0 027 c The school life at Melrose High School is as diversified as the many personalities of the students who participate. Our high school years are made up of growing pains, tears, happiness, and triumph; all these symbols are centered around our school. To Freshman, Melrose offered the first step to maturity; during orientation we were introduced to the many sides of our school experience, academic, cultural, athletic, and social. The primary emphasis is on the academic phase of our careers. We dis- covered that a great deal of assiduous study must be put into our school work. The astute pupils learned the art of concentration and perseverance, and these attributes are essential to future success. Our teachers form a vital part of our learning experience by initiating us to our studies, giving us insp iration, and kindling the intellectual fires that make us question, search, and learn. How well we remember the foreboding titles, Scholastic Aptitude Tests, College Board Achievements, Vocational Placement Tests, and I.Q. Tests that were presented to us as we planned for the future. Through our Junior and Senior years the tests were taken, the guidance was given, the schools and colleges were chosen, and careers were decided upon. Now an even greater challenge follows! Melrose High School promotes an active cultural life for its students, and there are many opportunities offered in the field of music, exemplified by our various singing groups, a concert band, and our school orchestra. Our talented artists display their works in an annual art show which has gained acclaim as one of the finest high school exhibits in the state. In addition, students may take part in drama or exercise their oratory abilities by debating. These clubs, composed of different talents and abilities, make up the cultural side of our school life. Development of physical fitness is as important as our cultural awakening, and realizing this, Melrose offers many sports to both boys and girls. Athletics build self-discipline, a sound body, and character. Self-discipline is applied during training, a sound body is formed by practice, and character is strengthened by the code of good sportsmanship. Therefore, we can appreciate the impor- tance of the athletic program of our school. Melrose High encourages an active social life with an abundance of games, plays, concerts, or dances in every season, and these activities are enthusiastically supported by the students. Indeed, many of our happiest memories come from looking back on school events and our participation in the Winter Ball, Operetta, games, and play nights. Our 1966 LOG is a record of the many sides of Melrose High School. The academic side prepares us for the future, the cultural life makes us aware and appreciative of the arts, the athletic events mold our character as well as our bodies, and the social activities offer relaxation and enjoyment. Consequently, our high school strives to make us whole individuals by developing the many sides of our personalities. Having been shown the paths, we are ready to go on to make our contribution to the future. 2
