Hurry up and wait Chop sticks Girls, Girls, Girls The DeSoto Beauty Review held excitement, glamor, and suspense. Over thirty girls vied for the honor of being the DeSoto Beauty Queen. They were judged in swimming suits, evening gowns, and for poise. Also they had to display some type of talent. Everybody was happy, some tired, and a few sad (there could only be one winner). Roses, smiles, tears overcame the excitement as the winner was announced. The pageantry of the evening was over but the thoughts of the contest still linger on. Smile, you may win the contest. 27

Time out for a Coke. Snow After the approach of the new year and the closing of the semester, the pangs of winter were felt in the cold, bitter snow of late January . . . Exams came and went (just like our grade point averages) ... At the hands of this wintry blast with the city at a virtual standstill, Memphis State stu- dents continued their quest for higher education . . . With dexedrine sales at a maximum and students ' morale at an ebb, the fall semester was ushered quietly out. Keep off the snow. 26 Bewitching hour had struck and not even the weather could keep us from it, finals.

Brubeck starts his progressive jazz. Golden notes of Jazz Our annual spring concert was held in Ellis Auditorium this year and featured the Dave Brubeck Quartet. For two hours he explored jazz from the Kansas City Blues to his own improvisations. Accompanying Dave, who was at the piano, were Paul Desmond on sax; Joe Morello on drums; and Gene Wright on bass.
