duties. They worked together as a well-organized unit in coordinating the activities of the Senior Planning Committee and in raising the spirit of the entire student body. Besides the highly successful Senior Prom, they supervised many of the traditional school activities, such as the Senior Play, the Harvest Moon Ball, the Sadie Hawkins Dance, and Senior-Junior Night. Led by Class President Allen Schwalb, the organization achieved a fine record of accomplishments. The scenery for the Harvest Moon Ball, the excitement of Senior-Junior Night, and the beautiful transformation of the gymnasium for the Senior Prom can be credited to the enthusiasm and diligence of this group. We also praise them for the neighborhood’s response to Santa Claus and his elves in Bellmore on December 18 and 19 of 1965. Their willingness to devote time and effort to the various activities was admirable. It was because of this group that the Mepham High School Class of 1966 was a successful and spirited one. 48 STANDING: M. Goss. L. Zwclling. C. Haring. ROW 1: E. Ratiner, A. Goldreyer, D. Kuttin. B. Senior Sales The financial organ of the Class of 1966 was the Senior Sales Committee, which worked enthusiastically all year to accumulate the funds necessary for the functioning of class projects. Led by chairman Leonard Zwelling and working closely and consistently with Mr. DiTeodoro, the members of the large organization sold refreshments and programs prepared by Peggy Goss at home athletic events; and banners, buttons, and the cherished beanies were available for purchase by seniors as items to demonstrate school spirit and as momentoes of the final year at Mepham. The Magazine Sale, managed by Cheri Haring, was a prosperous and important project, both for the profits and for the vitality it brought to the entire class. The sale surpassed substantially its monetary' goal and created unity in each homeroom. The committee, both independently and in conjunction with Senior Planning, w'orked and provided for the success of the class. Band The Mepham High School Band again proved its excellence throughout the year in its diversified concert and marching programs. The great spirit reached its peak during the football season with the very successful March on Calhoun led by Drum Major Bill Hutchinson. Mepham’s Winter and Spring Concerts, as well as the exchange concerts with other schools, brought more glory to the organization. Band Captain Carl DeCicco, Band Manager Ken Marblestonc, and Band Secretary Joyce Leon did a fine job in organizing the band. The success of the Mepham Band is due to its directors, Mr. Schoales and Mr. Goldberg, who have given the band a well balanced diet of music and fine musical instruction. This diet included a large array of classical, contemporary, and avant garde music. The directors’ conducting has drawn the best from each student, and has made the Mepham Band one of the finest in New York State. 134 Joyce Leon, Secretary; Ken Marblcstonc, Manager; William Hutchinson, Drum Major; Carl DeCicco, Band Captain. A Cappella Choir The A Cappella Choir, steeped in a rich tradition, enjoyed another year of spirited and excellent performances of difficult music. The members, among them the best voices in the school, rehearsed many hours throughout the year to uphold the fine reputation that the Choir, with its conductor, Mr. H. Walton Alderfer, has earned in years of vocal representation at Mepham. In presenting nearly twenty-five programs, the Choir traveled to other schools and to the meeting places of several clubs and organizations, including the Freeport Elks Club for a memorial service. The group entered state competition and auditioned for the Gold Medallion contest at New York’s Town Hall. At Mepham, the annual Christmas Concert drew overflow audiences, and programs with the band and with the Seaford High School Choir were also successful. Mr. Jacob Gunther, the godfather of A Cappella members, made last year’s spring trip to South Royalton, Vermont possible, and extended again his wonderful warmth and kindness. H. Walton Alderfer, and the Repertory Band, under the direction of Mr. Leonard Goldberg, play an integral part in Mepham’s musical program. The first public performance for the combined choruses was the Christmas Concert. Each chorus rendered songs portraying different aspects of the winter season, and then merged with the A Cappclla Choir for a stirring two hundred and fifty voice finale. In June, the Repertory Band and the three choruses presented the Musicale, an open-air concert which has already become a school tradition. Mr. John Coby, the advisor, and President Bruce Weniger directed the club as it followed an active schedule of