Every student has his or her own personality, but what makes memories is the combination of each individual. This year your memories won't be lost. For with pictures and words we will show you how M.H.S. students are not only committed to academic excellence and stepping up in the world, but they are also dedicated to stepping out and having fun. This yearbook will try to capture the memories without missing a step!! 3 Top Center: Homecoming Court members huddle together during the game. Go Cards! With such a large student body instructors are provided with a very challenging environment. 9 MEMORIES ARE FOUND IN THE LITTLE THINGS . . . e found memories we can treasure in our classroom activities, in the cafeteria, and on the playing fields. Wherever we go from here, there will be more happy memories, for we will develop the joy experienced in our high school days and use it to further enrich our lives. Top: Talking about daises . . . Middle Left: Helpful teachers . . . Middle Right: Just tooting your hom . . Bottom: Studying fine arts . . . 10 Seniors, this was our year!! We've had Pumpkin Babies thanks to Diane Mastrobuono and Linda Ratino. (Top Left). Events like Homecoming made lifetime friends; just look at Susie Snyder and Beth Pohto, members of 1986-87 Homecoming Court. (Middle Right). The Senior Citizens dance was a huge success; can’t you tell by the smiling faces of Mindy Hudak, Lyle Pepin and friends? (Bottom Right). Physics Concepts classes performed various experiments throughout the year; seniors (Bottom Left) help do it right. And Anally, the one place that we called our own, the place where we met our friends, talked about the weekend and ate lunch: Senior Court. One happy group was delighted to pose for a quick shot. (Middle Left). X These first few pages, while being for the entire school, are dedicated to the Senior Class of 1987. In March the ream will travel to Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland for the state competition. This may lead to a trip to Texas in April for the national competition. Supporting the team are fifteen teachers, each representing a specific category of com -petition. Mr. Allen and Mr. Glaros. the team s advisors, are working diligently at instructing the students. We wish the best of luck to the Academic Decathlon Team of 1987. These selections were chosen as the best examples of writing submitted to the club. These works can be found in their entirety in the 1986-87 edition of the MHS literary magazine. Cardinal Reflections. Congratulations to the following: Category: Poetry Winning selection: Light. Time, Space by Josh Freshwater Excerpt: Light. Time, and Space are tangled twine. They are no one's. Not yours, not mine. Time is abstract in many ways. But marked by us in hours and days. Light is life and all that's good. Brights hope and warmth as goodness should Space is void, dark and mystery Stands for alone, sad and dreary ... CONTEST WINNERS 1986-87 Second place: Sunrise by Maria Hauser Third place: Class Ring anonymous Excerpt: Inky blackness is dotted by distant diamond chips as a single star sends shimmering rays upon placid mirror-like lake. Yellow weed stalks and tiger tails all stand erect as they guard their circular wonder and quench their parched roots, Young water lillies with cream colored petals and silky leaves protect slumbering toads, while at the same rime provide stages for performing crickets Excerpt: Close by the doorway He pauses to stand As he took the Class Ring from her hand. All who were watching Did not speak. As a silent tear ran Down his cheek. And in his mind The memories ran. At the moments they laughed In the sun and sand. But now her eyes are very cold He will never again Have her hand to hold ... 110 Category: Short Story Winning selection: Diary of a Semi Perfect Murder in Mayfield by Walter Rankin Excerpt: ' Mom. Em home! shouted Wally, as he slammed the kitchen door behind him. Now. dear, didn t your father tell you not to slam that d x)r when you come in? askedJune. Gee. Em sorry. Mom! Oh. that's okay. dear. Here, have a ctxfkie—they're fresh. Thanks, mom. Can I have some milk too? May I. she corrected thoughtfully, and of course, dear. She paused. Dear. Em afraid have some good news and some bad news: the good news is that Eddie Haskell is dead and the bad news is that we re all suspects in his murder Hey. neat! came from behind. Beaver had entered. Was there blood, guts, gee ...” Second place: 'Justice? ” by Chris Jelen Excerpt: ”... The feeling that I had earlier returned but I didn't notice it until I was engulfed in the Other's will. Now I ran faster and saw the figure again, this time closer. I began to feel stifled in the Other. The Other felt anger toward this unknown person who dared to spy on us and wanted to rid us of it. The rest I saw through the Other's eyes ...” Category: Essay Winning selection: A Mind is Like a Plant by John Cerjan Excerpt: The brain is directed from the time of its conception to classify things and specialize parts for certain jobs. Some parts absorb information, some carry it to where it is needed and others correlate it into usuable form. Although some people refuse to believe it. a mind is like a plant. . . All it would take to make the world flourish would be to feed everyone's mind. With the great amount of knowledge to be learned, if the world would just