After graduating from Dartmouth and receiving his master’s at Boston University, Mr. Hanlon went on to graduate work at Tufts and Lowell Tech. Mr. Hanlon started his teaching career in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He then taught at Keene, New Hampshire, Beverly and Reading before coming to Melrose. Besides teaching for twelve consecutive years, Mr. Hanlon was advisor to the Log staff. Until 1971 he was chaperone to the Junior Class trip to Wash- ington, D.C. Mr. Hanlon has given twelve years of service to M.H.S. and his students have come to know him not only as a teacher but also as a friend. 15 Frequently I have the opportunity to talk to students, par- ents, teachers, and just plain citizens. They all agree that Melrose High School has a spirit which enables all here to rise to their greatest potential whether that he in aca- demic or athletic pursuits; in spite of obstacles that would daunt others of less stern will. The other day a teacher told me, Sometimes I come to school not feeling too well or rested, perhaps not well enough really to be in school. By the end of the first period with the students I’ve forgotten my tiredness and feel well.” How can this happen and happen to so many others so often? The answer is complex, hut part of it lies in the posi- tive attitudes students and teachers have for themselves and for each other. It is wonderful to observe hut even greater to share. As we go into our future lives in unimaginable places, we can reach our finest hours by carrying this spirit with us into all our endeavors to share with others. No greater gift can we make to life. During our years at Melrose High, we have come in contact with many teachers. Some have encouraged us; others have bored us to infinity. (Remember the one in room ) But it works both ways. We were just as exasperating to these same teachers. As we leave, we cannot help but remember: They’re there when you need them; They ' re there when you don’t! M. Nuzzo, A. Donahue, S. Tine, J. William Donohue PresidetU Lisa Wells Secretary Senior Class Officers Paul D, Shea Vice President Diane Sullivan Treasurer Student Government The Melrose High School Student Congress was off to a quick start this year, losing no time in electing new officers. Taking the helm as President was Thomas Garden. Tom had previously given service to M.H.S. as president of the Class of 73 for three years. Holding the number two position was Louis Alfano with Janice Chasse as Secretary. The Congress took on an active role in student affairs, holding many more meetings than had been the custom in past years. Among some of the proposals discussed that would directly affect the Congress was one that called for the establishment of a bicameral body of government patterned after the federal system. Some felt t hat the present form was ineffective. Once again, the annual College Career Night, with M.H.S. alumnae acting as the spokesmen, was coordi- nated by the Congress. It’s main objective was to present a better idea of what various colleges had to offer. The M.H.S. Student Council consists of the officers of each class. There were some newcomers to the Coun- cil as all of the officers from the Class of ’73 scored outstanding victories over their opponents, many of whom had held their position for as long as three years. Among the credits of the Council are the Works” rock concert and the Winter Ball held at Mount Hood Coun- try Club. The Student Advisory Committee is a board consisting of five members, four of them from the senior class and one from the junior class. The board meets bimonthly with the School Committee. The function of the board is to make policy recommendations to the School Com- mittee. Areas of recommendation include the summer school program curriculum, student activities, and stu- dent rights. This year the board has been successful in obtaining subsidization of various student activities. The Student Faculty Advisory Board is the only governing body at M.H.S. composed of both faculty and students. The board holds meetings twice monthly. Its purpose is to explore current issues and problems affect- ing the High School Community and forwarding result- ing recommendations to the Principal of the High School” (SFAB Constitution). Throughout the year all of these student bodies have been active in student government at M.H.S. JUNIOR OFFICERS K. Youland, Secretary, S. Clifford, Vice President-, N. Waka, Presi- dent-, L. And by the time the fourth day rolled around that plant was a mother tree. And on the fifth day the Junior High kids chopped the tree down. And finally on the seventh day the seniors rested, looked at their new Logs, and burned them. The Staffs Business Staff S. Peters, D. MacLeod, C. Corcoran, R. Cincotta, M. Maclachlan. Loose-Ends LOOSE-ENDS, the high school literary magazine, allows stu- dents to exercise their imaginative and creative abilities. LOOSE- ENDS reflects our efforts to find answers to the perplexing ques- tions of life, while at the same time