Row Row Row Row Football i956 proved to be the year when Men- tor's spectacular Cardinals almost accom- plished the most important thing in local modern scholastic football. They came within one game af immortality as they ex- tended their fantastic winning streak to 37, one game less than that of the state record. Under the competent staff of an almost entirely new group of coaches, they com- pleted a successful season with seven wins and two losses. The only veteran of the staff was assistant coach Ray Hickerson, who along with assistant coaches Hal Ray, George Rosacker, and Clarence Reese, helped head grid- master Armin Riesen, Co-captains Jack Bradenbaugh and Ray Tomazic, along with the remainder of the squad, were defeated for the first time in four years at the game, which, if victorious, might have meant a new state victory mark. However, the Redbrids could not win, and their streak of 37 was one short of the desired goal of 38, Mentor's gridiron coaches, the four R's and an H , are to be complimented with the accomplishment of producing a successful squad after an earlier prediction of a five victory season, Mentor surprised everyone but the Cardinal fans as they increased the victory streak, week after week, until the thirty-eighth game. The Cards went on to win the remaining games scheduled with the exception of one, Thus, the season left them with a margin of four victories over the earlier prediction, a fitting tribute to a magnificent group.
