MIDDLEBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL MIDDLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS SENIORS INVOLVEMENT 4Pagel6? fa Table of Contents We, the different members of the Class of 1987, are as unique as each winter snowflake. It is this individuality that has brought us closer and has built a strong bond of friendship and camaraderie. Working together has not only helped us to fulfill goals, but inspired us to establish even greater ones. Together we have formed not just a graduating class, but the class of 1987. 3 This Yearbook is dedicated to Susan Antonelli 1969 1986 On October 12, 1986 the Class of 1987 suffered the tragic loss of a unique member. Although Sue was taken from us, she left us a great deal: Love, Laughter, Tears, Joy, Friendship, and Understanding. Now in our Senior year, as graduation approaches, we shall pause a moment to remember Sue. Although she cannot be with us at this time a part of Sue lives in the heart of every one of us. ST Dear Sue, Until We Meet Again, I guess I can only keep bottled up inside of me the things I ' ve wanted to say to you. Knowing that you have seen the face of God, I know you are very happy now. Even more so, because you are with Dad. You are not sad over the fact that I grieve very deeply because you realize life is temporary. While I was there, I lived with three different host families, and all of them added greatly to my ex- periences. They allowed me to travel with them on vacations, and enabl- ed me to see many of the sights and areas that the average tourist would never see. They gave me an inside look at what living in a farming pro- vince is like and helped me to realize what poverty is truly like for the people of those provinces. They also showed me the opposite side of the social pyramid by exposing me to luxuries that only the wealthiest people in the United States would have, such as maids and drivers. My Junior year was more memorable and educational than any other in my life and it is an experience that I will never forget. By spending a year in the Philippines, I was able to learn about another country and its culture by experiencing it first hand. I met some of the friendliest and most hospitable people I could ever hope to meet, and shared many wonderful times with them. Those are the times I will never forget. 39 MOST DRAMATIC Mark Edwards, Amy Delongchamps BEST DRESSED RP Cabral, Robin Michael MOST LAID BACK Kim Botelho, Rick Fuller MOST MECHANICAL Bryan Kinsman QUIETEST Anthony Norris, Gina Carrington MOST ARTISTIC Robin Swift, Bird Saunders, Jeff Verre WOkb i DRIVER Vicki Sabalewski, Brian Pierce MOST MASCULINE MOST FEMININE Garry Perry, Emily Gedraitis 40 MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Robyn Swift, Norm Ouellette MOST INTELLIGENT Glenn Amber, Amanda Bichsel DID MOST FOR CLASS Jackie Fuce, Mark Edwards FLIRT AND WOLF Robin Runci, Dave Muirhead BEST DRIVERS Meg Carroll, Todd Roach CUTEST COUPLE Courtney Thomas, Jim Yeskiewicz MOST ATHLETIC RP Cabral, Brenda Benson MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Mark Edwards, Amanda Bichsel 41 BEST SMILE Mark Goss, Robin Michael s s i r . 1 MOST OPEN MINDED Brenda Sweeney, Mark Edwards, Robin Michael BEST FRIENDS Tracy Bower, Wendy Colucci i LEAST SCHOOL SPIRITED Kim Zantrofski, Jim Hamton BEST LOOKING Brenda Sweeney, Eric Thorson 5 CLASS PARTIERS Bird Saunders, Kim Botelho BEST NATURED Jackie Fuce, Dave Lennon CLASS RIVALS RP Cabral, Eric Thorson CLASS WIT Sam Webb, David Muirhead CUTEST Bill Picone, Lori Neilson LOUDEST Ed Gomes, Sam Webb BEST FRIENDS MOST MUSICAL Diana Judd, Jim Yeskewicz MOST SERIOUS Kim Crest, Bill Murdoch BEST FRIENDS: Garry Perry, Rick Fuller MOST GENEROUS: Tim Viega, Vickie Sabalewski MOST GENEROUS 43 The Class of 1987 REMEMBERS WHEN VS called Mrs. Oliver a Goober AB ran her 880 barefoot JH, TB, JV, and EG stole the unstealable 190 pound pumpkin MH lost her contact at Field Hockey practice Mrs. Hughes dried up the Bio II frogs Freshman Bio I term papers KH, KG, RC, JC, ET, MK all played poker on the way to Acadia The Junior-Senior egg fight 10 31 86 AB got hit by a ski lift KL and JM went to school on a snow day Amy told her stories on the way to LeBaron Flea rode her bide into MTC at the car wash The Pink People There were water fights in Washington THE CHALLENGE: Dominos Pizza being delivered to Best Western The waterfall in the lobby RC jumped off a cliff at Acadia JM, KL,and RS left school to see the Celtic Pride parade BS wore leather pants to school Mrs. Freitas almost got hit in the face with the puck We had silent lunch in the eighth grade The raw meat was served at the prom Photo club met in the eighth grade Miss Jenness fought JO for her book Adam couldn ' t speak English The food fight broke out at McDonalds All the girls loved Shawn Cassidy We loved video games Mark was tour guide for a day TC fell on the ice and lost her memory for 45 minutes The Bio II class received coloring books . . . with their names already on the bindings Freshman year, Vicky S scored a basket for the wrong team LW lost her pants at a Basketball game The MHS streakers appeared SW will always remember the good times with ML Garry Perry ' s coconuts in 8th Grade South Pacific We all learned to play Hot Cross Buns on our recorders in the eighth grade Vicky and Lynn broke a chair the first night in Paris Kelly D got frisked in the FBI Building