Harris SENIOR. I-IISTCJIEQEZ' AS SENIORS, we can look back and remember our four years at M.H.S. We can remember all of the fun we have had these past four years. Now let's take a step back to our freshman year. Everyone was so mixed up and nervous. We were asking the upper classmen where a certain class was and sometimes getting the wrong answer. After we settled down a trifle, we elected our Student Council members. They were: jeanne Biers, Karen Handley, Dave Murdock, and Iohn Larsen. Our freshman class officers were, Willie Hanson, president, Carol VV right, vice-president, and Kathy Corrigan, secretary-treasurer. Our class ad- visers were: Mrs. Fischer, Mr. Gehler, Mr. Rollins, Miss Pottinger, Mr. Waity, Mr. Gooden, and Mrs. Lipke. Then we had our first big dance, the Homecoming. The Homecoming attendants were: Kathy Corrigan and Willie Hanson. Despite all of our many mishaps, our freshman year was an exciting one to remember. After getting acquainted with fellow students and teachers, and having conquered the daily routine with smoothness and ease our freshman year, fall soon rolls around and we return as sophomores with renewed vigor and anticipation of the future events. To lead us in these events were our class officers: Scotty Iacobs, president, Diana Sondgeroth, vice-president, and Don Avery, secretary-treasurer. Student Council members helped with the gala Homecoming festivities. Our sophomore representatives were: Kathy Piller, Dave Murdock, john Larsen, Karen Handley, and Ieanne Biers. The attendants chosen from our class were Scotty Iacobs and Kathie Schmidt. But our biggest, most thrilling event was still yet to come. This was choosing our class rings. Diana Sondgeroth, Karen Handley, Barb Weber, Carol Rich, Kathy Corrigan, Don Avery, Gary Smith, Scotty Iacobs, Rich Medlar, and Don Kettleborough were selected as our commit- tee to choose the ring style. We awaited anxiously and impatiently for our Trojan trademarks to come. No words could express the happiness We felt when they finally came. But, without the aid and assistance of our advisers Mr. Vlfaity, chairman, Mr. Gehler, Mr, Rollins, Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Boner, Mr. Booker, Mrs. Lipke, and Mr. Gooden, we would not have all the wonderful moments to cherish today. It seemed like only a very short time, and all of a sudden we were juniors. Upperclassrnen at last! All we had left of the two previous years were wonderful memories. To speed our junior year on its way, we elected Carol Rich, class president, Carol Wright, vice- president, and Kathy Corrigan, secretary-treasurer. Our steering committee consisted of Don Kettlebor- ough, Bill Rider, Wayne Whitmore, Kathy Schmidt, Dave Davis, Carol Rich, Carol Wright, Karen Handley, Cora Burley, and Kathy Corrigan. This junior steering committee assisted the junior class officers on many occasions with hard Work and planning. Our Student Council members who helped with many other school events were: Don Avery, jeanne Biers, Cora Burley, Karen Handley, Kathy Piller, and Diana Sondgeroth. Two excited juniors were Anita Setchell and Dave OUR IUNIOR PLAY-Mr. Warren re- ceives a token of appreciation from the cast members for his fine work in directing the play. The members are: Norman Porter, Angela Druen, Ieanne Biers, Nancy Gallagher, Ioyce O'Sad- nick, Carol Wright, Don Kettle- borough, Ron Iacob, Lynn Brewbaker, Rich Medler, Tom Guilfoyle, Scotty Iacobs, Mr. Warren, Donna Iackson, Iohn Larsen, Dave Murdock. Davis as they were chosen to represent the junior class as attendants at the 1961 Homecoming. As spring rolled around, the juniors put on a crowd drawing, three act comedy play entitled Cheaper By The Doz- en on April 29 and 30. The cast gave a splendid per- formance both nights, disregarding a couple of humor- ous mishaps. With spring here, the junior class started making plans for the long awaited Prom entitled Midnight Fantasy, We selected Diana Sondgeroth and Rich Medlar as prom co-chairmen. The prom was a success and an unforgettable event due to the hard work and planning of the committee members and willing class workers. Special thanks can be given to the junior class advisers: Mrs. Fischer, Mr. Iordal, Mr. Waity, Mr. Gehler, Mr. Bloomstrand, Mr. Gooden, and Mrs. Lipke for their help and advice. The memorable