Prospectors Jov Goss and 1 at Blount and their covered-wagon crew dug deep into the sands of time to present to you these records of their trip to the end of the rainbow. As the +9’ers of the nineteenth century travelled far in search of a bright future, we, the 49’ers of the twentieth century, have sought to make our lives more golden with these memories of our experiences at Mentor Hi. GEEK Contents ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISING SENIOR FEATURES ■ . f- ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Dedication To Mr. Dale R. Rice. . . who has so kindly and faithfully led the classes for twenty-five years through their high school days, and who has unflinchingly fared our difficulties, and has encouraged us in all the ways of a better life, we, the twenty-fifth graduating class of Mentor High School, gratefully dedicate this annual. Mr. Dale It. Rice Gdminisfaation Today’s world is a far cry from the world of the “49’ers.” Where “roaring camps” of gold seekers were common, settled communities of prosperous and progressive people now live; travel by prairie schooner has given way to stream-liner, plane, bus; simple fire-arms and cannon are displaced by machine gun, airborne bomb, and rocket; simple games and entertainment have been shaded by movies, BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. E. The high school student of today must be similarly advanced beyond the student of 1849. The conditions of the present require it. Good citizenship, the fulfillment of good education, can he accomplished for our time only as students match earnest endeavor and high ambition with the available school facilities. Mr. Ellis M. It doesn’t take the old “49’ers” long to start piling up their bags of gold by selling everything from Christmas cards to guest towels. And, as if that isn’t enough, they corral some of their best talent, to put on the grease paint and present the class play. The ‘49’ers” caravan almost bogs down, when the Juniors come through with a double victory in football and volleyball; but they get the wheels a rolling again by winning the basketball championship and keep them rolling by putting on a “Mid-season Mix-Up” dance. Presiding over the caravans’ activities, with the hearty approval of the bearded half of the “49’ers” is Gold Coast’s Homecoming Queen, Dolly Nagy. And now with the strains of their last prom dance in one ear and “Pomp and Circumstance” in the other, the “49’ers’ each begin to take their own path in search of the fabled pot o’ gold. Good luck to you all — everyone. JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL Valsit j football During tlie pre-school afternoons, ’neath a hot sweltering sun, the grunts and groans of the perspiring football team members are heard echoing from the football field. Nine returning lettermen bolster the Cardinal squad as other hopefuls seek to fill the vacancies. Handicapped by broken legs, noses, and the like, the Cards prepare to meet their opponents. Outstanding memories of the season are the 7-0 win over Warren St. M arv’s, and the rumpus that followed the game; the Suolahti benefit Reserve game with neighboring Fail-port; the rah-rah, rah-rah-rah of the cheerleaders; and shining above it all, even through the fog, we see our gal, M. H. S. Homecoming Queen of 19+8, Dolores Nagy, along with her attendants, Marty Bvler, Gerry Fedak, Betty Mate, and Mary Ann Booker. Despite the fog, Captain Jack Wachs comes through with the honors of the evening in fine style. All classes wage a stiff battle for the championship in basketball and voices from all sides of the gym are heard cheering the teams onward. The se'niors take the title and as old man Winter disappears, the battle rages on out in the wide open spaces with baseball and track uppermost in the minds of the boys. GIRLS’ INTRAMURALS I he Seniors come out on top as girls battle for intramural honors. Hockey and volleyball fill in as the girls anxiously await basketball season.