worthwhile projects and activities. In recognition of the United Nations Human Rights Day, December 10, the club sponsored a meeting of the three Mepham service groups with the chairmen of the Merrick-Bellmore Committee for Human Rights. Carlo Cristofori, Herald Tribune World Youth Forum delegate from Italy, addressed another joint meeting called by Key Club. Members published the Sophomore and Senior guides, policed the March to Calhoun, and aided the administration at dances, games, and several other events. The boys helped at the Home for Retarded Children Benefit, hosted the yearly Christmas party for the children at the Cerebral Palsy Center of Nassau County in Roosevelt, and adopted a child in Ecuador. The club initiated an important program that promised to become a tradition in College Night. Alumni from many colleges, schools, and organizations offered information and answered questions for the hundreds of interested parents and students who attended. Key Club SEATED: R. Nidi, M. American Field Service Club The American Field Service Club, an extension of the Bellmore-Merrick chapter of A.F.S., was organized this year in Mepham by Bill Endclman, 1965 Summer Program student in France, at the suggestion of the local office. While helping to promote world understanding, the club brought information concerning foreign exchange programs to the school. Among its more important functions was the welcoming of visiting foreign exchange students. In this capacity it hosted a weekend in February, when A.F.S. students visited Mepham. It also greeted Carlo Cristofori, Herald Tribune World Youth Forum representative. At regular meetings the fifty members viewed films and carried on discussions. Miss Galbraith was the club’s sponsor; and Marianne Dethier, Mepharn’s A.F.S. student from Belgium, was the president. 153 Librarians, Miss Wilma M. Cope and Mrs. Mildred E. Klips The Library Club, the oldest organization in the school, began in 1937 under librarian Doris E. Moyle with an enrollment of ten girls. This year the 36 diligent members continued to do the clerical work of the library, allowing the librarians to devote their attention to improving the library and aiding the students and teachers. The girls were responsible for the lending and borrowing of books, the care of the books and magazine room, the managing of the desk, and filing. Inductions were held in the spring, when several sophomore girls gained acceptance after a six-week apprenticeship period, the passing of a written exam, and the evaluation of the old members and the librarians. Junior girls whose work was satisfactory earned keys, and seniors received letters with the successful completion of a project vital to the library. The club contributed to UNICEF, sent books to migratory workers, sponsored an exhibit for the National Education Week and a tea for the Herald Tribune exchange student from Italy, and held a tea each month of the year. For their annual trip, the members went to a Broadway show. Library Club Seated: 1st ROW: A. Peltz, K. Marks, S. Horowitz, P. Gilchrist (president). 2nd ROW: S. Kunitz, D. Barr, L. Flamm, M. Members of the group ushered at the district teachers’ conference last fall, sponsored a tea for Teacher Recognition Day, and an exhibit during National Education Week. Aside from these activities other special programs were available to members. Films were shown and speakers lectured on different phases of teaching, including working with handicapped children. In the spring, senior members of F.T.A. taught for a day in the district, under the teachers of their choice. Each member, in order to retain membership, had to work seven hours each semester by helping a teacher with clerical chores. This freed the teacher for more important work and gave each member invaluable experience for her future role as an educator. 155 ROW I: C. Bezak. B. Clarin, L. Schichalew, R. Zaun, E. Sussman, P. Junior Planning Committee Elected by the junior homerooms and led by senior class advisor Mr. Di-Teodoro, the representatives to the Junior Planning Committee had their first experience in governing and working for their class organization. Paul Miller served as chairman and Janet Hiscox as recording secretary. The group was responsible for planning the Junior Prom, and, in conjunction with the seniors, for Senior-Junior Night. ‘‘Paris in the Spring” was the theme of the highly successful prom. The committees formed were: the Publicity Committee, which took charge of announcements and bulletins; the Decorations Committee, which built an EifTcl Tower, and fashioned murals, poems, and center pieces; the Arrangement Committee, which organized the court and the flower arrangements; and the Food Committee, which provided refreshments. 