Post-Prom, sponsored by the Elks and Lions, was a huge success, as always, and a good time was had by all. No matter how tired the juniors were the next day, many of them were seen at various parks on traditional picnics. Now we're seniors! lt's been a long time for some. For some, it was as quick as snapping your fingers. For some, it is the last schooling they will obtainy others will continue their education. Three boys were chosen to lead the senior class. They were: Bill Rider, president, Don Avery, vice-president, and left Goebel, secretary-treasurer. Chosen from homerooms to help plan class activities along with our advisors was the steering committee consisting of Don Avery, Bill Rider, Betty Booth, Karen Handley, Rich Sander, jeff Goebel, Dale Frey, Don Kettleborough, Diana Sondgeroth, and Wayne Whitmore. Our class advisers for the last year were: Miss Paul, Miss Kelly, Mr. Murdock, Mrs. Doenier, Miss Breese, Miss Payne, and Mr. Doenier. Bus rides, Homecoming activities, and other serv- ices were very capably handled by the Student Coun- cil which had the seniors Ieanne Biers, Kathy Piller, Karen Handley, Scotty lacobs, lohn Larsen, and Dave Murdock serving us faithfully and trying to set an ex- ample for us. A very happy memory was assured Anita Setchell and Scotty Iacobs as they were chosen to be the royalty at an unforgettable Homecoming. The senior attendants were Roger Sheridan and Kathy Corrigan. Many projects such as magazines, class play tick- ets, and the concession stand were undertaken to fi- nance the l963 Atodnem. Many long, dreary nights were spent at the concession stands. Sometimes we thought we would never receive enough business to make a profit, but our willing and capable seniors sure drummed up the business. The seniors had many parties which held fun for everyone who attended. An exciting day for us was when the finished senior pic- tures arrived. We thought everybody took a good pic- ture, and we wanted to exchange photos with every- one in the class. The faculty just couldn't seem to calm us down that day. The seniors also had a hard time making up their minds as to which graduation invitation to vote for. Many of the seniors will never forget this last year book because they put so much hard work and time into it. Our biggest thrill was having for the first time in Mendota's history a Foreign Exchange Student. This charming and gracious student is Carol Galvez. Mem- ories of her will always be cherished. Although our paths in life may never cross again after we leave M.H.S., each of us will always remem- ber the many wonderful times we have had. Now we say, farewell, Seniors anxiourbf await graduation - une jj 1963 The seniors perform one cf their last duties, the measuring for their caps and gowns to be worn at baccalaureate and commencement exercises, 'I'I-IIE! THE IUNIOR CLASS, upperclassmen at last, started the year by rais- ing money from the concession stand in football and sponsoring dances throughout the year. Their first event of the year was electing Rich Bohn and Sandy Kettleborough as their representatives in the Homecoming festivities. Practicing and working on their play, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, was their first big job with the prom as their second. Under the co-chairmen Mary Lou Klinefelter and Lee Scheidenhelm, they rnade decorations for the theme T he Enchanted Sea. The class officers and the Student Council members, Don Baker, Kay Althaus, Linda Bunton, Kathy Goebel, lim Musick and Paul Wag- ner, helped build up the class treasury for the next year, THE SOPHOMOBES in their second year in high school were led by their officers and the Student Council members: Ioan Althaus, lean Ann Bunton, Iean lacob, Barbara Stremlau, and Bill Corrigan. The Homecoming festivities were the first activities for the sopho- more class, especially for their attendants, Louie Moore and Barb Kratz. The class rings as usual were the center of attraction. Maga- zine sales and record dances helped in the class treasury for the hard years ahead as upperclassmen, THE EBESHMEN, like all other new students, started the school year in bewilderment and amazement. However, they soon adjusted themselves to high school life by electing class officers and Student Council members: Martha Beetz, Dennis Hinlcle, Arlene Faulk, and Sandra