THE GRADUATING CLASS of MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL presents I table of contents faculty seniors who s who organizations 97 highlights 127 sports 139 m.h.s. — this is your life . . 161 advertisements 171 Promise is a part of it. It is there when a small child rubs his eyes to greet a new world and a new beginning. It is there when a_ crack is seen in the wall of prejudice. There, as a foot finds the ladder leading from despair. It is there in today’s history, hidden in the bold words — tear, corruption, hate, riot, bigotry, greed. Promise is there. It is there in America, confident and proud. Landing the first man on the moon — one small step, the promise of a giant step for all mankind. For one brief moment all men everywhere were breathless with hope and expectancy. Y ou are a part of all this, the promise for the future, not only in the quest for scientific truth and knowledge but for a better life on this small planet, for all mankind. It is a great and fearful time to be young and to be alive. But it is a time filled with excitement and challenge to men of good will everywhere. It is truly a time of com- mencement, and a promise of fulfillment. Your education which began here is a continuous thing. It is growth, growth reflected in the quality and character of your living, not just today — but on into the future. • : ' ' 1 ■ . vv ' : j ‘i ' ; - . j • •. ! f : it ; ,:v : h : • ... As man, through the astronauts, reached out to touch the moon, the world — our world — came together for a few brief moment; to challenge, to meet a new destiny. After grc .!, i, we too shall meet a new destiny; we shall begin c; - quest for knowledge and for understand- ing of ourselves. Each of us must attempt to ameliorate his environment — to search for a better life. Yet, one might ask, what is the value of reachin ° Is it worth the risks and disappointments? As we search the heavens to realize our dreams, we must each not forget the individual challenge of life here on earth: T he world stands out on either side No wider than the heart is wide; Above the world is stretched the sky, No higher than the soul is high. Finally Freshmen in high school. Remember that first day? What’s A Block?” How do l get to the boys’ gym?” I can’t find that eleva- vator!” We’ve come a long way since then. That first year was a winning one. The Raiders and the Reading Rockets were co-champs in Middlesex League Football and our basketball team became state champs! The undefeated M.H.S. Hockey Team captured the league title for the third year in a row. In its first year in the league, our Wrestling Team fought its way to first place. The Spring Track Team ran away with the State Tournament and placed second in the New Englands.” Even our golf team was undefeated, and the Debate Team won the State T ournament and competed in the Nationals. The newly formed French, Spanish Auto and Biology Clubs and the new student literary maga- zine, The Thistle enabled more of us to pursue ou r individual interests in extra- curricular activities. Returning to M.H.S. as sophisticated” sophomores we saw the formation of several new organizations — a Swim Team and the English History • and Pal Clubs. Pennant fever swept through the school as the Red Sox competed in the World Series. That was the year of The Great Walkout” which resulted in our hearingi?) the Series piped over the loudspeakers — Squeak! Many M.H.S. artists were winners in the Boston Globe Art Fair. Once again, we watched the Hockey and Wrestling Teams become the league champions. The Winter Tracksters won the Class B and B.A.A. titles. 84 In our junior year, the administration introduced a new schedule — the Roll- On Program — which granted us privilege periods ( the privilege being to sleep late in the morning or to leave school early in the afternoon). Students re- sponded enthusiastically to the initiation of a Soccer Team. Our athletes staged repeat performances of the last year ' s feats. For the third straight year, the M.H.S. mat men won the league title in wrestling! The pucksters clinched the league hockey title for the fifth year in a row! The Winter Track Team suc- cessfully defended the B.A.A. title. During the winter we suffered through co-ed classes in square dancing {or was it squares ” dancing?) and the usual lunchtime bomb scares. Remember how the once hot lunch tasted afterwards? Remember how embarrassing it was shivering in the snow in a gymsuit? In the spring, Stephen