it serves as an outlet to express our hopes and dreams. It provides students wdth the op- portunity to share their feelings and philosophies. Each story or poem in this year’s LOOSE-ENDS represents a student’s at- tempt to express himself in a unique way. 38 . «r ! Our well-known newspaper, the Imprint, has been and will continue to be a great asset to our school. Un- der the advisorship of Mrs. Keefe, editor-in-chief Naomi Waka and her talented staff have made this year’s Imprint excellent. Many students contribute their feelings and views to the Imprint and help to make it a good paper. At the beginning of the year the staff had a very success- ful book fair in the library. During the year. Party Tully runs a book store, through which students may order books. All through the year, the Imprint has made a strong effort to bring itself and M.H.S. a little closer to the individual student. 40 Sitting: M. Hannigan, P. Tully. Standing: N. Waka, K. Gadway, J. Under the direc- tion of Mrs. Allen and Miss Donohue, the club is designed for the enjoyment and en- richment of the French students. The first group acitivity was a dinner at Mark Hor- mell ' s house. This was very successful, complete with coq au vin and vichysoisse. At the beginning of the year, some of the students went to the World Wide Celebration in Boston and thoroughly enjoyed it. In view of the obvious interest this year, the French Club should continue to be active and popular at M.H.S. First Row: K. Amirault, M. Shea, C. Miller, P. Tully, A. Allen Advisor, J. Dinarello, D. With such enthusiasm the Spanish Club will certainly live on. 43 Italian Club The Italian Club was formed this year as an opportunity for first and second year Italian students to study and partake in the Italian language and culture. The club had a luncheon in Boston in October and a trip in December to the Don Orion home for senior citizens of Italian background. There they sang Christmas carols in Italian and English. The trip was followed by a party at a member’s house. In the planning stages are a dinner, a dance at an Italian club in Everett, an Italian movie, and a speaker from Italy. First Row: E. The Distributive Education Clubs of America enable interested students to perform transactions similar to those which are found in the business world today — retailing, wholesaling, or service. D.E.C.A. is a nationwide organization, and Melrose is proud to be among its members. Ecology Club came into existence this year under the direction of Mrs. Hajac, Miss Packer, and Mr. Morrison. This club was formed by 10 ecologically- minded students who are interested in all environ- mental aspects of Melrose and the surrounding areas. Besides their weekly meetings, the Ecology Club has been writing newspaper articles to inform fellow stu- dents, and other active citizens, about the various ecological problems of our community. The credit belongs to our new and de- voted director Mr. Bashford, student leaders Cyndi Chadwick and Peter Wentworth, and of course the members, including several junior high students. The Band played well at our varsity football games, Christmas Vespers, parades and concerts. The Band is a dedicated group of musicians and will always be high on a list of popular clubs at MHS. 1 1 Jy jHH 1 Sitting: J. McGourty, L. Humes, P. Hearne, R. Pigeon, P. Lounbury, A. Briggs, S. PEP CLUB For three years now we have been enjoying the efforts of an active and creative Pep Club. Its aims have grown until its members now ' try to support all M.H.S. teams with anything from rallies to fan mail to a banquet. Though the Boston Globe assured us that the term school spirit draws no snickers, (RAH) it was a battle to stimulate in- terest with the undermining apathy of our peers. The Pep Club efforts did amazing things for the support of all M.H.S. games and meets and matches, not to mention what they did for the cafeteria walls! G. A. A. The Girls’ Athletic Association continues to be the larg- est club in the High School. This worthwhile organization sponsors all girls’ sports. It organizes various sports compe- titions during activity periods for those interested in par- ticipating. G.A.A. also awards a scholarship to a worthy senior with the profits from its fall and spring candy sales. In February the organization holds a student-faculty volley- ball game which is enjoyed by all. The year’s activities are wrapped up with a banquet which gives recognition for outstanding service, sportsmanship, and athletic ability. Officers: C. Cincotta, L. Toney, M. Awiszus, L. Kiddie, M. How often did you see so many coordinated people seated together in one picture? These seniors are chosen because of their athletic ability. They assist the gym teachers with all classes and set ex- amples for their friends. r Majorettes Much improved from last year, the 73 Majorette squad was let by co-heads Chris Rogers and Linda Brown. Nine of the ten girl on the squad had previous experience. In order to provide the half time entertainment for each