Text from Pages 1 - 188 of the 1969 volume:

THE CLASS OF 1969 presents MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS MJiLKUSb PUBLIC LIBItAlf MELROSE, MASS. Our world at Melrose High School encompasses over two thousand students and numerous faculty members. Our school grounds consist of a main building, new additions of classrooms, conference rooms, scientific and linguistic labora- tories, and many athletic facilities. All these people and these buildings have formed a small world in which we have lived closely for four years. These years involve the ever-present patterns of design, teaching, and competition. As our theme of Patterns develops in pictures and words, one can see that not only are we working around and within the more obvious patterns of geo- metric design in computer attendance cards, program schedules, and symmetrical arrangements of seats in our auditorium and on our football field, but we are also being molded by a different kind of pattern: our courses and our subjects. These courses will eventually set a design for the kind of life we wish to pursue after we have left Melrose High School. In our many fields of endeavor, patterns tend to develop our latent talents. On the gridiron, on the courts, on the baseball diamond, or in any competition we are being trained in greater design towards self-control, vigor and co- ordination. In the many other fields of education, our minds are being shaped and disciplined so that we may step into the world with confidence and maturity, and we may begin to live with pride and dignity in our community. As this year book unfolds, one must realize that we are not the cold statistics of a number of students and buildings, who have been at Melrose High School for four years, but we are concerned students with faults, virtues, ideals, and aspirations in this exciting year of 1969 . TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty 5 Seniors 15 Organizations 89 Activities 117 Sports 125 Advertisements 145 3 Mr. A. Imrie Dixon Principal The ever-flowing patterns which have shaped and guided your lives do not end with graduation from high school. Your home, your family, your friends, your community, all the day-by-day contacts you have made have contributed to making you what you are and what you shall be. If there is any consistent law of the universe, it is the law of change, and the changing patterns which engulf you are part of that universal law. But you are not robots, you are not puppets on a string. You are human beings capable of making decisions and choices. You have the power and capacity to use the skills, the tools of brain and mind, to help make this world just a little better because you are here. As Winston Churchill said at a Harvard Commencement years ago, This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end. This is the end of the beginning — this is your commencement.” 4 John F. MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL — MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS October 18, 1968 Ell Pond Knoll, possible M.H.S. site Is New High School On Way? This year’s M.H.S. newspaper is an all-new and extremely commendable effort begun by Editor-in-Chief Jeff Elliott. As of September 26, 1968, all that remained of the shambles of the old Imprint was its former Assistant Sports Editor, Jeff, and a dream. With the help of a vitally interested student body and an equally dedicated pair of faculty advisors, Miss Bailey and Miss Lechowicz, the dream of an all -New Imprint was made a reality. The newspaper focuses on the feature aspects of journalism and has added such innovations as an athletic personality, letters to the editor column, movie and book reviews, cartoons, a candid picture column, and SIX PAGES ! ! in a concerted effort to bring itself and M.H.S. closer to the individual student. Each year, its members dress in Roman togas on two occasions: in the fall, new mem- bers, clad in Roman attire present skits from their readings from Cicero and Caesar, while in the spring, members, again wearing togas, attend the state Junior Classical League Convention. As a service project, the members sell candy at the spring operetta, and give the pro- ceeds to the Permanent Scholarship Fund. GIRLS ' CLUB The Melrose High School Girls’ Club is the oldest organization in the school. Incor- porated in 1925, the club, since then, has contributed much to the school and to the community. This year for the first time the Girls’ Club sponsored Powder Puff League football games. Both were played against Winchester, one at home and ' one. away. Cheered on by the team’s mascot Chris Merenda, our girls won the home game 12 to 8, but lost at Winchester 28 to 14. The proceeds of the game were added to the Girls’ Club scholarship fund which gives financial assistance each year to a worthy senior girl. Also this year the Girls’ Club continued with its tradition of helping needy families