Lamson and Mitchell Tow were elected to represent our class and M.H.S. at Boys’ State, and Patricia Taaffe at Girls’ State. Our senior year brought an unexpected surprise. T o the dismay of the boys on ” The Wall” and in the lunchroom, the dress code was revised, permitting girls to wear slacks. In October, we observed Moratorium Day. Students wore black arm bands, discussed the Vietnamese War in classes, and attended an assembly featuring guest speaker Reverend Burkhart . . . Peace! We were proud to have four National Merit Semi-Finalists — Catherine Downes, Warren Graham, Alan Lakin, and Douglas McCrae — and four recipients of Letters of Commendation — Linda Butler, Irene Mrose, Lee Nyquist, and Robert Savage. Girls’ athletic teams have always been a credit to our school for exhibiting good sportsmanship. The Girls’ Field Hockey Team had an undefeated season. We will always remember the fun we had at the Powder Puff football game, when Holland’s Tulips defeated McHale’s Marauder’s 8-0. The ”, handsome ” players and beautiful” cheerleaders were hilarious. We look back upon the four years of trial, success, and disillusionment, but we still remember the fun of it all. In June, 1970 we reached the end of our journey and found ourselves eager to begin the next. Our four years at M.H.S. have been one great leap into adulthood, but just a small step into our own future. 85 SMAST ST JXJL k W ■irty wrose- K) IgJcm MGSt ©tGKlFlE I OACV) jfcccwvv CLASS’ c+if rr-E B(K «fe T, • r ip • V - . ALL THE GNUS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT IMPRINT Editors 100 Welcome to the Imprint Office, home of study hall escapees (otherwise known as editors and reporters). Led by Fearless Leader Mrs. Rosberg, with co-editors Irene Mrose and Paul Lepere, the energetic staff worked diligently to put together ten issues of the indispensible Imprint. The Imprint specializes in feature journalism, and this year it has been moving beyond the realm of school news to cover community issues. Every three weeks the Imprint Office reached a state of frenzied confusion as a new issue loomed ahead. Reporters rushed to meet deadlines, so that articles could be edited (but who edits the editors?), typed, sent to the printers, returned for layouts, sent back for the final printing, and returned at last for sale to loyal readers in the cafeteria. As a wise sign in the Imprint Office reads: If you can keep your head in all this confusion, you don’t understand the situation.” IMPRINT First Row. Mrs. Rosberg (advisor), L. Lanzillo, M. Students who earn grades that place them on the honor or high school rolls are members of the Honor Society. Each inducted member wears a gold M and receives a pass to the school library which may be used at any time. This year, the Society formed four committees: Issues, Activities, Induction-Ritual, and Fund Raising. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Grant, Mrs. Schooley, and Miss Blan- chard, the Society held its annual trip to the Pops, and at the induction in November Mayor Thomas Sullivan was the guest speaker. Football, hockey, basketball (sometimes even soccer and field hockey!) — the cheerleaders are there, backing up the teams and cheering them on to victory after victory. This year’s squad was captained by Kris Kotowski and advised by Mrs. Kearn and Miss Wragg. They put in 1-o-n-g hours of practice, starting in the spring after the girls are chosen for their ability, pep, voice, poise, and character. The fall brings more practice, exciting football games, delicious brunches, and spirited rallies — one before the season opens, and one the night before Hoague’s Heroes’ meet their arch-rival Wakefield on Thanksgiving. Then comes the hectic winter season, bringing even more activity; each week the girls cheer at two basketball games, two hockey games, and still more PRACTICE — ( Can we really have Sunday off?”) Despite the sore throats and aching muscles, the time and energy spent, the nerve-wracking preparations for rallies, and other trials and tribulations’ ( ' But five kids can’t be sick at once!”), any cheerleader will tell you that cheering has been one of the most fun and rewarding activities of her life. After endless hours of practice and the retouching of routines, the squad proved to be great entertainment and a success on and off the field. Ral- lies, pre-game brunches, spring concerts, the planter, the big Thanksgiving Rally, F block studies, tryouts, and the Indian headdresses are all part