156 Herald Tribune World Youth Forum This year, as part of the New York Herald Tribune World Youth Forum, which brings students from some eighty-five countries to the Metropolitan Area. Mepham was privileged to host a visitor. For three weeks in January Carlo Cristofori, a 17 year old secondary school student from Italy, stayed with the Bruce Wcniger family. While at Mepham, he attended various social studies classes and after school club meetings discussing modern day Europe and Italy, world problems, and answering various types of questions that ranged from opinions on Charles de Gaulle to recipes for spaghetti sauce. His personality and friendliness soon made him many friends and it was not uncommon for him to say hello to a face in the hall he had seen in a social studies class previously. He attended two courses regularly: Mrs. Day’s American Literature class and Mr. Rapport’s American History class. His intelligence and sense of humor made his presence in both those classes enjoyable and stimulating. Carlo attended schools on Staten Island and in Yonkers, and travelled on two field trips to New England and to the Washington, D.C. area. As the Italian delegate to the World Youth Forum he appeared on television before flying back to his home in Genoa, a famous seaport in Italy's industrial North. Carlo Cristofori Future Nurses Club The F.N.C. provided preparation for the careers of Mepham girls interested in studying the nursing profession. During study halls, the members helped their advisor. Miss Shelton, in the health office, and many worked as volunteers at local hospitals, nursing homes, and community centers. The club held a tea in February for the nursing clubs from Baldwin, East Meadow, and Calhoun high schools. Mepham alumnae who attend different nursing schools spoke on the several types of educational programs. In the spring, the members planned a mother-daughter dinner with guest speakers, and made a trip to Bellevue Hospital. A service project was the sealing of envelopes for the Tuberculosis and Health Association. FRONT SITTING: A. Jacobson, E. Hoffman, Sec. A. Mascola, Pres. N. Antonins, V.P. C. Bennett, Trcas. J. Philosophy Club The Philosophy Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Day, is a group whose members discuss both moral and practical problems from a philosophical viewpoint. Freely exchanging their ideas, this year’s members researched the theories of different philosophers and explained them at the bimonthly meetings. They related the great thinkers of the past to modern philosophers and attempted to draw and form their own opinions. The Debate Club, under the leadership of Mr. McQuillan, has had a victorious year. As a member of the L.I. Forensic Association it participated in student congresses, speech contests, and debates with other schools on national topics. The debaters carried over from last year the practice of interschool debates including the annual trip to Xavier. This year the season ended with a grand tournament between Mepham and Calhoun, with the victor receiving a huge trophy. President—Gary Witlen, Vice-President—B o b Schwartz. The promotion of understanding the responsibilities of citizenship was its main purpose this year. One of DECA’s activities was an annual national contest which included entries in job application, display, advertising, merchandise math, and public speaking. The Forum The Forum Club, founded last year by Russell Nieli and Bruce Weniger, was designed to promote student participation in discussion of pressing domestic problems. New and changing political trends were the primary concerns of its members. During the year, representatives from various political organizations acted as guest speakers; the War on Poverty, Medicare, and civil rights were topics which provoked interesting and stimulating discussions. Junior Classical League An official chapter of the nation-wide organization, the Junior Classical League was a group which met to gain knowledge of classical civilization and to understand its influence on government, laws, literature, and language. Members, who were not necessarily Latin students, learned much of the rich heritage and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The Roman Banquet was held on February' 9. Members, dressed in togas and wreaths of laurels, enjoyed a dinner and entertainment. The club ended the year’s activities with a trip to see a Greek drama. In its second year at Mepham, the French Club attempted to acquaint students with French culture. Under the direction of Miss Galbraith, the French students engaged in activities which helped them to understand and appreciate