of the community; Marilyn Contreas and her committee worked hard to provide 20 families with a Thanksgiving meal complete from soup to nuts. Other activities included a Spring Fashion show, a Ski trip to Crotchet Mountain, a second annual Mothers’ Tea, during which the girls were presented with Melrose High School Girls’ Club pins. The Modern Dance Club presented its annual Christmas Show which proved to be a special success this year. G.A.A. held its annual banquet again and all the girls had a wonde rful time. G.A.A. also sponsored all intramural sports along with girls tennis, and field hockey teams. The Leaders’ Club, one of the most purposeful clubs at Melrose, did a fine job assisting the Gym Teachers and learning how to officiate at all types of games. PAL CLUB Front Row. J. Desforges, D. Under the direction of Mr. Hodgkins and school psychologists Mrs. Dembsk i and Mr. Cook, the club is in its fourth successful year. LIBRARY CLUB Once again the Library Club met and resumed activities for this year. The officers elected are: Cynthia Wadland, President; Paula Hennis, Vice President, and Joanne Hennis, Secretary. There are no dues, therefore a treasurer is not required. Mrs. Rose, the Club Advisor, promotes the reading of books and other materials for these girls, who also help in selecting new books for the library. President Fred Alvarez and his officers planned other activities, such as a field trip to a Span- ish ballet and a dinner at a Spanish restaurant. Mem- bership has skyrocketed and the Spanish Club is fast becoming one of the most active organizations at MHS. SPANISH CLUB First Row: D. Stewart, M. McBride, P. Stone, A. Goshgar- ian, F. ENGLISH HISTORY CLUB TOUR OF THE BRITISH ISLES After six Tuesday afternoon seminars to set the mood for our fourteen day tour of the British Isles, thirty-one happy girls and nine lucky boys left Logan Airport on April sixteenth for a night flight to Shannon, Ireland. Our coach was waiting to start our tour through the Killarney Lakes District with a stop-over at Cork on the way to Dublin, where we toured the city in the after- noon and attended a delightful performance at the Abbey Theater in the evening. The stragglers, girls, of course, were hurried onto our coach the next morning to catch a plane for a two day stop in Edinburgh, where we spent one day touring the Scottish Highlands around Loch Lomond and the other sightseeing in this historical capital city. Leaving by train and travelling along the coast, we arrived in the medieval walled city of York in time for viewing the Roman ruins and the York Minster. The next morning we began a three day coach tour through Robin Hood country, Nottingham, and Coventry to Stratford-on-Avon, stopping overnight at the White Swan Hotel and attending a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Continuing to the city of Bath with a tour of Blenheim Palace en route, we viewed the famous Roman baths and visited the Cathe- dral. After visiting Stonehenge, we spent the next night in Salisbury, home of the tall spired Cathedral before heading for London with stops en route at Royal Windsor Castle, Runnymede, and Hampton Court Palace Gardens. Four days in London were spent with guided tours of London’s famous streets, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, the famous Tower of London, and the beautiful Cathedrals. Free time for shopping, an evening at the theater, a soccer game between two first division teams, as well as a full day’s tour through the County of Kent, which is Dickens country and the location of Canterbury and Maidstone, filled our time until we were homeward bound from London Airport to Boston. DRAMA CLUB Under the direction of Mr. Glynn and officers Jose- phine Gandolfi, president, Stephen Case, vice-president, Patricia Ball, treasurer, and Ann Pustell, secretary, the Drama Club began its year with the traditional Pot Luck Supper. Its first production, an evening of four student-directed one-acts, was a great success, and enter- tained the audience with everything from classic comedy and tragedy to an original avant-garde play. The winter production was something new for the Drama Club, a double production: The Fantastiks, a musical, and The Miracle Worker. This year the Drama Club extended extra effort to bring MHS more and better theatre than ever before. FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES First Row. J. DeCoste, B. Bennett, S. Case, J. Gandolfi, A. Pustell, P. The Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Warren D. Wood, had seventy-four members who gave the group a pleasing and harmonizing tone. The group presented Christmas Vespers with selections from the Messiah” by Handel, Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and many more songs which provided spirited entertainment for the public. It can be agreed that the Glee Club again had a wonderful year ! The Ensemble, a group of voices selected from the