OREN CASEY As a token of our appreciation, we, the class of '64, dedicate this volume to one who exemplifies dedication. He has been teaching mechanical-drawing shop at Mentor for 32 years. His foremost ambition is to produce young men not only versed in the field of drawing but also eager to cross the threshold of the game called life. His pioneering efforts in forming the Mentor Teachers Association have earned statewide recognition. He has also been the State President of the Ohio Education Association's Department of Classroom Teachers. For these efforts and your dedication to Mentor High, we dedicate to you, Mr. Oren T. Casey, the 1964 Cardinal Notes. 3 In the largest city in I.ake County, 1700 students roll out of bed each morning, eat, dress, and board tlieir buses headed for Mentor High. If the day is bright, one ran see the Stars and Stripes floating over the campus. Too soon the eight o’clock bell sends distraught students scurrying to their homerooms. After an immortal “Thought for the Hay,” the never ending process of learning begins. Soon a third period study hall gives way to thoughts of forthcoming lunch periods. After this short time of laughter, chatter, and broken bottles, the school resumes its atmosphere as a home of knowledge. The halls are filled with the odor of another blunder in the chem lab or a whizsing experiment from the physics department. An ominous hush breaks into a small riot after the long awaited “that's all concludes the day. There is a mad scramble for a seat on the bus, and when the dust settles you find yourself seated beside one of—Our Gang. 4 SENIOR OFFICERS Dove Osborn, Vice President; Jeff Zorn, Secretary; Wode Theuerkauf, Treasurer; Don Dobbert, President September, 1963, marked the beginning of their last year in Mentor High School for 370 seniors. The class of 1964 chose Don Dobbert as its president, Dave Osborn as vice president, Jeff Zorn os secretary, and Wade Theuerkauf as treasurer. The class play “The Courtship of Eddie's Father was presented in November. The Homecoming Dance in November followed the successful completion of the football season. For the first time varsity basketball games were played in Ridge Junior High. The seniors presented their gift at the annual Awards Assembly. On June 3, 1964, the largest graduating class in Mentor's history crossed the stage at Severance Hall to receive diplomas. An increase of more than 50% over 1963 forced Commencement out of Lake County to larger facilities for the first time. 8 Michael Ahern Shirley Armstrong Timothy Askue Cheryl Atkinson Robert Aufmuth Brian Bahleda James Baldridge Peggy Ball James Barbiere William Barrow Dona Barry Anthony Barski Barbara Barstow 10 Laura Beam Beverly Beck Robert Benline Virginia Bauer William Best Judy Biller Bruce Blaser Terry Bokovitz Gale Bosley Thomas Boyadjis 11 David Bonnema Dianne Borrelli Barbara Brueggeman Claudia Brunner Margaret Brunson Paul Bukky Eileen Callahan Barbara Carrie Keith Carson Charles Cottell Edward Chesko George Churley Ronald Clement David Cline Marilyn Coll 13 Julie Conkey Sandra Connell Marshall Cowan Norma Crain Karen Collins Nancy Collins Carole Cottrell Colleen Cottrell Janice Crall Clifford Crites 15 Willis Droper Janet Druen Robert Durkee Marcia Dustman Robert Dyar David Eaton Thomas DuBay Robert Dufinetz Susan Duncan Michael Durchik 16 Barbara Felixson Douglas Filppi Richard Fisher Richard Ebbert William Eddy David Eguchi Kathleen Elliott Gregory Faulkner Patricia Evans Jane Fisk Joellen Frabotta Leni Jeon Fracci Brenda Frank Michael Frank Rebecca Fuchs Carol Fussner Earl Gallop June Gardner Terrence Gardner David Gartner Karl Gartner Gary Gebeau 18 Gregory Gibson John Gieroch Linda Glovitch Sandra Gould Robert Goetsch Robert Grabner Barbara Grau Lynnette Groff Elizabeth Haag Judith Hamilton Dennis Hammond Cathleen Hansen Kaye Harriger Timothy Harvey Daniel Harwood Sherrie Hawk 20 Dolores He:kmon John Hemphill Sandro Hendricks William Henley Carol Hennel Caro!? Science Club, Hi-Lites, Student Council, GAA, Pep Club, and the AFS Commission were activities she whole-heartedly participated in. Perhaps the sentiments of all can be expressed through her own words: “This year at Mentor High School has been just wonderful! Everyone has all the time been so nice and friendly, and I know I will be thinking a lot of you and miss you all. I have learned much valuable information about America and Americans, and be sure I will come again to this dear place! Thank you for everything! AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Vos and daughter Mieke Understanding among nations is the purpose of the American Field Service. This year the agency has sent Sue Harrison to live and study in Vlaardingen, Netherlands, in the home of Dr. and Mrs. A W. Vos. Although she was very active in GAA, as co-editor of the annual, and