France and her language. Among these activities were several trips to New York City. Club members viewed “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” and Moliere’s “The Miser,” dining in a French restaurant each time. They, themselves, performed the play, “La Maitre.” They also co-sponsored with the Latin and Library Clubs a very enjoyable tea for Carlo Cristo-fori. Herald Tribune exchange student. The Pep Club, whose advisor was Miss Runkle, spent much time in activating interest in athletic and other school functions. Its spirited work was important to the success of the March on Calhoun. Brightening portions of the corridors with posters, members conducted several campaigns to advertise major events and to increase student awareness of them. Membership was open only to underclassmen, sophomores and juniors not permitted to join the Senior Sales Committee, who wished to participate actively in Mepham activities. Pep Club Chess Club The Chess Club joined the Long Island Chess League, which includes the clubs of twenty schools in Nassau County. The members met once a week in a quiet classroom to concentrate on the difficult and intensive game. Skiing sites included Bellayre, Hunter, and Davos, where both the expert and amatuer skiers tested and improved their skills. Ski Club Art Club The Art Club stimulated appreciation and understanding of creative works of the student body. Thirty enthusiastic young artists, advised by Mr. Mesoligetes and Mr. Gage, met weekly to engage in analysis of elements of fine paintings, in sketching and study sessions of anatomical subjects, and in criticizing the members’ works. Such emotional scenes occurred frequently after Castro announced his “open door” policy, allowing certain groups of Cubans to leave his dictatorship. 2 Pioneer in Space — Astronaut Edward White stepped from his Gemini IV space capsule and into the void of space last June. Maj. James McDivitt, his companion on a 3Vi -day orbital flight, had to coax White back into the capsule after he had traveled 20 minutes suspended from Gemini IV. Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad were the next space twins to orbit the earth. They completed their 8-clay flight in Gemini V during August. 3 Medicare Pill Signed President Johnson signed the Medicare Bill into law July 30 with former President Truman at his side. Witnessing the event that had far-reaching effects on Social Security benefits for the elderly were (left to right) Lady Bird Johnson, Vice President Humphrey and Bess Truman. The ceremony was held in Truman Library in Independence, Mo. 4 Temporary Mood— Dodgers Manager Walter Alston's mood of dejection after the Minnesota Twins won the sixth World Series game did not last long. The Dodgers emerged victorious in the 7th game and captured the pennant. 5 Double Space Spectacular Astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford got this view of the Gemini 7 spaceship December 15 while traveling in their Gemini 6 craft for their historic rendezvous adventure. Schirra and Stafford rode their red-hot craft back to earth the following day, but Gemini 7 completed a 14-day mission before its re-entry. Making the longest and most significant voyage in space in Gemini 7 were Frank Borman and James Lovell, Jr. 6 Plea for Peace—Pope Paul VI stood before the United Nations General Assembly in New York on October 4 to deliver his plea for world peace. His unprecedented, one-day visit in the U.S. was the culmination of plans by men of all faiths. 7 After Surgery—President Johnson was photographed in a reclining chair at Bcthesda Naval Hospital the day after his gall bladder operation on October 8. He conducted the work of his office from his hospital room and his Texas ranch during his recuperation. 8 Proud Student—Charles Craig, 19-year-old freshman at Iowa university, demonstrated his criticism of draft-card burning incidents by displaying his draft card on his jacket with the note: “I’m a draft card carrying American and proud of it. Our role in the Vietnamese war sparked the incidents. 9 Blackout The glittering metropolis of New York City was thrust into darkness on November 9 by a massive power failure affecting hundreds of miles along the eastern seaboard. City residents and commuters were stranded in offices, railroad and subway stations for hours before service was restored. The crippling condition was caused by a faulty relay at a Canadian generating station near Niagara Falls. 