Glee Club, per- formed not only at the same programs as the Glee Club, but also for the Rotary Club, the Couples’ Club, the opening of the Winter Festival at the Prudential Building, and for other community organizations. Re- hearsing during activity periods, this concert group well deserved the praise which it received. M.H.S. BELL RINGERS 1 W‘: ff ! k r 7 -JKZ First Row, L-R: H. George, C. Lenk, L. Foster, S. Band To the tunes of Up, Up, and Away,” and Love is Blue,” the M.H.S. Band presented some unique and entertaining shows during the football season. New patterns such as the basket balloon and the broken heart accompanied some of the these popular tunes. The season opened under the direction of Mr. Wood during Mr. Love’s temporary absence. Our conscientious student leader Janet Pane, and our assistant student leader, Fred Roche, led the Band through all formations. Praise is due also to our Indian, Martin Stanton, and the M.H.S. Color Guard whose faithful participation added to the fine field presentations. Added Friday evening and Saturday morning rehearsals, frequent re- minders to march 8 to the 5” and uniform inspections brought about greater precision and pride of performance. 114 Front Row. S. Some favorite selections which members enjoyed playing were: Theme from Romeo and Juliet,” and highlights from The King and I.” Another favorite was Light Cavalry” (the Lone Ranger Theme) especially when taken at the right tempo. This organization of dedicated players has produced fine performances at Christmas Vespers, the Spring Concert, the June Recital and other musical productions. Also, some members have had the distinction of participating in the District and All-State Concerts. 115 AUDIO VISUAL CLUB Front Row: R. MacLean, B. MacMartin, L. Shaw, H. Hartman, A. Norton, A. FOOTBALL With a season record of 8 wins and 1 loss, not much more has to be said about Mel- rose High’s outstanding 1968 football squad. Coach Hoague combined a great young line with an explosive veteran backfield, and came up with a team that averaged over 34 points per game while keeping their opponents to a meager 12 points a game. The Raiders easily rolled over most of their opponents, their tremendous season marred only by an upset 8-12 loss to league champs Winchester. In the season finale with rival Wakefield, the Big Red was just too much, crushing the Warriors 50-13, crowning a great high school career for many seniors. High scoring back Rick Comeau received All-Scholastic recognition, while star quar- terback Steve Skane was named to the second All-Scholastic team on which Capt. Steve Murphy and Tony DePaolo received honorable mention. The Raiders also dominated the Middlesex League Senior All-Star Team with Capt. Steve Murphy, Rick Comeau, and Steve Skane joined by fellow teammates: end Brian Butler, defensive back Dave Searles, defensive end Vin Migliore, and defensive half- back Doug Searles. With the return of a big and experienced line, and a sound backfield, Melrose will have an excellent chance to capture the league title in 1969. ii 126 roraw m d r 4 ,■ 9 t % K. «1p mHM 4 — r ’ !W w8r. FIELD HOCKEY The Field Hockey Team, co-captained by Elaine Snow and Jeanne Hughes had a fine season with a 3-3-2 final record. Mrs. Kearn coached the team with Miss Wragg serving as referee. The girls went through extensive practices every day, going over skills and getting into shape. Mrs. Kearn felt the team did very well despite the loss of key seniors last year. The players proved their ability when Miss Wragg and the co- captains took over during Mrs. Kearn’s absence. The girls agreed that the most exciting game was against Saugus in which Linda Bigwood scored the only goal in the game on a penalty bully. The season finished with a party where all the players were presented with humorous poems recounting their experiences on the team this year. JUNIOR VARSITY Front Row. S. Warner, K. Harris, D. CROSS COUNTRY The Melrose High Harriers came up with several outstanding runners this year in quest of the Middlesex title. After dropping their first two meets to Concord and Wake- field, Melrose then came on to take three of their last five meets, and finished with a 4-3 season. In the Middlesex League meet held at Mt. Hood, the Melrose Varsity placed 7th while the J.V. took a 4th. Co-captains Bill Dellea and John Scarpa led a strong corps of underclassmen who promise to give Melrose a strong team next year. BASKETBALL Once again the Melrose High Varsity Basketball team has had a successful season. Under the guidance of Coach John Killilea, the Raiders are in second place behind a strong Lexington team. The only other loss Melrose has suffered was an upset to Con- cord, making the team’s record 13-3 so far. The team has won the necessary number of games to qualify for the Tech Tourney, and the rest of the season promises to be as exciting. Since the team has only one senior, Brian Butler, next year’s team will be very strong. Starting players for the hoopsters are: John MacDonnell, Don Doucette, Rick Thibeault, Joe McBride, and John Paleo. Also seeing starting action are: Brian Butler, Bob Killilea, and Ed Koehler. 