May you have health to enjoy the wonders of the new half-century, the intellect to cope with its problems, spirit and faith to carry you through troubles, and an optimism to buoy you up to meet successfully its stimu- lating challenges. While advancing toward any goal, it is wise to con- template the future frequently, review the past, check progress, survey what is still to be accomplished, and plan how it may best be done. At this mid-century mark Americans can well ask: How far have we proceeded the past fifty years? Where are we going the next fifty? Where are we now? What future course shall we plan for the concluding half of the twentieth century? In devising comforts, luxuries, labor saving machines, entertainment, means of travel, and weapons of war, we have come far, in improving government, homes, fine arts, international and inter-group relations, and im- proving democratic citizenship we still have far to go.