apply itself more, the world could be a giant garden with some of the most beautiful flowers ever seen in it! This program is very similar to Boys' State. After long lines of registration, students begin a chaotic time of voting, campaigning, going to classes during the day and having a special speakers and special events in the evenings. Through it all, the young women selected got a quality education in a short week period and an experience that they won t easily forget! Jodi Pengal. Julie .y p . Mary Lou Rich, (not pictured Faith McCallum) BOYS’ STATE 1986 Boys' State (sponsored by the American Legion) is a detailed educational program which reaches certain selected students about the processes involved in our government. Upon arrival, these fortunate young men start out a hectic schedule which includes running for offices in government (such as Governor, Senator, and House Representative). The young men are given Boys‘ Stare Money from which raxes, room board, and other expenses must be paid. Both the Boys' State program and the Girls' State program are based on a true to life structure of government. This teaches the young men and young women through first hand experiences the ideals and processes of our government. 113 Greg Strasscr. Ken Marsalis. Wayne Kraus. As the school year draws to a close, it is time to look back over the last nine months and remember all the experiences. good and bad. This year's yearbook staff started from scratch with two new advisors, two senior editors and a fresh, enthusiastic group of staff members. We struggled, and we coped. The first deadlines were rough, bur we worked and worked and came out on top of it all. This is your book, seniors, and we have tried our best to make it your best. To the juniors—just wait, because you only have one more year, and we’re sure that your senior year will be just as much fun as ours was and go just as fast as ours did. Sophomores—it only gets better from here!! This yearbook would not have been possible without a few key people. They were the ones who helped us through the g(X)d days and bad. First, our advisors, Mrs. Harper and Miss Campbell: without the guidance and help they gave, we would have been lost. They provided motivation when we thought there was none—they found encouragement when we could not—and they saw the bright side when all we could see was the dark. For all their time, help, and support we can not thank them enough. Second. Mr. Platano: he was always willing to help and find solutions to our questions and problems. And how could we forget. Mr. Kingery, our yearbook representative: he was not only patient and kind but also caring. He was consisrantly able to answer our questions whether on the phone or at our yearbook meetings. He was our link between our staff and Jostens, the publisher. And finally, we would like to thank our yearbook staff for all their hard work and dedication; they were the real backbone of Cardinal Notes. Without them we wouldn't have been able to make one deadline—let alone six. Thanks Everyone!!! And one last thank -you: to you the student body for supplying us with all the names, photos, information and memories contained in this book. It is you who make this yearbook special. Graduation is not far off. but as we leave Mentor High and the Cardinals, the friends and memories we have made here will last us a lifetime. L fa (VooL 210 I PARENT PATRONS Mr. Richard M. When our high school days are long gone, the Yearbook Staff hopes that you can look back at this yearbook and remember the events of the 1986 - 1987 school year. With articles and pictures, we will skim through the pages of this year from start to finish. On August 26th summer was over and it was time to return to the routine, regimented, educational system. There were new teachers, new classes, and maybe some new friends. As days went by we found our classes getting harder and we were itching for a break. We thought it would never get here, but 47 days later we were thankful Thanksgiving had arrived. As December rolled in we had no snow, but we all were thinking of Fun in the Sun ”, We all remember how easily our thoughts drifted from discussions and lectures to sunshine, good times, and Florida tans. Winter break had come and gone and before you knew it, you were looking back on Homecoming, Fall sports' seasons. ACT and SAT test, and first semester classes. I think the man who said The second time around will be easier was wrong because the classes seemed to get harder as the days went by. Winter sports came in with a thunder and we knew no one could blunder. We fled the classroom scene for a while and found some more Memories ” at the Winter Formal. The third grading period was over too; what would we do? Finally we realized how quickly it had all come and gone. Spring had passed with all it's fun; Easter, Spring Sports, Cardinal Relays, college choices, and of course we thought the Prom would never come. Through it all we learned and grew as individuals. We knew that yet another phase of our life was coming to an end. With 186 days finally over we are ready to rake another step! 220 All 1 want to do is pet out of here!! Ah yes! And there was lunchtime. Lasting friendships evolved. 221 Joanna Tomazic, Angie Sargent. Debbie Koerwitz. Paula McIntyre, Sue Krouse, Laura Miller, Nor pictured: Terrie Schenk and Paul Koerwitz.
