Van de Ven, D.D., moved his Episcopal See from Natchitoches to Alexandria. St. Francis Xavier Church then became the Cathedral of the Diocese. Today the old church built by Rev. Father Menard is one of the prettiest churches in Louisiana. The interior renovation started by Rev. Father Neudlin in 1938 has been comp'eted by the present rector, Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. Plutz. RT. REV. C. VAN de VEN Nov. 30, 1904 - May 8, 1932 Rt. Rev. C. Van de Ven, before becom- ing bishop of Natchitoches, was pastor of Saint Joseph's Church in Baton Rouge. lt was during his pastorate in Baton Rouge that Bishop Van de Ven came to know and admire the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. When his Epis- copal See was moved from Natchi- toches to Alexandria, he became an almost daily visitor to the school and to the Brothers. The present school building was erected during his epis- copocy. -- RT. REV. A. DURIER Mar. 19, 1885 - Feb. 28, 1904 Rt. Rev. A. Durier was the bishop of the diocese when the Brothers of the Sacred Heart came to Alexandria to establish the first boys' school in Cen- tral Louisiana. On his arrival to dedi- cate the school on the second Sunday of September, 1893, he was met at the Union Station by Rev. Bro. Felix, Principal of the School's first faculty, which comprised Rev. Bros. Robert, German and Austin. 1 l so RT. REV. DANIEL F. DESMOND Jon. 5, 1933 Bishop Desmond hos evinced ci most keen interest in his cothedrcil porish boys' school since his orrivol in Alexondrio in 1933. During these post ten yeors Menord Memorial hos grown olmost to copclcity. The toculty hos been doubled ond the enrollment hos grown from 135 boys to 300. A source of much pride cind joy to our deor Bishop is the course in militory training which hos been inougurclted in the school. His Excellency witnessed our first dress pcirode of the yeor with our new rifles. GHANCERY QFFICE 1805 JACKSON AVENUE ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA March 14, l944. Rev. Brother Jerome Menard Memorial High School Alexandria, La. Dear Brother Jerome: The approach of the Golden Jubilee of the Menard School arouses my interest. Certainly these five decades have been Golden years. I am proud of the record. Menard School now, at this present moment, enjoys a very enviable standard. I am well informed as to the curric- ulum of the school and in particular of the spirit of scholastic endeavor which exists among our student body. It was indeed a happy arrangement to introduce the atmos- phere of the Military Campus into our school. The recent review which I made of our marching boys was a source of edification to me. It stands to reason that the introduction of the spirit of military discipline and the esprit de corps of a Military Unit is bound to rebound in a wholesome way to our student body. I am very hopeful that the oncoming years will record new triumphs for Menard not only in the field of business and the professions, but also in the ranks of our consecrated men in religion. Our hopes are high. We have every reason to expect that our boys will turn out to be a credit to their Homes, the Church and to our Country. Sincerely yours in Christ, 7L ,p ,,,,,,,g,,a i7.,UE.....,.x- Bishop of Alexandria. RT. REV. MONSIGNOR L. MENARD Pastor 1883-1912 lt was during the pastorate of Father Menard that the girls' and boys' schools ofthe parish were founded. We are proud of the fact that our school glori- ously bears the name ot this pioneer of Catholic education in north Louisiana. The little grade school of 1893 with an enrollment of fifty, has grown to be the largest Catholic high school for boys between Baton Rouge and St. Louis. May its growth ever spread luster on the name of its noble founder. RT. REV. MONSIGNOR J. PLUTZ Monsignor Plutz since his assignment as rector to the Cathedral Parish in l94O has taken a keen interest in Menard's every activity. Many improvements made in the school during the past three years have been financed by Mon- signor Plutz. During this past year Monsignor Plutz delivered several learned lectures to the high school department on the Orient and on the value of good reading. We are extremely grateful for his kindly efforts to help us build a greater Menard. Very Rev. Brother Albertinus, S.C., S.G. Rev Brother Lambert, S.C. Rev. This spirit embodies academic, phycisal and moral achievements. The results of our scholastic endeavors are the envy of the entire student body. We were con- spicuous for our lack of membership in the weekly Look-Out Club . Our physical attainments were climaxed in the intramural track meet. Our physical fitness was the result of pride and responsibility. We form the nucleus around which Menard's Athletic teams will revolve. lt is also with great pride that we recall the last dress parade. The flaw- less manner in which we conducted the final review gave us a confidence that should bring forth a more concrete and comprehensive military program. Our spiritual achievements were found in our Sodality activities. Every Catholic boy was a member. The bustling activity of our society was due to energetic manner in which our Junior officers entered into the spiritual work fostered by the confraternity. This is, in short, the