Ancient peoples worshipped it. Ancient civilizations governed their very | existence according to its phases, as they tried to learn its secrets. They longed to reach out, to comprehend, the mysterious ball of silver and gold. ■ ;V 5 •• ' : L : ' .»• ’ , . • i,;. . , Today, the moon has become the physical manifesta- tion of a wider search, a search for understanding of ourselves , a search for a better life. As man, through the astronauts, reached out to touch the moon, the world — our world — came together for a few brief moment; to challenge, to meet a new destiny. After grc ».!, i, we too shall meet a new destiny; we shall begin c; - quest for knowledge and for understand- ing of ourselves. Each of us must attempt to ameliorate his environment — to search for a better life. Yet, one might ask, what is the value of reachin ° Is it worth the risks and disappointments? As we search the heavens to realize our dreams, we must each not forget the individual challenge of life here on earth: T he world stands out on either side No wider than the heart is wide; Above the world is stretched the sky, No higher than the soul is high. Promise is a part of it. It is there when a small child rubs his eyes to greet a new world and a new beginning. It is there when a crack is seen in the wall of prejudice. There, as a foot finds the ladder leading from despair. It is there in today’s history, hidden in the bold words — tear, corruption, hate, riot, bigotry, greed. Promise is there. It is there in America, confident and proud. Landing the first man on the moon — one small step, the promise of a giant step for all mankind. For one brief moment all men everywhere were breathless with hope and expectancy. Y ou are a part of all this, the promise for the future, not only in the quest for scientific truth and knowledge but for a better life on this small planet, for all mankind. It is a great and fearful time to be young and to be alive. But it is a time filled with excitement and challenge to men of good will everywhere. It is truly a time of com- mencement, and a promise of fulfillment. Your education which began here is a continuous thing. It is growth, growth reflected in the quality and character of your living, not just today — but on into the future.