Yost. They experienced the fun of MHS by joining in school activities, the first of which was Homecoming. Madeline Pitstick and Iohn Beetz were chosen to represent the freshmen in the Homecoming court. A good start was given them through the guidance and help of their advisers: Mr. Bieke, Mr. Gehler, Mr. Saunders, Mrs. Fischer, Mr. Gooden, Mr. Rollins, Mr. Warren, and Mr. Beals. The function of the Student Council is to promote the best interests of the school and create the opportunity tor student leader- ship and service in school activities. As a group it of- fers excellent opportunities for bettering student rela- tionship with the faculty and the community. Membership is composed of students elected by their classmates, and the class president are ex officio members. ln order to be more efficient as a group, the Council is divided into three committees: social, prob- lems, and ways and means. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by a Student Council member before each assembly, in line with the Councils desire to increase the display of patriot- ism at MHS. This is the second year the Council has presented the pledge. The student body and the fac- ulty think this is a fine practice, Freshman Orientation Day was one of the first major activities sponsored by the Council. This day is held to acquaint the new students with activities, rules and general procedures at Mendota High School. The main activity of the Council was the super- vision of the 15th annual Homecoming week. The theme was Deep Purple, and a special Homecoming week was planned. The Council also supervised all student elections and arranged for buses to the out of town games. The Council is responsible for College Night and the March of Dimes charity game, Members are also responsible for planning and work that makes possible our Career Days. This year the Student Council was under the guid- ance of Ieanne Biers, President, Don Baker, Vice-Presi- dentg and Bill Corrigan, Treasurer. Council advisers were Mr. Baile and Mr. Morgan, who assisted them in their many and various duties. FOR THE FIRST TIME in many years cr class iloat won iirst place. IN 1958, UPON recommendation of the faculty, the National Honor Society was re-instated in Mendota. This year's leaders were president, Roy Keyt, vice- president, Carol Wright, and secretary-treasurer, Kathie Schmidt. Miss Strouss was their adviser. To be eligible for membership, students must be sophomores who have maintained a grade average of B or 3.00. The faculty votes on each individual con- sidering his service, character, and leadership. Sopho- mores are elected probationary members, they have a voice but no vote. The active members are the juniors and seniors. This chapter's purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate desire to render service, to promote Worthy leadership, and to encourage the de- velopment of character in our high school. VIL 191' 3 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS of America is an organ- ization for girls who have met the requirement of pass- ing one semester of Home Economics, passing an in- itiation, and earning fifteen points by coming to meet- ings, serving on committees, etc. The membership in FHA increases every year. Many activities were planned throughout the year, starting with a picnic at Lake Mendota which was followed by a scavenger hunt. The girls chose for their float theme: l..et's Make Tiger-Burgers Out of Them. The Section 19 Fall Rally was held at Streator. It was attended by 54 FHA members from Mendota, along with their advisers, Mrs. Fischer and Mrs. Lipke, and the two chapter mothers, Mrs. Piller and Mrs. Scheidenhelm. The theme of this Rally was Youth Can Do . Near Christmas was Santa Sister week, each girl had a secret sister and wrote notes to her. The girls were revealed to each other at the Santa Sister ban- quet. On january 10, a scramble supper was held for the initiation of the thirty-one new members. The old members, their mothers, and the initiates' mothers were invited to attend. A demonstration of hair styling was given by the guest speaker, Mr. Avery. A special feature this year was Daddy Date Night . Each girl brought her father, games were played, and refreshments were served. Mr. Walzer and ludy were chosen as the most look-alike father and