Po ve veu fab 14 FIRST SESSION OE THE CONVENTION IN THE HOTEL BENTLEY This dance at the Knights of Columbus hcxII was held for all the Sodalists cmtiendinq the convention. 0 l The Honorable Carl B. Close, Mayor of Alexandria, welcomed the Socialists in a speech given at the Hotel Bentley. SOLEMN PON TIF ICAL MASS His Excellency and four altar boys- I. Bruno, S. Webb, B. Bruno, and C. Wallace. Allen Lasseigneg Rev. A. Kearns, S. 1.5 Carl Clement, Rev. Herbert Walker, S. Lp Rt. Rev. Monsignor E. Plutz. The following is the speech delivered by Carl Clement, a student at Menard, at the Fifth Alexandria Diocesan Convention. A WORLD OE CLEAN ENTERTAINMENT It isn't a surprising matter that people of today have a difficult time, in general, to find a wholesome place for entertainment. Most persons find themselves attending a movie or listening to the radio or reading a book dur- ing their leisure hours. As far as movies are concerned, our National Legion of Decency has helped us considerably in choosing the shows which will afford clean pleasure. Of course, there are some who glance at the decency list just to notice which ones they shou1dn't see rather than the ones that are for general patronage. However, these are few in number. This seeing of the lists containing class B and C pictures was one of the main objections when it was seeking approval. If we are conscious of our obligations as Sodalists, we should look upon this censor of shows as a grace from God which needs only cooperation to help spread good entertainment among good people. Our radio programs also have given us hours of listening pleasure. I hardly think that any of us should have qualms of conscience because a selection from Aida was presented. No, it's rather from the jokes which are told on the programs of so-called comedians, who, perhaps at one time or another, were amusing, but who now still are on the air, living on the name they made when their jokes were fit for Dad to hear as well as for the youngest child. Again, we should be thankful that there is little to fear nowadays from the radio, for our government is rather careful as to what its people hear. And now we face our third big entertainment-reading matter-no matter whether it comes to us under the form of a book, a newspaper, or picture magazines. Witness the current literature of the day, which is penetrated with the spirit of ltcenttousness, from the pretentious quarterly to the arrogant and fltppant datly newspaper, and the weekly and monthly publications, which are mostly heathen. They express and tnculcate, on the one hand, cold and polished pride of mere intellect, or on the other, empty and wretched senti- mentality, irreligious and impious principles. The illustrated press has be- come to us what the amphitheater was to the Romans when men were slain, women were outraged, and Christians given to the lions to please a degen- erated populace. Do not the laws of every civilized land condemn those who sell poison indiscriminately, and can you blame the Church for condemning those who poison the souls of their fellow men, who rob them of their holy faith, who deprive them of the means of salvation, of the assistance of God's grace, who rob them even in their dying hour of the consolations of religion, of even the hope of heaven? That very poison, Sodalists, is not contained in bottles but rather comes to us from the printing presses of our nation. There are books and magazines in which cold-blooded murders, frightful suicides, the legal dissolution of the matrimonial tie, the tampering with life in its bud, are glorified. All these are humiliating facts sufficient to convince any impar- tial mind that if the devil were presented with a blank sheet of paper and bade to write on it the most fatal gift to man, he would simply write INDECENT LITERATURE. 'I'he man or woman who peddles such trash wishes to have the innocent children of the Christian family rebel against God by promising them, as Satan did, the riches, honors, and pleasures of this world. He is blind, and he attempts to lead: he is ignorant, and he offers to teach and direct the young. How incomprehensibly strange it is that there are so many men and women in our day who give ear to this tempter instead of saying, Get thee behind me, Satan, because, thou are a liar and a cheat from the be- ginning. Sodalists, our iob with regard to the subject of clean entertainment lies Within ourselves. lt's not a question of trying to convince another of his duty to attend only the shows approved, to read only the books suggested, and to listen to the radio programs of some symphony orchestra, but rather for us to be convinced that our example in such matters will surpass all the preaching of the most eloquent. Let us hope that from these few considerations, we may form a few resolutions conceming our entertainment, and that this Sodality convention may be longed remembered as having produced salutary effects upon us. Those 'who have devoted their lives to the companionship of books, and even others to whom a book affords merely a passing pleasure, find that read- ing in many ways proves both useful and agreeable. It makes a man acquaint- ed with all the world about him, broadens his mind: sharpens his intellect: renders him eager for knowledge, gives him a readiness in conversation, and develops his powers of thought. lt is a gentle remedy for the troubled and the ill, especially for the confirmed invalid: and like a sweet dream that sometimes visits a sleeper, it will charm the peaceful reader and delight him with fantastic pictures for whole hours together.
