R3-1.1--F greefi1zg5.7 , 1941. gba .J46IZ6U Ji6UZ R600 V868 The Senior Class MEN!-XRD MEMORIAL I-HGH SCHOOL MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL PRESS ASSOCIATION 6 WZ iaryg Lite is packed so full of happenings - work, pleasures, joys and sorrows, that in a few years it would be easy for us to forget the things which, like ivy, seem to cling about our lives. We shall tuck away between your pages our treasured experiences, particularly our successes, our achievements, our victories, and the rnost dear friendships made during our years at Menard Memorial High School. i l Come with us through the two semesters of the scholastic year, the first beginning with September, the second, January and on until graduation in May. Take part in our classes, enjoy our socials, laugh with us at recreation, cheer with us at sports, and keep silence with us during our recollected moments - leisurely view these events that have given us so much happiness. Now, Diary, look and listen to our delightful story. 60 H26 602 who heads our peerless Athletic Association, proudly and gratefully we dedicate this pictorial account of our last year at Menard. It is to Mr. Ed. Cruse and his associates that we owe the continuation of major athletics at our schoolg to Mr. Cruse and his associates is due apprecia- tion for the magnificent equipment furnished our various organized teamsg to Mr. Cruse and his asso- ciates, too, we are greatly indebted for the courageous support and encouragement given to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in their efforts to maintain their half-cen- tury of outstanding service to the Catholic youth of Alexandria l Zami One, Qiary, Introducing you to our TEEICI-IERS STUDIES GRGHNIZATICDNS CLUBS SGCIALS wal! fo Me Qzcuffy. We all pay our morning respects to our Eucharistic Lord. Quite fre- quently at recess time, and after school, too, we visit Him l Whenever there's a controversy about the King's English, we, Seniors, consult Brother Jerome, our genial principal. ln Latin class, Father Conway, tries to pound the tive declensions into our heads. A weary task, but then, Diary, you know how Latin is l This year, Brother Carol, inaugurated a Public Speaking course. How do you like the first demonstration of choric speaking? These are times that try men's souls, and it you don't think explaining an algebra problem is soul-trying, you just have never been in one of Brother Patrick's math classes. OLD' GXQSSES Lord of all he surveys, Brother Firmin, the little dictator of the Commercial classes, smiles in approbation at the perfect rhythm of his star typists. Parlez vous francais, Diary? lNeither do wel, so guess you're not interested in this group. Even though Spanish has been introduced into the school, Brother Lionel ruled sway over a goodly number of budding Parisians. Ah, what memories, this scene provokes, - broken test tubes, spilled acid and unexpected explosions. lt took Brother Camille all year to teach us that hot Bunsen burners can't be picked up with bare hands, but we learnedl A book of verse beneath the bough, well not beneath a bough, but in the library. Some of the fullest and happiest hours at Menard were spent under Brother Malachy's paternal care. And when we Came to the end of a perfect day a teacher, counselor and friend was always ready to listen, sympathize and help .... . Sodafify Slfiqkfiqlzfs were many and varied this year, Diary. O accept, Heavenly Mother, our puny efforts to make our lives better, fuller, richer and more pleasing to Him! Yes, our Sodality record book is closed again for another year. Between its covers the skits, activities, meetings, conventions, all the little personal things we don't want to forget are written. Varied are the activities included in the past year's work, the distribu- tion of Catholic literature at the military camps, Christ- mas card sale, carol singing, baskets and toys for the poor, frequent visits, lenten drive, parties, little sacri- fices, First Fridays, Sodality Sundays, ..... The whole school-building has taken on a more refined atmosphere due to the generosity of these devoted ladies, when they footed the bill for a set of Venetian blinds for each window in the -school. Menardians frequently were afforded the rare opportunity of a home-cooked hot lunch right on the school grounds, this past yea r, and often had the privilege of being chaperoned by their dear mothers at their school socials. Diary, I could just go on and on about our great Mothers' Club, cake sales, rummage sales, the scout banquet, socials, improvements here and there . . . onli ou B0 V6 QJHJMLJZS Diary? Boy, we dol Unfortunately due to the graduation and auitation ot most ot last year's leading musicians we did not have the crack marching outfit of former years. Our band was slow in rounding to form. Just when things seemed to be taking shape, our band master, W. A. This year we had the added incentive of the pictured certificate to spur us on to greater efforts. We are proud of our little six-sheet tabloid, which finds its way into the homes of every boy at Menard. The generosity of our friends is not imposed upon because we publish THE EAGLE without the assistance of advertising. STAFF-EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT Pete Delaune, ,,,.,,,.. To be eligible a student must have merited an honor rating-at least eighty-tive per cent, in all sub- jects-tor three out ot the tirst tour school terms. This is not easy, Diary. The course ot study at our school has been made as strict and as hard as possible. Brother Jerome believes that first things come first, and we agree with him. Don't you, Diary? The crowning glory of a Menard graduate is to be admitted to the Mu Eta Sigma Honor Fraternity. A Menardian labors for this great distinction during his entire tour years in high school. Points are awarded for proficiency in schoolwork, participation in athletics, sodality work and all other extra-curricular activities. At the end of his senior year these points are tabulated. It the student is in the upper third of his class, he is given a gold pin, emblematic of his school spirit. MU ETA SIGMA H 6 l'6,UCll 6 Brother Carol, directing. Menard believes in preparing its students for an active citizen- ship, and we know of no better means than through the Boy Scout movement. Hence, under the spirited leadership of Mr. E. L. Gremillion, scout master, Troop 9 was organized last year. At present the troop flourishes. lt is one of the most active in the whole Attakapas Council area, as witnessed by the many calls rnade upon it this year, by the city of Alexandria: parades, football ushering, flag- raising, street patrol duty, etc. Menard's Scouts, Troop 9 opened National Scout Week with a pro gram over the local station KALB eaufy eiqm upreme at the Menard Spring Festival.