helped inspire the AFS Club, Sue feels that the experience she is getting abroad is enriching enough to compensate. Medical Workers Of Tomorrow The Medical Workers of Tomorrow are again furthering the knowledge of aspiring doctors, nurses, and funeral directors. Presided over by Dennis Gross, the club took numerous field trips during the year including a visit to Melbourne's Funeral Home and to the Cleveland Health Museum. Then and only then can there Be Peace. KEY CLUB The Mentor High School Key Club, sponsored by the Mentor Kiwanis Club, is doing a fine job to instill qualities of leadership, citizenship, and service. This club has had a distinguished record of community and school services and often undertakes the dirty work of many non-profit organizations. The boys have shown considerable initiative under the guidance of Mr. George Pit-zer, Mr. Jerry Kindsvatter, and Mr. L. Allen Smith. Don Dobbert presides over the group with Jeff Zorn as Vice President, Dave Osborn taking the minutes, and Wade Theuerkauf collecting the dues. The incoming members are chosen by the active members at the end of the school year. Fourteen freshmen, seven sophomores, and two juniors make up the list of allowable pledges. It is the highest honor conferred upon students at Mentor. To be eligible a pupil must be in the upper third academically of either the junior or senior class. Students are evaluated on a ten point scale by their teachers in each of three qualities. Choices are determined on the basis of each student's average points for all four attributes. At an induction assembly held in March ten per cent of the seniors were tapped. A later assembly saw five per cent of the juniors inducted. This year there were twenty-one members under the supervision of Mrs. Margaret Schormuller and Mrs. Mildred Boley. Various points are given to the girls each time they participate in o sport. This enables them to achieve the necessary 60 points needed to attend the annual GAA formal held during the Christmas season. This is, by the way, the only time fellows enter the scene, with the girls on the asking end of the rope. Other social events include the activities' night, GAA overnight, and awards banquet. 100 Rene McCarty, Joyce Horvath, Kothy Horvath, Pot Stone, Pom Creedon, Ann Stewort Donna Nadolski, Judy Wilcox, Nancy Horvath, Diane Kiefer, Jean Davis 101 JUNIOR CLASS Ken Krstolic, President; Dove Former, Secretory; Chuck Wogner, Vice President; Kathy Wore, Treasurer Annually two big financial problems face the Junior Class. They finance the Junior-Senior Prom, and they must absorb the cost of the 1965 Cardinal Notes. The ring bearers meet these problems in various ways. This year, as in the past, they were the highest class in the school magazine drive. This is the mainstay of their income. However, they also operate the concessions stand and sell Mentor High stationery. A group of Junior Thespians will supplement these sources by presenting the Junior Class Play, Pioneer Go Home. One talented student will be chosen from thin ranks to represent Mentor in a foreign country. This fortunate student will be the third from Mentor to go abroad. Burkhordt, Mrs. Evelyn M. Kehl, Mrs. Jane Hennel, Mrs Betty A. Jones, Mrs. Nancy W. Hinkle. You have had many memorable events which are recorded on the pages of your yearbook. These have been years of victory and defeat, joy and sorrow, growth and maturity. Some of your ambitions were achieved; some were frustrated. As you look back upon these years and refresh your memory from the contents of these pages, you will likely say, These were great years at Mentor High School. The defeats and sorrows tend to become less important and you will best remember those events which were victorious and brought you gladness. May your greatest ambitions be realized as you take your place in the events of life and may only the fondest memories of your high school days linger with you. Principal Superintendent DR. EDWARD MASONBRINK Congratulations to you, Class of 1964: In the records of Mentor High School, your class of nearly four hundred graduates is about fifty per cent larger than its predecessor, and you are followed by a class that may go over five hundred. You have seen Mentor grow from a village of a few thousand, to a city of over 25,000 people, and two new freeways opened to cross our community and link it more firmly and closely to its neighbors. No class of the past had more varied, interesting, or manifold opportunities for making its way into the future successfully. Surely you not only have already seen great History in the making in your high school years — you have helped to make history — and you will continue to do so in the years ahead. May the direction of that history always be constructive and advance the best in our society! MR. ELLIS M. HOSTETLER OFFICE STAFF C.
