" We, the students and faculty of Memphis University School ... " During one of the first assemblies of the new school year, Mr. Michael Gunn and Douglas Ray raise their right hands and repeat this line and the rest of the Student body Oath after Mr. Thorn. The student body and the faculty together promise to uphold the pledge; this promise by both groups is just another demonstration of the strong bond between students and teachers at MGS. V

The Road Of Honor ww P £ he long and winding road of honor sets MOS apart from all other schools. It ' s our duty to uphold the ninety-year- old tradition of the Honor Code. Not everybody has an honor system that protects him from lying, cheating, and stealing and that is maintained by the students for the students. It takes the whole school — seventh graders, eighth graders, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and faculty — to give meaning to the school ' s motto: Veritas Honorque (Truth and Honor). The Honor System means no locks on our lockers, free periods instead of study halls, unlocked classrooms, and leaving our books in the halls. But honor goes far beyond simply upholding the Honor System; it builds trust, understanding, and camaraderie among students and faculty alike. And it takes honor to complete the definition of the word " gentlemen " — which is what we all are from seventh grade orientation through senior graduation . . . and beyond. Proof that the Honor System works: students trust each other so much that they can leave their possessions — books, coats, whatever — in the halls without any fear of their disappearing. On a Friday just before assembly, Vere Jehl and Andy Cates greet each other and discuss what is happening over the weekend. The Honor System fosters an atmosphere of friendliness among not only students but also the faculty. ' A • ' -A