10 New Ambassador—Arthur Goldberg was named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by the President after the death of Ambassador Adlai Stevenson on July 14 in London. Goldberg was secretary of labor under President Kennedy and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice when named to the U.N. post. 11 Startling Fashions—Bold and contrasting blocks of color were the youthful fashion note of 1965. The eye-catching designs even extended the length of campus stockings worn w ith the costumes. 12 Royalty on Tour— Princess Margaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon, arrived in New York on November 4 for a whirlwind tour of the U.S. During their visit, they took time out for fun-filled activities such as a ride on a cable car in Frisco and gala parties in Hollywood and the nation’s capital. The varsity football team, for the second year under the direction of Coach Gerald Reisberg, finished the 1965 season in the South Shore’s tough Division One with a league record of 2—5. Although the worth of any team is based on the coordinated performances of every player, consistent noteworthy individual performances merit attention. Ably filling that most critical quarterback position was junior Val MartinofT, who was backed up by Buddy Martin. Also in the backfield, leading yardage gainers were Barry Nemiroff, Jody Proce, Bob Paz, Paul Alonge, and Alan Barocas. Quick-running ends Dan Kerrigan and Tom Barnard made it possible for quarterback MartinofT to successfully resort to the air many times. Inspiring the line with their tremendous performances on both offense and defense were Philip Grebinar and Tom Kizis. After dropping the season opener to a perennially strong Berner H.S squad, the football team came through with two commendable league victories over Sewanhaka High School (7—0) and Valley Stream Central High School (17—6) to put us into a tie-for first place in the league. This period on top did not last long as we began to meet the stronger teams of the division. After dropping one at the hands of the Baldwin High School squad, we fell to a 21—0 defeat by the renowned Jets of East Meadow High. The remainder of the season included losses to Oceanside High, county champion Massapequa High, and finally to the squad from arch-rival Calhoun High School. 170 Football Nemiroff (23) grabs the ball . . . . . . and runs for a touchdown against Calhoun. 171 ROW 1: S. Grapplers in Action 172 Wrestling Mepham High School, whose name is known throughout the field of high school wrestling and is synonymous with traditional excellence, ranks highly when referring to its wrestling team founded by the legendary Frank “Sprig” Gardner and maintained each year by Coach Ken Hunte. Although this years record was marred by a single loss to rival Calhoun in one of the closest and most highly contested matches in Nassua wrestling history, the Mepham squad succeeded in bouncing back the following week to win the South Shore Tournament on the way to the all important Nassau County Championships. Wrestling is one of several sports in which the individual counts the most. Successfully holding down the lower weights were seniors Bill Munno, Mike Atwell, Jim Nanos, Peter Fischer, Mike Cafiero, and junior Alan Stock. Competing successfully in the middle weights were seniors Marty Langen, Frank Mus-cara, Gary Weddle, juniors Jim Samler, Gary Nussbaum, Jim Dameron, and sophomore A1 Peterman. In the upper weights were such individuals as Philip Grebinar, A1 True, Gerald Hagin, Tom Kizis, and Bob Paz. The varsity basketball team, under the coaching of Mr. Douglas Gerek, was well under way toward a highly successful season with a very good chance for placing in the county tournament when this portion of the Treasure Chest went to press. A highlight of the season was winning the Calhoun Holiday Festival championship trophy when the Mepham squad defeated Mineola High School with a score of 81—51, and then topped Floral Park High School with a score of 68—62. This year’s squad centered around junior Mike Salvatore, who led the team in scoring and rebounding. Mike, who broke the record for single game scoring by shooting 35 points, should be the mainstay for next year’s squad. In the backcourt this year were captain Jim Nealy, who coordinated the team’s plays with his excellent court leadership, and Shelly Gooler, an all-around player. In the forecourt, sophomore Ira Goodelman showed future star quality of the Mepham five with his excellent shooting. Date Simon, Steve Armson, and Steve Goldner supplied more underclassmen shooting and rebounding support for the squad. Basketball 174 Robert Lapidus sinks a foul shot against the Chiefs. Mepham gets the ball. Mike Salvatore (42) taps it in. A touch shot by Mike Salvatore (42). The 1965-1966 school year marked the first entry of Mephain High into interscholastic soccer on the varsity level. The team finished the season with a record of 