daughter. The state and national projects were a Focus on Family, Friendship, You and Your Values, Marriages Call For Preparation, Action For Citizenship, Staying in School and Know Your Neighbors, and these projects were carried out at club meetings. Focus on Family Friendship was emphasized at Daddy Date Night and the Mother-Daughter scramble supper. A panel discus- sion by senior boys and girls on the problems of dat- ing, going steady, engagement, and marriage fulfilled the project, Marriages Call For Preparation. Carol Galvez, our foreign exchange student, helped us know our Neighbors by telling us how her home and school life compared with ours. The week of March 31 to April 6 was F.H.A. week. Our activities for the week included, Sunday, go to church, Monday, a carnation for each lady teacher, and a red apple for each gentleman, Tuesday, all members wore the F.H.A. colors of red and white, Wednesday, was community service day and the club donated S25 to the A.F.S. program, Thursday was dress-up day, Friday and Saturday the members helped at home and had family recreation. Installation of new officers was held at the May meeting. The 8th grade girls were guests of the club and a style show was held for their entertainment. Re- freshments were served. Statistically the affirmative team of Leslie Koerper and Pat Maher won l6'Z, while the negative team of Phil Carlson, Dick Setchell, and Doug Carna- han won 632. Pat, Leslie, Phil, and Dick compiled a 4-4 record at the conference tournament in DeKalb to tie for third. N.F.L., The National Honor Society for Forensic Students, sponsored the district state tournament at Normal on February 8-9. Fifty debate teams entered the two-man cross-examination debates. Following the rules set up, each team alternated from affirmative to negative and continued competing until it was de- feated twice. Phil Carlson and Dick Setchell debated for MHS and remained in competition until there were only l5 teams out of the original 50 left. When de- NOVICE DEBATER-STANDING: K, Leiser, D. Carnahan, I. Ten Novice debaters gained some valuable experi- ence during the competition in tournaments at Men- dota, Davenport, Central Northern, and East Peoria. The l962 and 1963 MHS debaters presented argu- ments for and against the question: Resolved: that the U.S. should promote a common market for the West- ern Hemisphere. Before debating a subject, the debaters must first do a large amount of background reading. They must take notes from recent newspaper and magazine arti- cles and keep complete files of these notes. Debating presents a lot of work for the squads, but they enjoy doing it because they realize that debate adds to the prestige of our school by representing us throughout the state. The squads would like to thank their coach, Miss Kelly, for what they have gained through debate. VARSITY DEBATE-STANDING: P. Maher, Miss Kelley, adviser, D. Since the four main char- acters were required to master an Irish brogue in order to make the play more convincing, this was a very difficult play to present, Mr. Whelan directed the cast that consisted of Ioyce O'Sadnick, Barb Zimmerlein, Kathy Har- ris, Lynn Deaner, Rick Bohn, Helen Williams, Rich Medlar, Rich Weitzel, and Diane Mathe- sius. Ioyce, Barb, and Kathy were honored by being named members of the N,C.I,C. All-Star Cast at Ottawa. The play placed second in conference competition at Ottawa on Febru- ary 9, and third at the district contest held here at Mendota on February IE. Placing third at district enabled the cast to go on to section- al at Peoria Richwoods on March 9, Where their production placed sixth out of twelve schools in competition. The play was pre- sented to the student body on March l3. CONTEST PLAY-STANDING: H. Williams, Mr. Wehlan, director, L. Dean- er: FRONT ROW: I. O'Sadnick, C, Harris, B. Zimmerlein. A - CONCERT IB.A.JN'JD THE MENDOTA HIGH SCHOOL band has once more completed a full year's program under the di- rection of Mr. Baile. The band again this year demon- strated a series of precision marching drills for the football half-time shows. For the Homecoming half- time show, they portrayed a Week in a band mem- ber's life. They showed such things as the exercises performed by the gym classes and the explosions cre- ated in chemistry class. Throughout the year, the Concert