130 r.¥«M altm m 4 GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL Front Row: L. Curry, N. Jacobson, Captain C. Hemenway, D. Lacey, E. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL The 1969 Girls’ Basketball team, coached by Miss Josephine Chase and captained by Cindy Hemenway, ended the season with a record of three wins and four losses. Although the Raiderettes lost more than they won, they showed ability to pull together and play a good team game. The varsity will especially remember their big wins against rival Wakefield (51-29) and also against Concord (44-29). The J.V.’s, captained by Diane Beauchamp, ended with a record of three wins and three losses. They will especially remember their exciting last minute victory over Win- chester (23-22). GIRLS’ J.V. Edmonds, J. Hall. SOCCER This fall, Melrose High inaugurated, much to the pleas- ure of the student body, a soccer team. Coached by Thomas Humphreys, the team had a favorable year. Although the schedule was compiled from teams both in and out of the league, Melrose finished the season with an impressive 4-6-1 record outscoring their opponents 17-13. Since it was the first year for the team, the number of seniors was small. However, leading the team were seniors Robert Lepore, Glenn Reitsma, Andre Perroton, and David Hall as manager. With strong showings against strongly established teams such as Medford, Concord, Winchester, and Woburn, Melrose has a bright future in the Middlesex Soccer League next year. The regulars on the field and goal tender, sophomore John Tai who registered four shutouts, including a double overtime scoreless tie against Lynn English, all did an out- standing job for Melrose. Good luck in the following sea- sons! WRESTLING This year the Wrestling Team with only four seniors on the varsity squad posted an excellent 8-4 record. In league action Melrose sported a 5-0 record and captured their third consecutive Middlesex League title. This young team also went on to place third in the sectional tournament held at Newton South. Melrose, captained by Phil Russo and Rick Bernard, had several men with exceptional season and tournament records. Co-Capt. Bernard and sophomore John Mulvihill both finished the dual season undefeated and both placed second at the sectionals. Junior Mif Skane ended his regular season with an amazing 11 falls out of 12 bouts. He went on to pin all his opponents in the sectionals and took first place honors. Other wrestlers doing well dur- ing season and post season tournies were: Dick Foster, Craig Kneeland, Doug Adams, John Scarpa, Kevin Bab- cock, John Mulvihill, Jim Mello, and Paul Cerretani. In the State Tourney, won by Chelmsford, Melrose came in sixth. Co-Capt. Bernard became the first Melrose wrestler ever to become a state champ as he clinched the 152 lb. state title. Junior Mif Skane took the third spot in his weight class and first year man, Paul Cerretani took a fourth. Next year with a young, but experienced squad returning, Coach Ball can look forward to another successful season and probably his fourth League Crown. WRESTLING Fr ont Row: P. Cerretani, R. HOCKEY For the fifth straight year, the hard-hitting, fast-skating, Melrose High School hockey team clinched the Middlesex League Title. Piloted by a dynamic, scoring line of Joe White, Steve Dolloff, and Jim Murphy, the Raiders suffered only one loss, to Concord, 3-1. A dependable second line of John Baier, Ed Hughes, and Steve Jones ably assisted in the scoring. Paul Blake, Jeff Baker, and Paul Chasse made up the third line. On a strong defensive line were Larry Abbott (alias Bobby Orr), Frank Marcoux, and seniors Dave Brussard, Dave Searles, and Tom Burke. Steve Wolfe and Joe McCarthy did a fine job in the nets for the Raiders. Once again, the perennial Middlesex champs qualified for the States and reached the finals. 134 Front Row. R. LePore, G. In the Class B State Meet Melrose qualified 12 runners; and for the second straight year they came home with the title. Melrose had two returning titlists from last year’s meet: George Leach in the high jump and Rick Comeau in the 300; and each one again won their specialty this year. Also in the state meet, the relay team of Steve Skane, Bill Boyce, Tony DePaolo, and Rick Comeau broke a thirteen year record winning in 2:25.1. Others who placed were Steve Skane in the high jump and Barry Rollins in the hurdle, Tony DePaolo in the dash, John McKinlay in the 300, Bill Boyce in the 600, Bill Dellea in the 1000, and Bruce Rollins in the mile. Earlier in the year, Melrose won the B.A.A., amassing a record tying 22 points. This year has been a very rewarding one and one with many memories. B.A.A. CHAMPS W. Dellea, W. Boyce, Coach R.
