Since they have had the opportunity of observing the activities of the upper classmen, they are able to reproduce them in their own class circle and thus learn the fundamentals of what will soon be expected of them when they enter high school. The Scholarship Club The Lake County Scholarship Club was organized in 1925, and has as its members high school students throughout the cou.nty who have at- tained sufficiently high standards of scholarship to merit admission. The grades considered in determining the number of scholarship points earned during the course of a year are those received at the close of the six week periods of the second semester of the preceding school year and the first semester of the following year, and also the final g1'ades of the first semester. From these seven grades for each subject the highest six are used in ascertaining the average for a year's period. The points designated the g1'ades are A, 5, B, 45 TC, 33 D, 1. Students carrying courses equivalent to four credits a year must earn 108 points for membershipg for four and one-half credits, 122 points must be earned, and 135 points are necessary for five units of credit. Mentor High School has four life members in the County club. To be a life member requires three years' membership in the club. The system of home room organization provides a life here at school that compares to the individual home life in the outside world. Each pupil has a home room to which he must report at morning and noon and before evening dismissal. At the beginning of every school year, class officers and student council representatives are elected by each class. Weekly class meetings are held and good training in parliamentary law is received by all the students in the carrying on and solving of school problems. The Junior Y, a club for boys, is open for membership to any of the younger boys of the school. A card is given to each member with a list of requirements and regulations. If these are all observed, a score of 1000 points is received and a triangle badge is awarded. The presiding officers for the year are Edward Munro, president, Jack Hughes, vice president, Malcolm Shanower, secretary and treasurer, and chairman of program committee, Robert Merkel. Mr. Miller is the faculty advisor of the club. One of the highest honors possible for a Mentor High School student to receive is the Service M letter. This award is given as a signification of a student's successful participation in many diversified school activities and thus having gained the required number of service points. If a student earns eighty points, he is awarded a six inch block letter M, g1'ay with a scarlet border. Sixty points earns a felt letter, and forty points a certifi- cate. Points are awarded for participating in athletics, being a member of the Student Council, being a member of a publication staff, being a class officer, and participating in various other activities. Mentor High School students are given opportunity to develop a sense of aesthetic appreciation, discriminating judgment, and refinement of taste when they elect the art course which is under the direction of Miss Carmen. In the Junior High School, a similar art course is being given and this course is compulsory. Decorative maps were made, pen and ink drawing was done preparatory to taking up painting, and original and copy work was specialized in by some of the High School class, while the making of posters and clay modeling has employed the interest of the Jun- ior High School. fr arf 5' v -'Q ALXHX .fi ff!! 9 xf- nf 9, HEAL TH g g, s c A R LgE 'rf N o c R vggygjqx Elbert Tiscllendsorf Rachel Bryant Roscoe K. There are also many Freshmen from last year's Junior High champion team, who are trying for varsity places. The girls' schedule is almost identical with the boys' and is hard enough for any track team. Willoughby, Madison, Perry, and Painesville, are to be met and then the county meet will test the team to the utmost, and success for both teams in this meet is, necessary for Mentor to win the championship. l'1Dl'lX-SiN -? g ps c A R Lg: 11 A534 0 ca R Nggl g v if I' l t Vin Horn. Bo S, Trac Boys' track, at press time, is not very far advanced, but prospects are for another bright season. During the last four years of county track competition, the Scarlet of Mentor has taken three championships. Last year the boys made a good County record and practically the same team is back, with some valuable new members. Alex Orvos captains this year's track and field team. Dwight Boyer, Wendell Mellon, Clyde Hale, Robert Van Horn, Harold Taylor, Lynn Jack- ett, Leonard Booth, Bill Simmons,, Merle Allen and Charles Rhodes will probably be the outstanding contestants. In the first annual indoor meet the Juniors Won highest honors with the Sophomores second, Seniors third, and Freshmen last. Dual meets have been arranged