Rennee and Sherri were the last two babies, Period 7 Halloween day Micki Mouse was in Mik K ' s car JH and RM fried an egg on the radiator of MK ' s car Remember hacky-balloon in Room 302 in DC EG didn ' t XYZ ? RL and SW 59 62 Group of MHS Students Visits France On April 17, 1986, twelve Middleborough High School French students and three chaperones left Boston ' s Logan Airport for Paris, France. We anx- iously boarded our plane and settled in for an almost eight-hour flight to Brussels and a two-hour bus ride to Paris. Once in Paris, we experienced a bit of culture shock and a lot of jet lag but we still managed to see some sights before collapsing in bed. In just seven days we saw many major tourist attractions in- cluding the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Palace of Versailles. We also managed to shop and eat our way through the city. It was a wonderful ex- perience that hopefully will serve to pave the way for other students who desire to see a different country and develop a better understanding of another culture. Those participating in last year ' s trip were Carrie Albert, Glenn Amber, Michele Bernier, Meg Carroll, Ruth Cushing, Marianne Finn, David Hilton, Stacy Jurgelewicz, Avril Levesque, Leslie Neilson, Vicki Sabalewski, and Lynn Washburn. Special thanks to our chaperones Mr. and Mrs. Oliver and Mr. Mac- Donald for making this experience possible. 64 bear Students, My name is Birgit Meyen. I don ' t know if you ' ll member me, but I want to tell you a little bit about my ountry and my experiences during my year at Micf- eborough High School. One thing you should know is lat West Germany is a democracy that is ruled by a overnment that is built out of a lot of political parties. Our ray of life doesn ' t differ from yours; we live in houses nthout as many TV sets, but we do have McDonalds and opcorn. My family lives in a suburb of Hamburg named orderstedt. Norderstedt has the same population as pston. So you can understand that it was a big change to ove from a city to the boonies . But I like Mid- eborough. Everybody knows everybody. If you walk rough the streets uptown, you know almost everybody or least their faces. It gave me a warm feeling and when we ime from a trip back to Middleborough, I could say I ' m ome . I still remember my first day of school, how scared I was to meet you guys. Now I know how unreasonable it was. You were all so friendly to me, helped me when I lost my way and you were always there when I needed somebody. I never felt alone. And because of that I want to say thank you and want to give you a big hug! When I go back to Germany I still have three more years of school, because I have to make up my Junior year again, attend my Senior year and another, 13th year. After this I would like to go to college and study medicine to be a doc- tor for animals. Maybe a long time will pass before I see you again, but you ' ll always be in my memory. Before I came to Mid- dleborough, you were just Americans for me but now I can say you are my friends and that ' s a great feeling. And who forgets his friends? I wish you all good luck for your life and if sometimes something goes wrong I ' ll send a little sun- shine from Germany to you wherever you are! For me, all of you are number 1. Love, Birgit Birgit Home in Germany Bente — Then and Now Heisan! Let me try to tell about myself and how it is to be an ex- change student. Most of you know that I am from Norway, a country in Scandinavia. Everybody thinks Norway is in Sweden, but Norway and Sweden are two separated coun- tries. In Norway we have our own language, Norwegian. We actually have two written languages, and a lot of dialects. I have always had a dream of being an exchange student in the USA, so I was all excited when I got the call from the chairman of the Voss Rotary Club. Voss is my hometown; it is a small town in the west of Norway. It is close to Bergen, which is Norway ' s second largest city. Voss is about the size of Middleborough. It is surrounded by high mountains where we go skiing in the winter. Voss has hosted many world cup skiing events. The school system in Norway is really dif- ferent from here. After the 9th grade, we are all done, but almost everyone applies to another school for further education. Our high school, which is grades 10, 11, and 12, is not required. I graduated from high school last year. In Norway, I used to take dance lessons; this year I take dance at Sherry Gold ' s. I play the piano and the flute. In the winter I often go downhill skiing. Awesome! I am really glad that I came to MHS as an ex- change student. I stay with the Paolella family; they are really nice. I have met a lot of people, played on the Girl ' s Soccer team, and been in the musical South Pacific. I have plans on traveling while I am here. So far I have enjoyed my stay here, and I am sure I will enjoy it the rest of the time also. I would like to thank all of you that made my stay happy. I know I am going to miss all of you guys when I have to go back to Norway. Let ' s hope that we will always be friends and stay in touch. With Norwegian love, Bente!!! 67 WILLIAM S. WASSEL Principal DR. LINCOLN D. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1987, It is the sincere wish of all of us at M.H.S. that each of you realize your dreams as you leave us to con- tinue your lives. We hope that you feel that the years you spent with us have helped prepare you for the future. The education you received is but a working tool which is now about to be put to the test. The path you take, the strength you develop, and the service you perform will be the true in- dicators of your character. Good luck to each of you. The Class of 1987 has been an excellent class from the very first day you entered our school as freshmen. May you be a credit to your family, our school and our community. Oh to be a song, so full of joy Its melody would sound from Pole to Pole To lift the burden from each aching beat And comfort every sad, bewildered soul. Oh to be a poem, to be read In every land where human speech is heard. An epic of such grand heroic strength That youth to nobler living would be stirred. Life is a song, a poem If we will but make it so. Whether it reaches many or but the few — who knows? Though it be sad or joyous Filled with delight or tears Still shall its hopeful message Echo down the years. Sincerely, Lincoln D. Lynch, D.Ed. William S. FOOTBALL After attending a rigorous training camp in August, the 1986 Sachem Football team was definitely prepared to improve on last year ' s incon- sistent performance. The ' 86 season got off to an uneasy start as the Sachems tied Wareham in their season opener, but all doubt was erased when they went on to win their next five games. The only loss the Sachems suf- fered all season was a disappointing 15-12 upset loss to Rockland in game seven. The Sachems bounced back spectacularly by winning their next three games. This year ' s team was able to defeat such powers as the Whitman- Hanson Panthers and the East Bridgewater Vikings. Our final record was an excellent 8-1-1 and we are the 1986 South Shore League Large School Division champions. Each member of the squad contributed greatly both with physical and moral support. There were several first year team members who filled the openings left by last year ' s Seniors and proved to be future contenders in their individual weight classes. Although Seniors Bird Saunders, Peter Falconeiri, and Craig Ryan will be missed greatly, there are several retur- ning Varsity and JV Wrestlers. When play season comes you get to know everyone in the choir pretty well, and you work together as a team. Even though most people hate all the rehearsals, when the time comes to perform everyone comes together and works as a team. When you are a senior, you realize that you are not going to be part of that team next year, and it makes you feel sad about all the friends you are going to leave behind. The musicals that we do here are really fun, because we are all working for the same goal. That goal is to perform the best musical the audience has ever seen. by Tammy Foye SEMSBA BAND Row 1: J. There are lot of in- teresting things that are fun to do and you can learn about the arts, improvisation, and mime. Every year, there is a trip to Boston when we attend a profes- sional theatrical production. Every year, Speech and Theatre presents a play. This year ' s production was All My Sons , which is pictured on this page. Everyone who does the play does a great job. People who are involved in theatre groups have said that the kids involved in Speech and Theatre will make great professionals if they stay with it. In this group, you can be yourself even if it ' s a little crazy. Most of all, it ' s a lot of fun. by Sherrilee Bearse Jeff Perry ' Now you listen here Bucko. To generalize the meaning of an organization, we can state: An organization is a group of individuals working together toward a common goal. This is DECA. We have quickly learned that to reach, strive for, and set goals, one must overcome fears. DECA helped us to do this by showing us how to recognize and then conquer fears. DECA is nationwide. All over the country, DECA members and chapters strive for excellence. They ' re rewarded for their efforts at the National Career Development Conference where they ' re given a chance to meet others from every state in America, and to learn about many different lifestyles and cultures. The basis of the class deals with script writing, camera work, acting, lighting, sound, and graphics. The class is limited in size (under ten) in order to keep everyone busy. The main objective of Media Technology is to produce programs for Continental Cablevision, providing work experience and many studio hours. Each person has written several scripts and these will be used in a bimonthly news and entertainment show called Larry ' s Corner . Senior members of the class include Jim Hampton, Wil Selzer, Miki Kerrigan, Tara O ' Callaghan, Emily Gedraitis, Jess MacLellan, and Dee Sylvia. Shane Doyle and Christine Deefe are also in the class. Anyone interested in any aspect of the com- munications field should consider Mr. Hilsabeck ' s Media Technology class. CRANSTON, RI (401) 781-1700 167 For the Class of 1987 Graduation marks a milestone in our lives. The event marks not a time of separation but a time of transition. The common nexus that has kept this class together will not break, but will instead mature. Our shared amity and respect must not be left behind at high school. Such ideals can only be of value in the times to come. We have learned far more than we think here in the hallowed halls of Middleborough High. A retrospec- tive look back will prove this. Congratulations. Be Careful. Strive to be happy. 168 I