reason why we Juniors claim to symbolize the spirit of Menard. This group of boys embody all that we have come to think of the American bay-character, competitive spirit, class honor, loyal- ty, scholastic alertness, and mischief. A large number of Sophomores belong to the Sodality, the Altar Boy Society and to the Band. The greater number of the class partakes in sports either on the Varsity or on the junior teams. Our class took second place in the intra-mural track meet, being outdone only by the Senior class. ln scholastic duties our officers are, in- deed, our leaders. Emeric Mayeux merited the medals for English and Algebra, Lionel Gravel was awarded the Perfect Attendance medal, Lee McHughes won the Religion award, and Pat Harrington received the honor medal in History. James Ketchum and Leon De Bellevue are the linguists of the class: they merited the Latin and Spanish medals respec- tively.2 Lee McHughes and James Ketchum were the Sophomore Honor Students for the year. 50121-IQMQRES BUDDY ACOSTA BLANCHARD ANDRIES HUEY ANDRIES HARRY BARKER SCOTT CAZES ANDREW CHAUDOIR KENNETH DAY , LEON DE BELLEVUE WESLEY DUKE JOHN GIVENS JOHN GREMILLION RICHARD HALL JACK HOLT ROGER JOHNS JAMES KETCHUM F l L I E WADE LABORDE VERNON LACOUR JAMES LOUGHRAN GEORGE MADDEN JAMES MADDEN RALPH MILLER PATRICK MORGAN DONALD NORMAN GERALD ROBICHEAUX BERT ROSS ALOYSIUS TREADWAY LAWRENCE WARNER HOWARD WOODWARD I JOHN WRIGHT RICHARD YANCY Missing from the pictures: JOSEPH DUFOUR GLENN GUILLET STEVE PANOS gud' di' ,...-wi' 4l l SOPI-IOIVIORES President Vice President Secretary Donald Schonfeld Aubrey Eskew Jules Davidson Missing from the picture Treasurer John Craig FRESI-IIVIEN CLASS OFFICERS We, the Freshman of Menard, do not wish to boast of our achievements. Newly arrived from the various grade schools of the city they soon adapted themselves with credit to the new routine of the school. Their military bearing, though at first somewhat shabby, soon elicited the praise of the older boys who had longer training in military science. Wholeheartedly they cooperated with all the activities of the school and they show signs of developing into a class of which Menard, in later years, will have no worries. The class officers proved themselves worthy of the confidence placed in them. Scholasticolly, this class was the tops, having consistently fourteen of its members on the honor roll. gli-e .ii . BROTHER PATRICK, sc., coach When Brother Patrick was assigned to Me- nard Memorial High School in August of l938, he was appointed varsity coach. Today he is looked upon as the veteran coach of Central Louisiana. The single wing with his special shift arrangement has become a.Menard Eagle trade mark. Each year he has endeavored to arrange a finer schedule. Today Menard plays the strongest teams in the Class A bracket. The big handicap which has faced Brother Patrick has been reserve material. His first elevens have gloriously battered all opponents, but, now, with a better than three hundred enrollment, he will be able to place on the .gridiron teams rich in reserves. Throughout the school year there is one diligent group of students who attain prominence by the merits of their scholastic achievements. These pupils, the Honor Students must have gained the Honor Roll for at least four of the first five terms. The Honor Roll, in turn, is merited by those boys who maintain a minimum of 85 percent in each of their subjects. Considering the requisites of this organization, we feel that each and every member should be justly proud of his standing. ETA SIGMA This honor fraternity was established at Menard Memorial High School , six years ago. To be a member of this fraternity a Senior, on graduating, must be in the upper third of his class in the total of honor points awarded. It was erected under that title by the late Bishop Van de Ven on September 27, l927, and affiliated to the Prima Primaria in Rome on October 26, of the same year. On December l l following, the first solemn reception of members took place in the Cathedral with Rev. Father C. l. Nuedling, the Pastor and Spirit- ual Director, officiating. Rev. Brother Edmund was the first Sodality Moderator. K- Since its erection, the Sodality of Menard has directed the youthful zest of its members to projects eminently Catholic and worthy of their efforts. The main objective of this organi- zation is to imbue the students with a solid love and intelligent, practice of their Faith, the prime reason for which they attend a Catholic school. Its projects and studies touch on all the aspects and the various environments of student life. The group activities it advocates tend to promote in the Sodalists a vital cooperative spirit which promises to make of them in, later life dynamic units in parochial circles. Furthermore, during this year an intense, per- sonal love of Christ has been insisted upon, through projects and religious activities proposed for individual practice. This should be, indeed, the ultimate goal of all Sodality work, for by it alone will our student organization be able to bloom forth, after graduation, in to fruits of intense personal piety and earnest Catholic Action. The Sodality Officers who have guided their companions during this year i943-44 in- clude: