Growing first in population, and then in size, our school more and more requires full time guid- ance for its intricate system of activities. Mr. Hostetler has capably met each challenge. Al- though he is kept very busy with his many duties, Mr. Hostetler always seems to be able to find enough time for a smile or a word of encourage- ment. His integrity and guidance have gained him the respect of the class of 1959. A A Co-captains - Ray Krstolic and Duke Wellington The year l958 was a memorable one for the Mentor High School football squad. Besides becoming co-champs of the N.E.C. league, they compiled a remarkable record in their lack of physical injuries both during practice and games, and provided northern Ohio with a few Press Stars and all-Ohio players. The long season of diligent and rugged practice reached a climax on a very muddy field one night in November when the Cardinal gridmen met their arch rival, Harvey High School, and slogged on with FOOTBALL superb come-baack prowess to a fateful l4- l4 tie. This perserverance and hard-nosed- ness exemplified perfectly the spirit of the players, and the game will be remembered as a tribut to the strength of Mentor High School. New developments and moral-builders created by the coaches included simplifica- tion of intricate blocking maneuvers, a su- perior game-night meal program, and the presentation of a Flaker Award to the loafer of the week. Fortunately, there was not extensive competition for the latter. This attention can be attri- buted to the amount of participation by the team and also to the fact that the track squad has taken the N.E.C. title in recent years. When a team exhibits such success as this, it is bound to be popular. The purpose of this organization is to link the student body with the faculty, to provide harmony between the students and the faculty, and to bring efficiency to our government. This year a new sys- tem of selecting the Student Council members has been installed. This play was a drama in three acts depicting a social prejudice held by some adults and teenagers. lt con- cluded by showing the people of Sycamore Street how wrong they were. The cast and director, J. Robert Jay, worked for eight weeks learning parts and shaping the play for its performance which was really effective and well done. Behind the scenes, several crews were needed to keep the play running smoothly. Although these seniors did not work as long as the cast, they did work hard and did contribute much to making the play a success. Assisting the director we re Gayle Traver and Roberta Shan- ower with Sandee Barstow holding the books and Jack Winter as stage manager. Fourteen seniors lined up props with some assisting in the fast change of scenery. Publicity was handled by eleven seniors and tickets by thirteen. The characters were made up by an efficient staff of five, and the stage work was done effectively by six. Our sophomore class of 1958-1959 can look back on their first year of high school life and recall all occasions, eventful or uneventful, big or small, that made their first year the success that it was. At the beginning of the year, they elected their officers. Ruth Rohl was elected president, Paul Dobert was elected vice-president, Bonnie Kushen was chosen to keep the minutes, and Ann Roy was selected to handle the money. These officers did an excellent job in conducting their meetings and carrying out their projects. The sophomore class is not only large but is also active. They have shown out- standing enthusiasm in sports, the magazine drive and other activities. Wendel- X Skip Sternen, President Bill Hoffman, Vice President 1 Joan Hennel, Secretary Donna Goodenough, Treasurer JUNIOR CLASS Having finally been moved to the status of juniors, this fine group of flappers is under the leadership of Albin Skip Sternen, supported by Bill Hoffman as vice president, Joan Hennel as secretary, and Donna Goodenough as treasurer. Their main concern this year is, of course, the Junior-Senior Prom, and since their funds are scraping the bottom, they are in the same situation the class of '59 was in. But, the junior class has shown loyalty and respect to MHS and are sure to make a splendid, lasting impression in Mentor High.