3—6—1, Coach Ken Hunte’s squad of eleven hooters succeeded in making a worthwhile entry into South Shore soccer. This year’s defense was better than the offense in all-around effectiveness. Led by goalie Jim Nealy, and backs Tony Marbois, Jim Nanos, Tom McCall, and Les Feldman, the team was often able to stop their opponents forward thrust. The scoring punch was provided by other booters such as Mike Atwell, Dave Glassman, Frank Muscara, and Ed Kravancy. Sophomores contributing to the varsity team effort were Greg Loos, Billy Seader, Gaiy Halperin, and Louis Marsico. The junior varsity team had more success with a 7—1 record which put them in first place in the section and furthered hopes for a more powerful varsity squad in the years to come. ROW 1: L. Many of last year’s cindermen have returned this year, in what promises to be one of Mepham’s most productive seasons in recent years. Bill Matthews, Mike Franzino, and Danny Kerrigan, all of whom reached the South Shore Athletic League finals last year, are back again, along with many others. Tom Barnard or Dave Krinsky will probably run the 100-yard dash. Either Ray Jordan or Neil Long will run the mile. Norm Friedman and Bruce Schwaidelson are perhaps the most likely candidates for the hurdles. In addition, many of the boys from the winter track team, such as A1 Brunetti, Bob Wallace, and Greg Kash are all top contenders for first-string positions. This year, the team is once again under Coach Gerald Risberg’s able leadership, in one of the toughest leagues on Long Island. Indoor Track Indoor Track, under Mr. Hawthorne, initiated as a conditioning program, became a varsity sport with regular meets and letters. The outstanding record of four wins, no losses, and one tie included victories over Calhoun, Elmont, North Shore, and Berner. The team utilized the facilities at Nassau Community College for championship meets. There were ten events in competition contests. Bill Matthews set school records in hurdles and high jump. Specializing in running were: Tom Barnard, with the sixty-yard dash; Bruce Schwaidelson, with the three-hundred yard run; Dave Krinsky, with the six-hundred; Bob Wallace, with the thousand; Bob Oates, with the mile; and Neil Long, with the two mile. A1 Burnctti threw the shot-put. Baseball The Mcpham baseball team moved back this year to a more difficult league, Section 1, in which it hopes to compile a successful record during the spring season. Leading the squad are: pitchers Buddy Martin, Alan True, and Roger Schleuter; returning catcher Bruce Clarin; infielders Bill Kelly and Joe Ficco; and ClifF Voege and Ritchie Cohen in the outfield. Guided by Coach Gerek, the players should provide strong competition for the sectional championship. KNEELING: P. Alonge, C. Voege. R. Schleuter, B. Clarin, A. True. W. Kelly, J. Ficco. R. Martin. ROW 2: A. Kondoleon, R. Lapidus, J. DeStifano, R. Stein, P. Jantz, V. Martinoff, R. Cohen, S. George, VV. Hcitner, R. Phillips, L. Schneider. INDOOR TRACK—ROW I: R. Seiler, M. Katzenstein, B. Captain Fred Bisen, at first singles, showed great skill in playing for a 10—4 season. At second doubles were Lenny Zwelling and Harold Wilner, who compiled a fine 11—3 record. Other singles players were Ken Grossman and Richie Schop. Returning next year with high potential for the squad are Richie Seadcr, Ken Grossman, Richard Diamond, Rich Trachtenberg, and Hal Rosenthal. The cross country team had the best season in its history, with nine victories and three losses. In the S.S.A.L. meets at Salisbury Park, the team placed fourth out of thirteen schools in competition. Neil Long, consistently the top runner, will return next year with Ed Hoeljer and Dave Carter. The anchorman, Vincent Franco, was one of the five best players in the league and bowled with the highest average on the team. Seniors Dennis White, Ed Wicker, and Jack Cennamo were reliable regular starters. Showing good promise for next year are Bill Collins, who had the best series score; Larry Schneider, who rolled the high game; Gerry Gilbert; and Vincent Franco. The Rifle Team, under the advisorship of Mr. Felske, had a successful year, winning more than half of its games and beating Calhoun’s squad. The top scorers were Russ Nieli, Ricky Phillips, and Ken Reilly. Mr. Weaver organized the team in 1939, and it has grown strong with the help of Mr. Cadro and Mr. Walters, and with the supervision of Mr. Felske. Preserved in this book, the happy experiences of three years earn a special place in our minds. Glancing through these pages, we revive memories that will not dim. What was once only momentous is now meaningful, a significance that deepens as our youth turns to age. 189 ADVERTISEMENTS W.