Patrick McCauley, Prefect, Kenneth Broussard, Vice-Prefect, Robert Neblett, Secre- tary, Kelly Betar, Treasurer. Outstanding projects of this year have been: Month of the Rosary featuring the Living Rosary, offering of Requiem Masses, with group attendance, for the repose of the souls of Msgr. Menard, Menard boys fallen in service of their country, and of former Sodalists, Catholic Press month featuring signed pledges of combatting indecent literature, the Len- ten Daily Six, Vocational instructions, and Student Retreat. TI-IE BAN The Menard High School Band has been in the developing stage for the past few years. Ai band is as strong as its weakest section and until this year the Menard Band possessed no bass section at all. Its trumpets and woodwind divisions were large and made up of musicians of fair ability with two or three members of outstanding calibre. This year's additions to the band consisted of two sousaphone players, two baritone players, a trombonist and a performer on the Alto Horn. This combination is the beginning of a fine bass section and as more players are added Menard will be able to boast ofa fine musical aggregation. The band played at most of the home football games this year, the humorous Jefferson- Jacksonian political rally held by the Hillcrest Addition citizens, two concerts at the U.S.O. for the Catholic Men's Dinner Club and the Knights of Columbus, the Armistice Day Parade, and all military reviews and parades staged by the Cadet Battalion. Prospects for next year seem bright and the Band should be a distinct assert to the school in a musical way from now on. BOY SCO -TS Troop 9, sponsored by our school, received its first charter in January, l9-40. This charter was presented to Brother Jerome, head of the sponsoring organization. Since the day of its formation the troop has proven itself to be one of the outstanding and ambitious groups in the Attakapas Coun- cil, Today the outfit is made up of fifty regis- tered scouts. Of this number there are two Eagle Scouts: Jules Davidson, and Le Doux Provosty, three Life Scouts, Four Star Scouts, Six First Class Scouts and Ten Second Class with the rest belonging to the Tenderfoot Class. For the past five years the Troop has been headed by Mr. E. L. Gremillion, who has de- voted himself untiringly- to the interests of the group. He is aided by Brother Francis, assist- ant Scoutmaster and a committee of five, Brother Jerome, Chairman, Rev. Father J. Gre- million, chaplain, Mr. Curry Broussard, treas- urer, Lionel Gravel, Sr., in charge of activities and Mr. Jules E. Davidson, advancement. The troop has been outstanding in two ac- tivities, recruiting new members, and for the past three years a record attendance at the Father-Son Banquet. X Meetings are held regularly each Thurs- day evening. These gatherings arelpeppy and enlivened by scoutcraft, games, quiz contests, military drills, patrol activities, etc. I Hikes are held frequently by the troop and a number of boys enjoy these trips into the woods where they have opportunity to put their craft into practice. Future prospects for the troop look bright. lts esprit de corps is high and the members have one main goal in mind. To keep Troop 9 the finest and liveliest in the Attakapas Council. Rev. Bro. We are proud of many things here at Menard, but the first at our joys is over the tact that The Master has been given by tar the jewel roon in our school, Few schools have a prettier or more elaborate dwelling place for the Lord at the l-louse, Many blessings have come to us during the past six years and we like to believe they have so come because when we planned our pro- gram of newness here our first thought was to rnalce the Master's room our school's prettiest. The Chapel Seen here is the new dormitory. It accommodates l9 boarders. This is the outstanding project of the Mothers' Club this year - the ladies have taken the responsibility on themselves. Furnished in beauty as well as comfort, it provides an ex- cellent exposure and view of the campus. Dormifory and Hall The halls at Menard have been renovated, and now present a pleasing appearance to visitors and students. The color scheme is carried out in white, cream, and tan. Another project of our Mothers' Club, in conjunction with the dormitory. . .ow 'T The Library The renovation at Menard this year comprised the erection of a new library. The increased enrollment necessitated the converting of the old library into a class room. The new library was built over the parlor. The old parlor had a 24 toot ceiling. A maple floor was extended out from the second floor and the wasted space lO feet above the parlor floor was converted into a library. The new library was partly furnished this year with new tables and chairs. Like our chapel it has the potentiality of being made into a jewel room. Congratulations rr vw rv We extend to the l944 graduating class of Menard Memorial High School our heartiest congratulations. lt is our sincere hope that they will prove faithful and loyal to the high principles they have received. May they soon find their places as leaders among the citizens of our community and become a credit to the city and the splendid institution from which they were graduated. City of Alexandria W. G.