band, with the as- sistance of their parents, have been busy raising funds for their tour to Indiana. Selling salt Water taffy and sponsoring dinners for different organizations were the major money-making projects, supplemented by cooky and candy bar sales. A Well-received program during the year was the Concert band's fourth Annual Symphony Concert. Overture l8l2 and Symphony 4 by Tschaiskow- sky were the two major numbers and were very Well performed. Mr. Rebuck, Mrs. Bergagna, and Carol Wright were soloists at the concert. The band this year took a trip to Hobart, Indiana which is Mr. Baile's hometown, Where they played a concert. While on their trip, they also heard the Chi- cago Symphony Orchestra. The band has presented various student assemblies throughout the year. They have also marched in many parades and presented many programs. Baccalaure- ate and graduation are usually the last programs pre- sented. The Varsity band is to be congratulated on their fine help and co-operation to the Concert band. There has also been a new addition to the Concert band this yearg they have an assistant director, Mr. Richardson. Without the help and co-operation of many, the Concert band could never have had such a successful year, CONCERT BAND-FOURTH ROVV STANDING: T. Dawes, G. Smith, G. Warren, E. Cole, D. VARSITY FOCTIBALL THIS YEAR'S TROIANS showed great desire even though they ended up with a 3-4-l record. The team seemed to lack something, but what this was no one knows. However, when the old Mendota fight prevailed and the boys did win, they turned in per- formances to be proud of. All the teams that Mendota played felt the full effects of the conditioned Lewis- Rollins coached men. Finishing third in the conference is not the whole story of this year's team. Because of operations, Willie Hanson, john Larsen, Dennis Pohl, and Rich Becker were unable to play, and their loss proved to be costly to the team. Men seeing considerable action on offense were: linemen-Bill Rider, jim Christmann, Rich Bohn, Lynn Brewbaker, Bob Swisher, Don Avery and Neil Alshouse, The backfield consisted of: Rog Sheridan, Rich Sander, Chris Goebel, Don Baker, Dave Davis, Rich Medlar and Bob Haley. Active at end positions were: Wayne Whitmore, Doug Long, Phil Woods, Steve Dancey, and Charlie Carter. The Trojans opened the season at St. Bede with a l4-14 tie. Spirits were dampened with the loss of Scotty jacobs, first string half-back. ln the second game of the season, played with Ottawa, who was ranked sixth in the state, fumbles proved costly to Mendota. We ended up on the short end of a 32-20 score. In the first N. C. I. C. game we defeated Geneseo 14-G. However, in the next game with Rochelle, one of the best in the state, we ended up scoring only one touch- down. Chris Goebel plunged across the goal line to make the final score read 31-6. On Homecoming night the boys were ready, and they showed it by trimming the Princeton Tigers 25-6 in a hard fought contest. The following game with Hall proved to be damp and dreary night for the Trojans. A few breaks our way could have changed the score around. When the final gun sounded the score read Hall 31, Mendota l3. ln the last conference game, the Trojans blanked the Rock Falls Rockets 20-O. The final game of the season with Sterling found the Trojans on the small end of a 27-7 score. Thanks to Coach Waity cmd as- sistant Coach Gorecki, the Iaytees were molded into a well-developed team that possessed a strong desire to Win. Forty sophomores and nine freshmen on the team give good indication that next year will be a good year for MHS football. With men like these graduating into varsity, there will be plenty of good timber on which Mendota can build its football hopes. In their tirst three games they were downed by scores ot 13-7, 21-19, and 13-U by St. Bede, Rochelle, and Dixon respectively. The Trojets weren't discouraged by their defeats as Mr. Gooden's grid men came back with two sizeable victories. One was over Princeton 33-13, and the other was over Rock Falls 13-7. When the final whistle blew on their last game with Strecrtor, the Trojets were on the short end of a 33-I3 score, thus ending their first season, Under the fine coaching ot Gooden, Reike, and Gorecki, these l'green freshmen were shaped into a fine Well-trained team. VARSITY IBASIKIEITIBALL