with various schools i.nc1uding Will- oughby, Madison, Perry and Painesville. With this aim in view various, vocational departments have been created where a pupil may specialize in the line of work which interests him and which prepares him to secure a position after graduation or to go to higher educa- tional training. Hftv Q' ,ii , Y ff misss A R Q 0 R v muxg Manual Arts Under the able management of Mr. Ti.schendorf, head of the manual training department, the projects carried out this year in this field of work have been original in quality and varied in idea. This year the department has been located in the new portable build- ing, which consists of four rooms. The effectiveness of this course is due to the abundance of material and machinery with which to work and the suitable place in which to use them. In cooperation with the domestic science department, a model walnut bed1'oom set, with the necessary furnishings made entirely by the sewing classes, has been fitted out for the school exhibit and the fair exhibit. The bedroom set consists of a bed, chest of drawers, a vanity dresser and bench, a cedar chest, a night table, a spinet desk, and a chair. This de- partment is also making walls and windows from beaver board to give the realistic impression of a bedroom. In the third year, opportunity is given to the student of either spec- ializing in architecture or of taking advanced furniture making. This year there are twenty-one in this class, ten of whom are taking the ade- Vanced furniture making and eleven the architecture. Hfty-one 1 - AL' JQJQ SCARLFT AN en v 'gglmu Home Economics Mrs. C-lark, head of the home economics department, has succeeded in making this year's work in that direction both profitable and interesting to her pupils. The cooking classes have devoted much of their time to the planning of meals and the making of foods. Colorful smocks and pajamas have been made by the Junior High girls while the Freshmen have become interested in health posters. The Sophomore girls have studied colors and types and have demonstrated their knowledge of what they, individua!1y, should wear by making silk and cot- ton dresses. They have spent considerable time, also, on scrap-fashion books. The Junior sewing classes have made flannel ensembles. All of the classes have united in furnishing the bedroom which is to be the combined project of the domestic science classes and the manual arts classes. This bedroom is to be on exhibit at Mentor school exhibit, and also at the Fair. The articles which the sewing classes are making to furnish it are sheets, pillow slips, dimity curtains, two lamps, a vanity set, and silk pillowsj Other individual projects for this year have been pleated lamp shades, fancy waste-baskets, aprons, slips, and woven rugs. fifty-two -, ...t , ll Commercial Department The commercial department has been under the direction of Miss Walcutt this year. A student who follows this course is eligible to take typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, commercial law, and business English. In the second year the student studies bookkeeping, and in his third and fourth years the remainder of the commercial subjects are given with the exception of commercial law, which is elective. The average number of words a minute for first year typing students is 30 and for second year students, 45. Pins are awarded for 40, 50, and 60 words a minute, the first being bronze, the second, silver, and the third, gold. Each year Mentor enters students in the County Typewriting and Shorthand Contest. The first year students of typing who entered the contest this year were William Davies, Edna Gaffney and Edith Jepson. The contestants in the novice shorthand group were Eloise Lingafelter, Doris Koehler, and Edith Kaiser. In the second year of typing and short- hand, Pauline Dayton, Marion Davies, and Helen Gunesch were contestants. flfty-three fl , gli- W4-1 . 1 JG, slc A R LE 'r AN D c nAYQ,qyjbx' gag SCA LAFT Ano cn v IQMU Tliirel rfmw-l-larolcl Smith, XYilli:1m XYarv, Louise I'ap,'4-, Allll'L1'il1'l'f Ilohhins, Zellu Uuttrv-ll, ,Xrlvxiv Vol'-, XVar1's-n liichmoml. The Com- entor For the past Your years the students oi' Mentor High School have succeeded in editing every two weeks an exceptionally fine paper, the Com--Mentor. Under the auspices of Mrs. George, head of the English department, the Com-Mentor has progressed to such an extent that, during the year 1928, it carried off the honor of second place in the state contest for a paper published by a student body of Mentor's size. The student heads of the paper this year are Margaret Whelan, editor- in-chief, and Walter Cooke, business manager. Under their combined ef- forts the paper has published school news and accounts of athletic events, the best editorials and poems, and the most interesting advertisements for the local merchants.