of the fun of being a majorette. The majorettes demonstrate skill and agility in every twirl they make and every show they perform. At the rallies the majorettes’ en- thuisiasm helped arouse school spirit and contributed to several of our team’s wins. Their colorful headdresses and costumes enhance the enjoyment of the spec- tators. Definitely we all know that the hard working majorettes are an impor- tant and indispensable facet of life at M.H.S. and they have helped make our four years at high school memorable and success ful! 123 british travel club First Row: P Tames, P. April 10, 1970 seemed as though it would never come for sixty members of our class. On this date the British Travel Club, along with their advisors, Mr. Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. Whitworth, embarked for their tour of the British Isles. This club, a relatively new one at M.H.S., is always popular and evidently establishing a wonderful tradition with their European trip. Friday activity periods prepared those who had not studied English history. The week spent in the capitol city was definitely a highlight of the two week tour. The travelers visited the famous landmarks of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and Westminster Abbey Time was also alloted for day trips and free afternoons to explore the city at one’s own pace. Students agree that many contrasts made their voyage very interesting. Not only did they spend time in the modern cities such as Edinburgh and London; but also at the prehistoric excavations at Stonehenge and Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-on- Avon, where the travelers visited Anne Hathaway’s cottage. The trip would not have been complete without a visit to Melrose Abbey. A brief stop was made in Paris and Versailles as the weary, but grateful group headed home. They all acclaim it as one of the most memorable events of their high school years. 124 thistle The Thistle, the school ' s literary magazine, finished its fourth year with its fourth publication. The staff, with editor-in-chief Adrienne Sawler and advisors Mrs. Prescott and Mrs. Steele, worked throughout the year to select original short stories, essays, poems and art work by students from all grades. Contributions reflect hidden student talent; all are spontaneous, and voluntary without the usual pressures of classroom assignments. The club started its year early by sponsoring the annual Book Fair as a fund raising project. The result of their diligence — a masterpiece of student creativity. .... The only loss Joseph Hoague’s heroes suffered was at the evil hands of Winchester. The Raiders launched their terrific season by trouncing Stoneham and followed by rolling over Lexington, next Belmont, and Concord too! Then their tremendous streak was marred by their loss to league champs Winchester. After this heartbreaker,” the Raiders bounced back ot crush” Lynn Clas- sical, Newton South, and also Reading. The cycle was set and the scene ready for the tilt with arch-rival Wakefield. Easily walloping the Warriors, the Red Raiders captured the second place title in the Middlesex League. This was perhaps the most spirited and determined team in Melrose history and lead- ing this fine club was All-Scholastic Captain John L. Sullivan. Special recognition should also be given to Tony DePaolo, Richard Harris, and Miff Skane, and to every end, center, tackle, guard, quarterback, halfback and fullback who succeeded in giving M.H.S. a super ’69 season. 20 28 28 30 20 60 32 44 20 Stone. Coached by Mr. Driscoll, the team lost its first three games, but went on to win five of its last eight games. They beat Bryant Stratton College 3-2 after being behind 2-0 at half time, and beat Winchester, last year’s champ, 2-0, amassing a league record of 4-6 and an overall record of 5-6. Three members of the team, John Baier, Nick Caiazza, and John Tai, were elected to the all-star league team, while Dennis Gerrior was elected honorary captain of M.H.S. soccer. The team members spent several hours of practice, and we feel that the new soccer team is already an important facet of M.H.S. life and will win several trophies! 1 0 2 0 2 2 1 4 3 0 Wak. Lex. Con. Our track team faithfully showed up for every track meet and as the season progressed, the team steadily improved. The season began with an impressive 61-25 victory over Reading and a 49-37 win over Belmont. They lost a tight meet to Woburn with a 44-42 score and also to Wakefield and Lexington.