The Trojans of Mendota High School finished an- other highly successful season in basketball and much of the success would have not been possible without head coach Bob Beals. Coach Beals, in finishing his third year at MHS, ran up a record of l8 victories against only 5 defeats and a three year total of 56 wins against 15 setbacks. One of the highlights of the year came when the Men of Troy captured the St. Bede Invitational Tournament title. With six lettermen including four starters from last year's team, Coach Beals continued his high scoring fast-break attack, unmatched in the area. The Trojans started fast, taking their first seven contests in a row. Then, they hit a cold night in the Marquette Tourna- ment and lost to the Toluca Wildcats. They won four more in a row before losing to St. Bede, won three more, then lost to Streator in a real heartbreaker, won another before losing to Sterling in the regular season SEASON SCHEDULE WE THEY 82 Earlville 60 68 Amboy 4 8 88 Princeton 72 69 Hall 4 l 7 3 St. Bede 5 7 82 Dixon 54 90 Geneseo 74 86 Kewanee 76 71 St. Bede 76 6 8 Ottawa 66 80 Dekalb 6 8 7 l Bock Falls 6 2 54 Streator 58 78 Marquette 74 89 Rochelle 8 l 70 Amboy 69 6 8 Sterling 8 l MARQUETTE HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT 73 Marseilles 51 52 Tolu ca 73 ST. Trailing most of the game, the Trojans caught the Bedans and led by two points in the third quarter. But a cold ,fourth quarter spelled disaster and the end of the season as one of the great- est teams in Mendota history finished its campaign. The team and its record is history now but few will forget it. One of the brightest spots in the lineup was the incomparable Willie Hanson, leading the Way in several departments, including being named to the all-state team. His running mate at guard, Roger Sheri- dan, was another standout in the area and a potent scorer. None of the starters are back for next year's team, but it is certain that Coach Beals, the man Who put Mendota on the basketball map , will come up with something new and exciting for the fans. The Iaytees started by Winning their opener at Earl- ville, 47-33, losing to Amboy 34-21, losing to Princeton in a double overtime, 56-54, beating Hall, 42-34, losing to St. Bede, 37-35, and beating Dixon 42-32. They then hit a dry spell as they lost to Genesee, 50-44, St. Bede, 40-34, Kewanee, 53-35, Ottawa, 69-58, and DeKalb, 46-43. The latter part of the season was more success- ful as they looked like a much better ball club in all the games despite losing a few tough ones. They next loeat Rock Falls 52-48, lost to Streator, 64-42, lost to Marquette, 52-27, beat Rochelle, 63-56, beat Amboy, and closed out the season losing to Sterling, Seeing considerable action on Morris Morgan's squad this year were lohn Whitmore, Dave Faulk, Rich Dulce, Bill Corrigan, Lewis Moore, Rich Wujek, Ernie Wilhelm, Dennis Neal, and Terry Dalton. Next year these boys will help make up the varsity Trojans' team and will surely help them to a success- ful season. IAYTEE LETTER WINNERS Bill Corrigan Terry Dalton Rich Duke Dave Faulk Louie Moore Denny Neal lohn Whitmore Ernie Wilhelm Rich Wujek AFTER A SLOW start, the trosh team came on strong during the last halt ot the season to post an admirable 4-8 record. Under new trosh coach Sam Snuttin, the team was greatly improved as the season progressed, beating teams that had beaten them ear- lier in the season. The Trojets were downed in their first outing by Hall, 35-28, then lost a heartbreaker to St. Bede by a score ot 35-28 and to Marquette by a 35-3l margin. After losing games to Princeton by 52-43, La Salle-Peru by 59-46, and Ottawa by 39-35, they started on their Winning ways that were to give them their strong tin- ish. They looked real tough in dropping Princeton, 60- 4l, on the losers' home court. They were then sur- prised by Bochelle, 59-46, and St. Bede, 40-36, and Ottawa, 49-42. They then came back to beat LaSalle- Peru, 41-39, in a thriller, crushed Hall, 46-32, and tin- ish the season with a 44-30 Win over Marquette. Members ot the team who saw most ot the action this year were Steve Hanson, Bob Stevens, Dennis Hinkle, Duane Yost, lim Chandler, Bob Weber, and Clayton Deaner. This should be a real impressive team next year playing as the 63-64 laytees in the North Central Sophomore Conference.