game, they practiced tirelessly ever afternoon. This year the majorettes also entered in competition witl surrounding schools. In conjuction with the cheerleaders, the girl planned and held a number of rousing rallies. The race went right down to the wire, with a smashing win over Wakefield on Turkey Day being the deciding factor. They had to settle for a co-championship with the Stoneham, team, how- ever. Melrose was definitely a running team, with Jay Hickey a league leader in points and yardage setting the pace. The team, hampered often with injuries, had to do a lot of shifting in the quarterback position. Coach Hoague fortunately was able to see the plays and put in a winning com- bination. First Row: R. ' The back- j bone of the team will be departing with this year’s graduating class. | Mr. Grant is counting on the underclassmen to bridge the gap. fl Due to the new design in pools, records have been falling. The high- 1 light of the year was the constant duel between Captain Dick Devine I and Fred Saunders in the 200 and 400 yard events w ' ith the latter com- 4 ing out on top. tj Our best wishes to Coach Grant for more wdnning seasons! Co-Captains Louis Scibelli and Richard Spa taro headed the team, keeping the enthusiasm high. Though the team did not make it to the States, the players displayed their talent. High scorers of the season w ' ere Ron LaVita, Louis Scibelli, and John Slattery. The junior varsity bas- ketball team finished their season with a record of 3-15. Their marvelous spirit helped to make a great season. The Raiders are a tightly knit group and put forth a good team effort. They are looking for- ward to next year’s season. Basketball This year’s Girls’ Basketball team had a disappointing season, with a final record of 3-6. Under the di- rection of Coach Chase and tri- captains Glenda Campbell, Cindi Chadwick, and Linda Toney, the team kept up their enthusiasm and sense of unity. High scorers throughout the season were seniors Glenda Campbell, Cindi Chadwick and junior Mamie Reardon. The Junior Varsity team had a good season, ending with a record of 6-3. Led by Captain Judy Wen- ner, the team’s enthusiasm and spirit brought them their wins. Martha Awiszus, Kathy Slattery and Judy Wenner were high scorers for the JV team. The Raiderettes have high hopes of a better season next year. VARSITY First Row: Tri-Captains C. Chadwick, G. Campbell, L. Toney. Sec- ond Row: Coach Chase, T. Paleo, M. Reardon, M. Blaney, S. With Mrs. Taffe as coach, the girls showed remarkable improve- ment in their routines. The gymnasts under Captain Cor- coran had some resounding victories over such highly re- garded teams as Stoneham, Belmont, Woburn, and Wa- tertown. Still fairly new on the M.H.S. athletics’ roster, the three year old gymnastics team proved to be a chal- lenging rival for any school. 92 Hockey The Melrose High Hockey team, under the coaching of Mr. Hughes, won the Middlesex League Championship for the sec- ond consecutive year. Their season ended with a 17-1-0 record. Barney Cook broke the scoring record of 51 points, setting the new record of 60 points. The M.H.S. team features the best defensemen in the state, Tim Burke and Andy Benson. Bob Lloyd was the team’s outstanding goalie. Due to questionable calls in the Winchester game, Melrose lost second place to the Winchester team. They have soared from a minus 500 record to an honorable second place (topped only by Wakefield, a consistently strong competitor). Claudia Graham, alias IBBA, has given our harriers the distinction of being the first club in the state to have a girl com- peting regularly. With many seniors graduating in June, we hope that the outstanding rookies can guide next year ' s team to a league crown. This w ' as Bob McIntyre’s first year as head coach of cross country. His spirit and keen insight have given our M.H.S. runners a new respect. Well done. Coach Mac! One amidst multitudes of . blades of grass? Solitary ay? yet, riot alone! Just a reminder: To keep the Class of 1973 together for future reunions, please drop a note to the main office of Melrose High if you should have a change of name or address in the years to come. Thank you. The officers of the Class of 1973 Joseph Bowman Leland Chick Douglas Comeau Jonathan Diltz Elio Disano Michael Dotoli Edward Farnsworth Annmarie Flynn Patricia Hayes Linnet Lockhart Cathy Menadue Dorothy Mugherini Thomas Murphy Deborah Nunley William Reagan William Reardon Kenneth Storti Lisa Tully Go placidly amid the noise and haste, remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind to what virtue there is. Many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical of love; for in the face of all audity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the council of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nuture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not disturb yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labors and aspira- tions, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.
