Frequently I have the opportunity to talk to students, par- ents, teachers, and just plain citizens. They all agree that Melrose High School has a spirit which enables all here to rise to their greatest potential whether that he in aca- demic or athletic pursuits; in spite of obstacles that would daunt others of less stern will. The other day a teacher told me, Sometimes I come to school not feeling too well or rested, perhaps not well enough really to be in school. By the end of the first period with the students I’ve forgotten my tiredness and feel well.” How can this happen and happen to so many others so often? The answer is complex, hut part of it lies in the posi- tive attitudes students and teachers have for themselves and for each other. It is wonderful to observe hut even greater to share. As we go into our future lives in unimaginable places, we can reach our finest hours by carrying this spirit with us into all our endeavors to share with others. No greater gift can we make to life. We, the class of 1973, dedicate our Log to Mr. William Hanlon for his many years of devoted service to Melrose High. After graduating from Dartmouth and receiving his master’s at Boston University, Mr. Hanlon went on to graduate work at Tufts and Lowell Tech. Mr. Hanlon started his teaching career in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He then taught at Keene, New Hampshire, Beverly and Reading before coming to Melrose. Besides teaching for twelve consecutive years, Mr. Hanlon was advisor to the Log staff. Until 1971 he was chaperone to the Junior Class trip to Wash- ington, D.C. Mr. Hanlon has given twelve years of service to M.H.S. and his students have come to know him not only as a teacher but also as a friend. 15
